Source required for both claims!
Well wasn't both services pitched to the DfT? Given they have to sign off any funding required? I'm sure that's how it was mentioned to us.

And it is definitely happening. We have staff going over the route on 350s overnight. Why would they pull it now?

The DfT cannot approve paths, only the Office of Rail and Road can do that. That is likely to change when the Railways Bill becomes law and Great British Railways is created but that is not expected until next year 2027. Until then an application for paths is needed and I still do not see one either on the ORR website or the Network Rail website.
But what about the funding? We've increased head count or drivers, guards and managers to cover the additional work. Work that is being split over 2 depots.

I suggest putting those questions to the Department for Transport and West Midlands Railway management. West Midlands Railway will transfer to public ownership tomorrow Sunday 1 February 2026.

The information came from 'West Midlands Railway Management' as you call it. Given it all came from internal briefings.

Funding has been agreed/provided for head count increase.
Trains already doing h&s runs overnight.
Training packs being put together.
Links being split to accommodate new work.

None of this happens on a whim by a TOC under management contract. No additional spending has been allowed without DfT involvement for a few years now.

I don't get why some think the move to DTFO changes these plans.

I'm well aware the company I work for is being TUPE'd tomorrow.

I remember when Central Trains extended their Derby-Crewe service to Manchester Airport, non-stop from Crewe (+ maybe Wilmslow).
The single class 153 was mostly empty, bar the few stragglers like me (from Chester) trying to avoid ATW via Manchester Pic (they did not run to the Airport then).
I know the market has changed in 20 years but I will be surprised if a WMT via Stoke service is "busy".
The existing Northern Crewe-Airport service is quiet too.
Airport services also need early/late options, and that has never been offered on the Crewe route.
Northern (well, NWT) ran a Chester-Crewe-Airport service using Pacers for a brief spell but that was empty too east of Crewe.

Presumably like this class 350 working last week, operated by RailAdventure?

Funding for anything above the current baseline is agreed on a year to year basis. This is not in the baseline. Funding is yet to be agreed for anything else, and won‘t be for a while yet. It’s the same for all TOCs funded by the DfT. I would be astonished if the additional traincrew being recruited were specifically for this. Much more likely to cover existing issues (WMT traincrew cancellations were amongst the worst of all operators), and to cover the Camp Hill new services.

If it is not going to happen London Northwestern Railway should remove the Destination Manchester page from the What's New page on their website. The Department for Transport should be advising London Northwestern Railway to remove the Destination Manchester page from the What's New page on their website. It does not help the credibility of the Railway Industry if new passenger train services are being promised when there is no intention to run them.

Additional train crew etc are at Crewe depot. Very low cancellation on the Trent/Potteries due to staff availability. Don't sign Camp Hill line.

Fair enough if funding isn't actually allocated for December yet, but boots on the ground suggest it is forthcoming. Guards are commited Sundays anyway so it's not to do with that.

Apologies for the double post. Here is a photo of 350111 at Manchester Airport on 26th January, the first run from Crewe in preparation of the service commencing later this year.

I thought this route extension has yet been approved by the DFT

I’m aware, it’s when you said “later this year” it hasn’t been approved by the DFT to run this extended service
So people on here keep saying.

But when the MD and exec team have confirmed several times (internally) over the past 12 months that they have been given the go ahead, staff numbers increased, timings and diagrams printed in the office, and now having stock traverse the route, I'm going to believe what I see.

Why would we already have dates in May penned in for training paths if it's not been approved by the DfT? I get that funding for December won't yet have been finalised, but it's clear as day internally that this isn't just some paper exercise.

LNR have a really good opportunity here (providing paths exist between New Street and International which I doubt they do) to extend to Birmingham International and spin it as an Airport-Airport service

Might be good marketing but would it be useful to passengers? To make it useful they'd need to arrange through ticketing with the airlines, which isn't unprecedented but I imagine would be seen as too much complexity for the relatively small number of passengers who need to interchange between Birmingham and Manchester airports.

Even if they had through ticketing why would someone do that, rather than just change at Manchester or go via Heathrow.

If I were a passenger from say, Stafford or Stoke on Trent, then the option of a direct train to the airport could be quite attractive. Even though it might be a "slow" train, the knowledge that I wouldn't need to change trains whilst travelling with luggage could be quite persuasive, irrespective of any ticketing arrangements.

Also whilst small in number, there may be some passengers who travel out from one airport and back to the other, so for these a direct link could also be attractive

Both Stafford and Stoke already have direct services to/from Birmingham International (the CrossCountry service). Direct Manchester Airport services would be welcome though.

For the avoidance of doubt, @SCDR_WMR is correct. It may be the Principal change or the Subsidiary.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the evening and Sunday service given Northern doesn't run to Crewe at those times. It will also be interesting to see who gets a stop chop down to 1tph to and from Crewe. Expect complaints...

There's barely an origin-destination pair where you'd change at just one of Manchester or Birmingham airports. Let alone both!

You would be splitting the Rugeley International to make that possible I expect, you will really struggle to get another train to International.

We're under the impression Northern would potentially relinquish their Airport-Crewe service. Probably just gossip, but heard it a few times.

LNR will definitely run a 7 day service, I think its roughly down as 5am-2am on the links. Is that similar to Northern now I wonder?

It's likely to release the train crew to cover other Northern services, not other WMR-LNR ones.

A straight swap with some stops cut out is the only option. There's no time for anything else.

Northern doesn't run to / from Crewe on this route on Sundays or in the evening.

Current evening Airport services don't go beyond Wilmslow.
Sundays is currently a 2-hourly bus Airport-Wilmslow, 10-22.

Is there a reason why they don't run in the evening or Sundays? Can't see LNR not running then unless there is a physical reason.

I don't believe the service has ever been run through to Crewe evenings or Sundays. They turned back at Alderley Edge or Wilmslow in the evenings. On Sundays they used to run every two hours to Alderley Edge, which was upgraded to hourly Wilmslow - Liverpool Lime Street several years ago, and then downgraded to no trains at all in 2024 and only replacement bus.

I can assure you, that when I wrote that post two weeks ago, DfT had not approved it.
I shan't do you the same discourtesy that you did to them in asking for your source on that.

I do not work in the railway industry so I have no inside information on this or anything else. I sent an email enquiry to stakeholders@wmtrains.co.uk to ask about the current status of this proposed new passenger train service which is the subject of the currently showing "Destination Manchester" page on the London Northwestern Railway website. I received the following quoted reply.

We are actively working towards introducing London Northwestern Railway services to Manchester Airport and the position set out on our website remains our aspiration. As I’m sure you can appreciate, there is a great deal of governance activity required across the rail industry to develop and assess proposals for introducing new services and making significant changes to any part of the timetable. We are working with Network Rail, fellow operators and local partners to go through this process at present, ahead of applying for any required paths, to make sure that whatever is presented for path bidding is robust and does not create undue challenges for the wider network. We will of course share updates on our website when there is a material development in this process.
