The first photograph shows the arrangements before the recent work took place. Passengers walked down the ramp, opened the gate and then turned right onto the crossing. Now there is additional fencing and a "dog-leg" in the path that means you are facing the crossing before you open the gate. This gives you the opportunity to look both left and right down the track before opening the gate
I've just been to have a look.
Curious that there's a dog-leg only on one side. On the other, the "Stop Look Listen" signs are on the rail side of the gate, and indeed there's a stop line painted on the path that suggests they expect you to wait on the rail side of the gate for a train to pass.
And the new surface appears to be peeling off already.
There are also now signs saying that the level crossing is for access to the station only - I presume for legal purposes to avoid establishing a right of way, because clearly they expect and are happy for people to use it otherwise.
it is not clear to me why this work required such a lengthy closure.
The platform extension seems to be coming along nicely anyway.
It's also interesting that despite the lack of trains, the ticket machine will happily sell you a ticket from Ty Glas and the PAYG pole is active.
While I was there, there were a couple of announcements in Welsh but no English version.
