Considering the purpose of HS2 is capacity relief to enable better local train services, having intermediate stations between the major focal points is kind of redundant. On the other hand Parkway stations can be beneficial as well such as Old Oak Common. Considering high-speed rail is predominantly meant to serve cities it's focus should predominantly be there.
Then HS2 has to closely follow the West coast mainline which it doesn’t.

There is no road and that really rather defeats the point. There is absolutely no sense in an interchange with East West if that was your thinking.

HS2 serves the main WCML very well. There is nowhere south of Birmingham that is a regular driver of WCML traffic (with the possible exception of Milton Keynes)

Basically, we think differently on the way an effective parkway would work. For your proposal to work the station would need to be served by trains going north, but I would only ever see Birmingham and perhaps Chester stopping there. The demand driver for me would be London.

London demand is more of a sure thing for sure.

Theres a lot more chicken and egg with the other destinations, but 200k from Milton Keynes to Manchester isnt awful. Depends how much split ticketing there is.

But you also need to extrapolate how much of that traffic is driving to Milton Keynes and would actually prefer a station on the A43.

I know many who drive from Cambridgeshire (not Cambridge itself) to Milton Keynes because there are Avanti services (they might be the only people doing so, of course)

I just cannot see anyone building a station somewhere that only had B roads to access and limited potential for a new town (because of said B roads).

A HS2 station somewhere near the A43 with a medium-density housing development would have been a very logical outcome. But, they went for two areas (Manchester Victoria North and Leeds South) which are actually in cities and being built anyway so that they could claim the New Towns policy was working.
Manchester Victoria North and Leeds South are both areas in which the northwards extension of HS2 has been cancelled.

I think the problem with not putting intermediate stations on HS2 is it essentially bets everything on the entire sprawling high speed system, as originally envisaged, being completed succesfully.

If that fails, as it has, the core section probably ends up half (or more) empty and the railway ends up running duplicate lines without the traffic to fill them.

I've never been particularly fond of the "intermediate stations eat capacity" argument, given that maintaining a notional 360kph capability probably results in a significant reduction of capacity over just accepting 320 or 300kph. And we don't even get to take advantage of that extra speed in the HS2 plan, except as delay recovery.

In the end, all the trains could run via the M1 corridor and stop several times between London and Birmingham (and further north!) and still handily beat the classic railway.

And Manchester airport is off the M6.
As both stations are merely near the airport, not at them, they will have their own car parks. These will be priced for HS2 use, solving your problem.
I would assume any additional stations could be paid for with private money. Perhaps you would need a cut of the tickets as well as parking. Not sure.
What if that assumption doesn’t pan out? Would reassigning hs2 income from paying off hs2 debt to funding underused stations affect the affordability of the whole thing?

This confuses me. Are you only thinking of parkway stations for the towns that have wcml stations, ignoring the French method of putting parkway stations where it suits the fast line?

Can you roughly sketch out what number of hs2 stations you’d have north of Birmingham, north of Crewe, east of Crewe towards Manchester? I’m interested to see if a fast and slow mix creates a struggle or limitation.
Why even bother to go to the trouble of naming such HS2 stations, as there is going to be no HS2 services north of Birmingham in the same way there will be no bridge or tunnel across the Irish Sea.

The key factor relevant to this discussion is HS2's maximum speed. This is designed for 400kph/250mph and expected to operate at 360kph/225mph.

It has important implications for route and stations, yet has only been mentioned by a few people.

The higher maximum speed means that the route has to be very straight, and can't do curves needed to get to intermediate locations suitable for stations. A good comparison here is with the eastern leg of East West Rail: here lots of people moan about the line not being straight enough because its route takes in Tempsford, Cambourne and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. That can be done with a 160kph/100mph railway, but not with a 400kph/250mph railway.

The higher maximum speed also means that intermediate stops have a much bigger time penalty. It takes more time to slow down from 360kph to stop, and back up to 360kph, than it does to do the same from and back to 300kph. Furthermore, it eats into capacity, because each stopping train effectively needs 2 paths, and may lose more time waiting for the next gap in the procession of non-stopping services.

Given the decision to build HS2 for 400kph/250mph, the answer to the question in the title is no. But if HS2 had been 300kph/185mph, like other high speed lines, then the answer might be different.

It'd definitely improve access for Bicester and possibly for Oxford but given there are already direct trains to Manchester, significant shift to HS2 would almost definitely require HS2 to be built in full.

Cambridge will likely be quicker travelling into London and using Euston or OOC to travel to the North West, particularly when frequency is considered, given any intermediate station isn't going to be well served. Bedford would similarly be competitive via London but also potentially changing at Bletchley or MK depending on service patterns.

I think people constantly understand estimate how bad nimbyism is the UK. I've seen people who live in tall buildings in Manchester complaining about other tall buildings being built.

Most of HS2s opposition is by elderly people who don't see much benefit to themselves from long term rail infrastructure. They likely don't use rail much, don't travel that much, and are unlikely to see many years of HS2s operation, so bribing them with a station won't work. By your logic there'd be no opposition in places like Water Orton or Mid-Cheshire (very close to HS2 stations) , but yet both areas have significant opposition to HS2.

Hardly anyone lives where HS1 passes through the South Essex area at height, and they already have a train service to London A lot of the land is used for industrial purposes. Given international trains wouldn't stop there, what demand would there be to the Kent stations served by HS1 trains.

More to the point, if the seat on the train to London can be filled from Ashford and East Kent rather than for someone from Purfleet, then that is going to provide a better return on the investment.
Point is London needs at least 1 Park and Ride station and Essex and Kent need a lot more than 1 bus an hour between them. The way both sides of the Thames out there are built up and increasingly built up and yet driving is the only real option between them. Seems like a policy failure to me!

Neither HS1 nor HS2 should be seen as the answer to short distance transit flows.

Only the most extreme BANANAs are like that. And ~0 of them aren’t far right.
On that point, this is a post someone made in comments to a YouTube video showing HS2 construction in progress.

That sort of sentiment, whether misdirected or not, isn't resolved by encouraging more development around intermediate stations.

But that, and the original question, ignores the entire original point of HS2. Capacity.

If you start branching off or adding stations between London and Interchange, it reduces the capacity of the line. The point was that HS2 phase1 would handle WCML, MML and ECML long distance, freeing up those high speed, high quality lines precisely to serve the conurbations being discussed. In fact, the speeds chosen help with providing a better alternative route to free up other non-London services such as cross country. If we start slowing them down, it reduces the desirability of choosing that over direct slower services. If we wanted to maintain the high frequency trains per hour then all services would have to take the same route, slowing the service down even further and reduce the benefits we get from reduced journey times between north and south.

I know that's not the entire plan now, but the design was a good one and we do still use that capacity to maximise value. The proposition is only about speed.

Aylesbury, the Chiltern mainline, Didcot-Birmingham, WCML all stand to benefit from HS2 (Chiltern lines do require extra investment to finish the passive provision HS2 built, but that's a separate matter). The real benefit to the intermediate stations is high capacity, high frequency, high speed (although not by hS2 standards) services on the existing lines which is what they need. To coin a phrase "they don't need to get to London 10/20 minutes faster".

Phase 2a with Lichfield/A38 and Stone/Stoke/Stafford parkway might actually be deliverable for single digit billions as it would benefit local people (and actually Shropshire)

Stoke and Stafford were to be served directly by HS2. Lichfield would have seen 4 trains an hour both intercity and local services, plus the opportunity to change at Stoke for HS2.

Stone could do with a really large railhead. I propose twice the size of what was proposed before, if phase 2a is revived.

I tried not to ignore capacity! Speed is capacity, and intermediate stations reduce capacity by reducing speed.

The real benefit to the intermediate stations is high capacity, high frequency, high speed (although not by hS2 standards) services on the existing lines which is what they need.

Some semi-fast services do exist but in countries such as Switzerland these would be classed as InterRegio rather than InterCity. I think we could do with a similar service designation under GBR personally.

But furthermore when high-speed rail ends up being a solution to a modal shift, it's competition is usually with domestic airlines be that Paris to Lyon, Madrid to Barcelona, and even across a lot of Italy where part of Alitalia's bankruptcy was down to the convenience of the Freccia services. Even HS1 enables Eurostar to increase it's market shares in the London to Paris/Brussels market.

Even the Tokaido Shinkansen which was built for the same reasons as HS2 (capacity relief of an existing mainline) has absorbed much of the market share between Tokyo and Osaka, and HS2 would've done the same with the London to Manchester air market along with some of the Glasgow/Edinburgh to London air market. The classic network meanwhile would absorb the modal shift from road travel.

The point I am making is that while intermediate stations can be beneficial for high-speed rail, it should only really be when it serves major cities or acts as a Parkway station for those major cities. Rural areas probably wouldn't get the same level of ridership. If they did, Eurostar would've brought back their stops at Ashford and Ebbsfleet, and even Virgin aren't too interested in bringing it back with their potential competition.

This is what has drawn me to a station on the A43. It meets the brief of "Parkway" station for the major cities. I do believe that there will need to be a large town somewhere there too which will bring about the "major cities" service too.

Although there are others on the thread who are using rail based rationales, such as where other lines cross, I cannot see how such interchanges offer value when it is so hard to use them as a parkway.

I think the reason that Eurostar/Virgin/xxx are not interested in the South East stops is that they are not trying to fill seats between London and Kent, the market is international and hence needs border controls etc. Having separate provision for a domestic service just does not work. I do wonder whether we would see some Kent calls if there was no border. Maybe the border control issue is part of why no international operator is interested in restoring the Kent stations, but I wouldn't say they were the only reason, otherwise Lille would've been dropped as well. Granted Lille would still be kept open by SNCF since it is a major hub, but that's also why it works better because it's not just an intermediate station in a rural area, though I could maybe see an argument for Ashford being a kind of Kent parkway station.

Where do high-speed lines like the Shinkansen that have a large number of intermediate stops that are not "major hub stations" fit here? It's quite easy to find stations that aren't major hubs on HSR lines.

Reducing top speed also increases capacity, as the studies from when the signalling system and speed specification was done demonstrate.

Eliminating the notional 360kph capability in favour of 320 or 300kph gets your several more paths per hour by shortening the limiting headway - which would allow a mixed traffic pattern

And obviously, HS2 has managed to build an 18tph railway that will probably never see anything close to that, because it can't take up enough traffic - so the supposedly saved paths were wasted anyway.

In any case, using modern high performance, high speed EMUs, a train could stop multiple times on the London-Birmingham-Manchester and still handily beat the classic railway.

While 320km/h would suffice compared to 360km/h, it's worth remembering that the track alignment and engineering can similarly be built for such speeds that might never be met. The Channel Tunnel can theoretically have trains run at 200km/h but is unlikely to ever actually see it.

In any case, using modern high performance, high speed EMUs, a train could stop multiple times on the London-Birmingham-Manchester and still handily beat the classic railway.
I'm sure it could but the question is whether or not it'd be worth it. High-speed rail though isn't intended to serve intermediate stations in rural areas so the priority should be serving cities and hub points.

The 360kph capability is part of the capacity requirement as well. The trains would not usually operate at that speed, they would run around 330kmh, unless they were behind schedule - you'd have services coming from the existing network and attempting to fit into a tight space - therefore if there was too much headway ahead, it could speed up and ensure the schedule. 300 would only give you another ~2 paths, but it would also be tight and require a higher capability if behind. The other limiting factor is Euston.

17 trains an hour was enough to replace the express services on WCML and ECML plus a few extra, which then would have fully released both lines for what is really intended with the capacity.

The conversion from technical headway to operational headways was very generous in terms of including padding in the original HS2 estimates.

18 trains per hour was to be achieved with a technical headway of only 150 seconds at 360kph.
It's unlikely that, short of a total service collapse, that trains would ever truly crowd on the route.

And on the very rare cases that that happens, you can always resort to cutting trains at the start of the core segment and move the passengers.

EDIT: And that 150 second headway was assumed using ETCS signal blocks 2000m long. The cost of fitting much shorter blocks would be a negligible portion of the cost of the scheme and could get technical headways under 100 seconds at 300kph (400m blocks). That's especially true as in the 15 years we've been waiting the long awaited ETCS L2/3 Hybrid has finally entered revenue service.

EDIT #2: Source on the technical headway was the Bombardier report for HS2 'Capacity evaluation for ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) Level 2 operation on HS2' from 2011.
The other limiting factor is Euston.
HS2's original plan for Euston was extremely generous in platform capacity. To the point that a train from Birmingham would spend more time waiting in the platforms at Euston than it would spend moving on the inbound.
Numerous high speed rail termini operate far more intensely than the original Euston plan.

Doing that required that the later phases all be completed in full. The project suffers almost total collapse in benefits if those projects are not all completed.
And here we are now as a result, with a very high capacity line that will likely never be used at more than a fraction of its capability.

After all, the highest speed domestic service in the UK serves a bunch of comparatively small stations in Kent.

It's an enabling technology, sure, but it is one with a broad range of applications.
Obviously it doesn't strictly have a single purpose, in many cases like Tokaido Shinkansen, LGV Sud-Est and HS2 it serves as both a capacity relief and a way to encourage a modal shift from air and road to rail through released capacity on the classic network and faster journey times. High-speed rail works best when it fulfils those multiple purposes.

But at the same time it's not a technology so broad that it could be applied to anything. High-speed rail is very obviously intended to serve as a long distance network dedicated exclusively to passenger trains. It doesn't lend itself well to a semi-fast stopping service connecting cities to towns and villages, especially when the stations are located on the outskirts of town.

That analysis is the tail wagging the dog. The high speed network should stretch the country, therefore the first section has minimal stops. What made it look like they were scrabbling? We may be able to clear up a persistent misunderstanding.

HS2's original plan for Euston was extremely generous in platform capacity. To the point that a train from Birmingham would spend more time waiting in the platforms at Euston than it would spend moving on the inbound.
Numerous high speed rail termini operate far more intensely than the original Euston plan.


Doing that required that the later phases all be completed in full. The project suffers almost total collapse in benefits if those projects are not all completed.
And here we are now as a result, with a very high capacity line that will likely never be used at more than a fraction of its capability.
The uplift is just as generous, if not more, on the classic railway when dealing with planning headways. The WCML south of Crewe operates around the 75 second mark. So reducing the block sections is still going to make little difference. What is the stopping distance for a train at 320km/h anyway, you don't really want it ending up in the next section.

My view is that HS2 should have been built as a four track railway, from Ruislip to Wendover.
  • At the southern end, the "slow" lines (125mph, W8 or W12 gauge, 10-12 tph) could have used the New North Mainline on the surface to a new terminus station at Old Oak Common, whilst the"fast" lines (250kph, UIC-GC gauge, 12-18tph) should have gone into tunnel direct to Euston.

  • At the north end, the fast line continue along the HS2 alignment (18tph). The slow lines merge onto an electrified Chiltern Mainline, via Aylesbury, EWR and a new East-North chord in Bicester, with station calls at (1) Aylesbury, (2) a new park and ride station on the M25, and (3) a new town the size of Milton Keynes at Calvert.
HS2 awared the civils contract C1, to construct the Chiltern tunnels and Colne Valley viaduct, to the ALIGN joint venture in 2017 for a cost of £965 million and a reported outturn cost of £1.6 billion. So the additional civils cost of four-tracking this section of route would have been less than £1.6 billion.

And if they should have built the "slow" lines with the stations first.

What is the stopping distance for a train at 320km/h anyway, you don't really want it ending up in the next section.
The stopping distance for an HS2 train at 360km/h under normal braking is 12 km. 7.6km in emergency (plus 0.1km for every second of thinking time before the brakes are applied).

That is an interesting proposition, but would throw away all the benefits of OOC. No longer would huge swathes of the South West have access, but you would have also cut off Heathrow. The OOC cost to the fast trains is non-negligible, but is justified.

There is no stopping your four track solution working alongside the main HS2 serving OOC.

For the new town, you would also be forcing the construction of new trunk roads across many fields to reach Calvert, when the A43 corridor already exists. I cannot see why we need an interchange station betwen HS2 and EWR. An express coach can serve the A43 station after all. Cambridge to HS2 will likely still be faster via Kings Cross and Euston, whilst Oxford to the North West is already direct using CrossCountry.

I'd expect to have cross overs between the fasts and the slows so that say 4tph from Aylesbury would go direct to Euston, and 4-8tph from the main HS2 line would terminate at OOC.

The cost of stopping at an intermediate station on a high-speed line is huge. From 360kph, it takes 220s to stop and 534s to get back up to line speed, by which time a non-stop train will be 35km further ahead of the stopping train. (OOC is not as bad as that, because trains are already slowing for Euston anyway, but it is still a large time penalty. And it means that the expensive tunnels from OOC to Euston will only ever carry 18tph and will only ever be half full).

That's why I think HS2 airport station is a waste of money. If you're going to build a 4-platform through station 15m underground then do it in Manchester city centre, where it will do some good, rather than in a field a mile away from the airport terminal.

I think HS2 should serve Manchester Airport by splitting at Crewe with 200m units calling at Crewe and Wilmslow and terminating on the 200m platforms at Airport. If you want a park and ride service for Cheshire businessmen heading to London, then extend the platforms cheaply at Chelford with a massive new car park accessed directly from the A34.

What braking rate is that assuming?

Deceleration has to be feeble at high speeds because of the huge kinetic energy that has to be pumped back into the OHLE or dumped into the brakes.
