Some of the handsets in the saloon area can allow you to make really clear announcements without having feeling like you have to put it directly on your mouth, but it’s hit and miss on even one unit let alone the whole 701 class. You are right though, the handsets in the cabs are of a much higher quality and you can use them normally. The handsets in the saloon areas are made of cheap plastic and have a horrible design, they are so small and are straight, and the advice us guards have been given is to place the bottom of the handset where the microphone is next to your mouth so it picks up your voice better. But because the button you have to hold to speak is so close to the mic since the handset is laughably small and cheap, it makes it a lottery if your announcement will be legible or not, even if you are using it as advised...
