Front coach has derailed and came to a stand in the 6ft.does anyone know the severity of the derailment?
Depends entirely on the condition of the trackwork really.Glad to hear no reported injuries.
Considering the status as advised in earlier posts (train upright still), what would the general timescale be for the re-opening of the line?
Have tickets booked from Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport on Wednesday as flying out of Manchester Thursday mid-morning. Unsure whether to start making alternative arrangements or not.
Right, if anyone wants to discuss the arrangements when there is disruption of any kind north of Preston then please use/start another thread so we can keep this thread for discussion of the derailment.
thanks
Depends how much secondary damage there is but I would have a look today at what options for going down ECML to York and across you have. Especially as you are travelling day before flight that should be relatively simple.Glad to hear no reported injuries.

It was deleted yes. I believe it was as-yet unverified (although certainly looked like a derailed 390 in a remote location).Has a picture of the derailed train been posted and deleted? Or am I imagining things?

Yes I posted it but couldn’t verify it as just got sent it ( news travels very fast in mess rooms )Has a picture of the derailed train been posted and deleted? Or am I imagining things?
Tickets currently being accepted via York, and that will presumably continue until the line re-opens - which will hopefully be well within 48 hours anyway.Glad to hear no reported injuries.

I have seen a picture on Facebook but dont want to share as I am not sure of who or how it was taken, however if you search 'North Yorkshire Weather Updates' on Facebook and look in the comments on their latest post you will see itHas a picture of the derailed train been posted and deleted? Ok, thank you.Yes I posted it but couldn’t verify it as just got sent it ( news travels very fast in mess rooms )
I understand(Yes, sorry about that @Louby - it's just that without it being somewhere online that's attributable, I couldn't 100% verify it was from this incident)
I'm not surprised. Been utterly sopping here this past week, even by Western Scotland standards. Last night was particularly bad (even tho I slept through most of it).NetworkRail Scotland had already applied reduced speed limits on various lines in Scotland with the forecasted rain over Monday and Tuesday. The WCML was one of those routes but I didn't look up the exact location.

Its an access point they also need to find. Not just the train.Thanks.
I note the same thread suggests there was an initial problem with the blue lights finding the location........same as Greyrigg. I realise signalling can only limit the location to a certain extent, but surely there must be something in a modern train that records its precise location continuously, and that can be shared with the emergency services at times like these?? Seems ridiculous that they're driving up and down looking for a train.....
The BBC News live thread is appealing for images now so we may get something there soon.(Yes, sorry about that @Louby - it's just that without it being somewhere online that's attributable, I couldn't 100% verify it was from this incident)
I believe the limit in that area is 80mph, with no EPS.Back to the actual incident, how fast might the Southbound Avanti have been travelling if it had left Penrith North Lakes at 0559? 80+ m.p.h.? Got to be over thirteen miles from there to the Shap Summit area. Won't have helped also that first light in the Shap area this morning wouldn't have been until at (or around) 0639, so maybe some half an hour after the train collided with whatever it was that was blocking the line at approximately 0610.
According to the BBC, they have been moved to the Shap Wells Hotel which is very close by.Given the location, it must be a challenge to move the crew and passengers to a safe location and away.
James Burrow, who was on the derailed service, said "there was a flash and a bang," before staff quickly informed passengers the train had derailed.
He said he was escorted off the train at 08:50 to go to the nearby Shap Wells Hotel.
Officers were called at 6.15am today to reports of a train derailment in near Shap, Cumbria.
Thankfully, there are no reported casualties and passengers have been safely escorted from the train.
Officers remain on scene alongside emergency services responding to the incident.
I just looked at the weather radar over the last 12 hours and it's been pretty much non stop over Cumbria. Looks like the tail end of Hurricane Melissa which is now over the north atlantic and bringing bands of rain across.I'm not surprised.
