The "modern" video games industry with many products glorifying aggressive, threatening behaviour, have much to answer for.

I know, I've been playing Rome: Total War, and I tell you what, I've never felt the urge to use a ballista more. I'm off to cut the heads off my neighbours, I think they're barbarians.

Of course there was no such thing as violence before video games of course.

Of course there was, but each generation seems to have a higher intolerance level than the previous one.

The matter of the video games industry is that the makers of these products, which all seem to command high retail prices, sit back letting the monies pour into their businesses, without the slightest regard to what can happen when people re-enact happenings in their products in real life.

I know that you were not defending the makers of these products.

Whilst I don't wish to generalise (I, for example, may end up on benefits for a short while if I am unable to find a job - although I sincerely hope that this won't happen), a significant proportion of people on benefits seem to be lazy people who don't want a job.

If they can't write a CV and a job application without spelling mistakes, do they really expect an employer to hire them? If they use bad language or dress poorly, do they really expect an employer to hire them? If they tell a prospective employer at a job interview that they're only there because "the job centre told them to go," do they really expect to be hired? !!!

That comes across as the view of someone who has no experienc eof the real world at all. I believe you are quite young, if so I hope I am not too harsh in saying that you appear to have made an extraordinary numbe rof assumptions here.

The "modern" video games industry with many products glorifying aggressive, threatening behaviour, have much to answer for.

I believe that the music industry, computer games industry, and the film industry are all as culpable as advertising agencies and the media in creating the attitudes of society.

Is that fact or opinion? If it's opinion then we can discount you as a not very nice person. If it's fact, I'm sure we would all like to see your source...

It's quite clearly an opinion based on what ALR has read or been told, and not on anything they have actually experienced.

That game has never instilled any violent reactions in me either! But I don;t think that's the sort of game Paul's thinking about!

I think some people are just more influenced than others, and everyone is influenced to some degree by advertising and media. This is why you get brand loyalty and people that think all trains run late!

You can say this because you are a person with the intelligence to differentiate between right and wrong, having read many of your postings on this forum in the past.:D

Unfortunately, not everyone is not as level-headed as you are, more's the pity.

I'm sorry, that's rubbish. Many of my friends at school played GTA and have so far not killed someone. It isn't R*'s fault that people who play their games might be thick enough to do it in real life!

Given that R*'s games come with an 18 limit on them, surely it's the fault of the parents, not the games maker.

I've been playing GTA:san Andreas all morning, and I've not felt any urge to go out, steal cars and shoot people.

Completely agree with the above, I've played GTA-style games for years and have never been tempted to start carjacking and shooting people. There is a big difference between pixels on a screen and real life. Sure, maybe a few people are unable to make this distinction, but you can't just blame the entire video games industry - it's as much the fault of the parent(s) for not monitoring their child's reaction to such games, or even for letting the child play in the first place.

People are influenced and manipulated by the media, it's just whether or not you question what you are told.

It's also easy to see why people latch onto benefits when you read things like this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/new...s-because-they-are-better-off-unemployed.html

However, a single person on benefits isn't going to live that kind of life, are they?

I play lots of computer games which involve gratuitous violence - yet I haven’t felt the need to kick my neighbours door in and chop of their heads or shoot them and steal their car! You can’t blame computer games for this criminal stupidity

Thank you for your input...you read my mind well, as to the products that I was referring to.

Being an "old-timer", can someone tell me what "Grand Theft Auto" is supposed to convey in its game playing. I have seen much advertising for this product and its follow-up product in print and on television.

I agree with your comments, its not the fault of the film and games industry's that some people cant tell the difference between a game and real life.

My father is on benefits because he he is disabled through no fault of his own. He did have a very well paid job til the NHS made a screw up, yet he tried to go back to work but couldnt do a lot of jobs after he lost his eyesight.

I have a lot of thanks for him as he made sure me and my brother knew we had to respect society and adults etc, when i had to go on benefits after lossing my job a few months ago, i was applying for and looking for jobs all over the uk.

I think its sad that these yobs, have given all us young people a bad image.

That said the way some of these young were behaving when they were on tv would anyone want to employ them.

Drugs, prostitution, crime, gang warfare etc. Why don't you try it? ;)

Indeed there is. Some people differentiate between the two rather better than others though!

Exactly, but the solution isn't to ban the games.

If people immerse themselves in gang culture, play games that contain high levels of violence, believe the advertising that says you must have this or that or be perceived as a failure, and do not fear the consequences of breaking the law, then the games are part of the problem along with the other factors.

It's difficult for most of us here to actually put ourselves in the position of the rioters, as we have a much better sense of moral values than these people.

A sandbox adventure game series revolving around life in American gangs. One of the greatest media series ever made. RDR is quite good too.

No matter when anything likes this happen some one always will go to instantly ban games or saying they are evil. Thats not the problem it's the parents responabilty.

As other young adults have said on here it gives all the rest of us a bad name what isn't great at all.

Why should I be at all interested in such matters, when there are more pressing matters to concern myself with such as the conditions in which the refugees from the Horn of Africa are having to live at this present time or the conditions that the survivors of the Japanese tsunami are still having to live in.

There are enough real-life matters going on in this world, without the need to immerse myself in trivia. Perhaps when you have had enough experiance of life in the real world, brought up a family with good values being taught to your children both at home and at school and have attained my age of approaching 70 years having retired from business life, but still finding time to help charities without the need to charge for my time but for the help that my experiance of life can bring to others, you may well see matters in a somewhat different light.
