I have a first Advance (single ticket) from Newcastle to King’s Cross today, with the following reservations:

Newcastle 1035 - 1157 Doncaster - Cross Country

Doncaster 1204 - 1344 King’s Cross - Grand Central

We’ve left York 6 minutes late. If I miss my connection at Doncaster, which seems almost certain, the next GC service isn’t for several hours.

Am I right in thinking that I have a theoretical right to travel on LNER? But that enforcing that right is going to be difficult?

And what is the best approach at Doncaster to get to London quickly?

Tia

Update: in a rare piece of integration, the GC was rerouted into platform 3A, and we came into 3B, so an easy connection. GC waited 4 minutes for connecting passengers.

What if it wasn't an Advance, but an Off Peak or Anytime GC only?

I've been to Hull a few times. I've been reluctant to buy Hull Trains only tickets except for Advances. Am I right to be concerned about having to wait for the next Hull Trains service if one is cancelled or delays elsewhere mean I miss the intended train?

Hull Trains are better for arranging ticket acceptance than Grand Central, so I wouldn't see that as a major concern.

That, however, may be a greater concern.

Obviously too late now, but in those circumstances it might be a good idea to find the Train Manager of the XC train and ask them to communicate to the staff at Doncaster station and ask whether it is possible to delay the next train for a few minutes so that you can make your connection.

In my case, they did indeed delay the GC a few minutes, which was a pleasant surprise.

There were a fair number of people making the connection, and there was an announcement on XC as we pulled into Doncaster.

Doncaster station staff are not going to be delaying a train's departure without instruction from elsewhere. The request would need, in the first instance, to go to XC control.
