In a strange parallel to the Class 777 (though these units are not nearly so bad by the looks of things) there's one of the project team on Twitter/X (@huwsdavis) expecting to bask in glory but getting some criticism, particularly of the seating, and seeming to take mild offence at it just like the Merseyrail guy...

(Note to mods, quoting a stream of interrelated Tweets of multiple authors in a meaningful way is fairly hard, so if quoting would be required on this post please delete it, thanks)

I couldn't tell when the engines kicked in on the way north or cut out on the way back, but the engiens were definietely working when i left the train at Leicester (!)

I did hear the thud as the pan dropped.
It was a bit weird not hearing the distinct “purring” that my namesake engines make!

I’m going to do a run to Market Harborough one day; so I look forward to hearing the thud on the way back!

Social media post with photos of today's first run

On more than one platform.

The driver now deals with all CFA and PAU events.
The TM then does the normal PTI dispatch procedure.
What do CFA, PAU and PTI stand for?

The TMS system sends an alarm to the driver if the toilet had been occupied closed and locked for more than 15 mins!
Toilet alert is similar to that on 701s. Can be quite annoying, at random.
Do the 701s also have the 15-minute toilet alert, then?

What are they like between London and Leicester using AC compared to the 222s that run on diesel? Faster ride does it feel like?

I would imagine no difference on a Sheffield as the main advantage of electric is acceleration and they don’t stop under wires. Would be interesting to see if there’s any improvement on the Market Harborough or Kettering stops on the Nottingham’s

Apparently it developed several faults during the day, would seem they’ve been rectified now hopefully if it managed to complete its full diagram today.
There were definitely some minor issues with the doors. When I was onboard there were a lot of Hitachi staff, and they were discussing whether to do a door reset at Nottingham, but that didn't actually happen. I think they had to reset the engines as well.

An important point none of our pioneering passengers of today have mentioned yet:

What's the mobile reception like? Surely it's better than on the 222s?
The mirror film on Class 222 windows reflects everything away - mobile signals / GPS, the lot!
Hitachi Class 800/801/802 and 803 have generally been really god for mobile / GPS reception. EMR stated there is a grey tint on their windows, not sure if that is a variation on glass used on other Class 80x and how that affects reception.

I note that train manufacturers are realising that UV reflective films in wndow glass are not helpful to Rf signals and have developed products to aid UV reflection but allowing better radio sigal penetration through the glass. Apparently it is a cheaper solution to having to install 4G/5G signal repeaters in each vehicle.

PTI is definitely platform-train interface
Think CFA is Call For Aid, PAU not sure.
What is meant by this?
'platform' = social media website (in this case, being reported on twitter as well as Bluesky)

Trains in electric mode generally have more rail power available and can accelerate faster. The midland main line has quite a few locations where speed has to be reduced for curvature, so the train in electric mode will more likely regain its top speed earlier once the slower restriction has passed.

One also has to note that in GWR land for exampe at times almost 1 in 3 Class 80x trains is running with at least one engine isolated or not giving out its full power - which affects the ability to accelerate quickly in diesel mode.

The maximum linespeed on the Midland main line is 125mph as far as Irchester and then 110mph onwards to Leicester. There are plenty of places where the trainnhas to sow and reaccelerate to top speed - tis list is not exhaustive - 100mph through St Albans, 90mph through Luton, 110mph through Bedford, 110mph over Sharnbrook summit, 80mph through Wellingborough, 95 mph through Kettering, 100mph at Desborough, 85mph through Market Harborough - 80mph around Wigston North Junction. From Leicester northbound it is a similar pattern.

I think you'd have had to be quite close. I was almost underneath. (Don't know what happened on the way back when the pan was raised as first class was at the rear and I'm not made of money).
(The pantograph on the rear car was used in both directions)

Curiously, I thought the seating was fine on my round trip, and I had a nice look round the Richard III Centre in Leicester. But when I tried to get out at St Pancras my back pain flared up, making the standing-room only journey home on Tube and local train excruciating. (Imoproved overnight, thanks) .

The difference may be that I had a table seat on the way north and an airline seat on the way back. The seats may be identical, but you need to go through some contortions to get out of the airline seats.

The accessible toilet on 810006 is reported on EMR service updates as being out of use, I guess they didn't fix the issue!

It was working on 010 yesterday.

Maybe the issue has been fixed and another fault has occurred!

And is it both accessible toilets or just one?

Sounds like both to me:

"Facilities on the 11:32 St Pancras International to Sheffield due 13:42.
Accessible toilet facilities are not available."

701s do have a 15 minute timer alert if someone's been detected in the toilet for that period of time. Alerts driver and switches camera to focus on the outside door of the offending toilet. Guard gets alerted where reasonably possible by driver over intercom.

The accessible toilet at the 1st class end was oou leaving Sheffield on 810010 with the 1400 to St.P yesterday afternoon and the fitters (plumbers) were still trying to fix when it got to Derby

I've been informed they are trying to sort the issue out on the move to prevent the swap from happening
so far no announcement on thetrain about any swaps. what is the issue?
Sitting in coach A, the HVAC drone seems noisier than other 80x classes.
