On a Circle line train between Paddington and Kings Cross St Pancras late one Sunday night, I saw a drunk who had obviously soiled himself. He looked so ashamed, unsuprisingly.

You would expect toilets in First Class lounges to be just as they are at home.

I won't name the station, but imagine my horror recently when I found a First Class customer had left their excrement on the floor and even stuck some along the wall with dirty paper strewn everywhere. I had pity on the poor person who had to clean it up.

This seems to be a common occurrence in lot's of public places. I really don't know why some sick sods have to do this? Like you said, I feel sorry for the poor soul that has to clean it up!:|

Used condoms, vomit, excrement, needles, blood, saliva, you name it - all things which railway staff and passengers come across all the time and which train cleaners have to deal with every day.

That's all too common in all walks of life. I get the impression it's due to the fact they know someone else has to clean it up unlike at home where it will fester until they clean it themselves.

Yuckiest thing I've ever seen was on the New York subway - someone had literally used a seat as a toilet and done a number 2 on it.

Oh and I once threw up a curry all over the gangway of a transpennine express 158 between Man Picc and Liv Lime Street - this was in 2004...

i also seen a tramp get on a district line service about 4 years ago at paddington going to wimbledon and he fell asleep against the plastic sheet near the doors and the train was hot and this poor tramp was sweating an ocean but as his head was leaning against the plastic sheet every time the train moved his head moved forward and back causing a big smear across it it was not that pleasent also noting that he farted in his sleep aswell

You mentioning tramp reminds me of another incident on the Circle Line a few years back on my way from Blackfriars to Liverpool Street. It was late at night and did seem odd that that the middle section of the carriage was unoccupied at that time of night....apart from this old dosser.
A couple of stops down the line he just whacked his old chap out and it was golden shower time.
I could never take my old dad anywhere.....

I'm glad you've added that comment, because it makes it less hard on you for me to criticise your original post. I'm astonished that anyone is disturbed or distressed by the changing of a baby's nappy!
We live in a world which tries to put a range of products, goods, services and barriers between life as it really is and the sanitised version where things like nappy-changing are hidden from view; a world which allows us to think these bodily functions are not a vital part of life.

I'd prefer to see more nappy changing, more babies, more of life as it really is. And I'd like to be seeing that life on the railways as much as anywhere else.

If you hadn't added that comment, I was going to advise you to go and assist a few babies and infants yourself, just to get used to the smells and the contact with whatever dribbles out of us when we're young and before we're, er, civilised.

'Yuk' is surely a response from the point of view of a fabricated world where nature itself can be abhorrent?

Ditto to every single word!

To the OP: So a nappy was changed. Would you rather the baby sat there in a dirty nappy? Its a baby. Not a grown up adult taking his/ her underwear down and cleaning themselves in front of you. Its like those people that moan about breast feeding in public. I have seen nappies changed and breast feeding before, in public, and i have never once batted an eyelid.
Some people turn their nose up far too easily.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
When she lifted the little chap's legs up and started wiping around his backside I thought she was revelling in the demonstration!

Eh? What? Its called making sure the babies backside is thoroughly clean.
It needs to be done like this because otherwise the babies backside stays dirty. Remember when you were that age? Well the exact same thing happened to you.
I somehow doubt the woman was doing this for the pure sake of it.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
An African woman did this on a bus once (packed bus)... me and a few other passengers told her in no uncertain terms how disgusting her actions was, and she got off at the next stop !

You mean there are more people out there who are far too easily offended? The baby needed his/ her nappy changed. Its not fair to make the baby go round with a dirty nappy (hold on, that would be disgusting. So you dont like disgusting things, but you do like disgusting things? Which is it to be?). If i was the driver of that bus (which is unlikely considering i cant drive the things), id have chucked you off for making a passenger feel uncomfortable.

OK, if you want to see discusting, I'd sudgest you turn to a website where the x replaced the you in youtube.com and just type in train. Then you might see where some of the public hair comes from.

Personally I can't really say if I have seen or done anything 'discusting' on a train, I've been drunk, in Manchester, with my boyfriend, on a deserted 185 or 142. I've also been travelling with a date on an empty (and I mean it was the two of us, guard and driver) between Selby and York aswell. No mentions at all of what we might have been doing...

And back to the topic, seriously, I work in a place that is an attraction aimed at 2 to 12 year olds, we have 3 baby changing facilities all around the place but when it's busy that isn't enough (it isn't designed for babies but they still come as part of families). All I do is advise the pearants that disposal facilities are available in the baby changing and where it is, I'm not critical of them, generally they go out of the way into a buggy parking area anyway.

Although if I go back to somthing I have mentioned before, I wonder what the reaction would be like if I started changing a 19 year old on a train, beit in or out of a toilet. I don't think anyone would be so quick to defend my actions? All I tended to get was dirty looks when walking out of the disabled toilet with him.

Or an old dear's incontinence pants. Why should granny sit in soiled underwear for the 45 minutes it takes to get to her destination?

I seem to have offended (how ironic) a few people here. I just think that there's a time and a place (well okay a place anyway) for these things, and given that a fairly crowded train isn't it, a brief nod of apology would not have gone amiss. I wonder if they'd have done the same if the child (not a baby, as I said earlier) had been a girl, and the person opposite was a man. Anyone familiar with Merseyrail knows how close together the facing seats are, and tbh my first thought was if (male) kiddo hasn't quite finished yet it could be me rushing to the loo on arrival to wipe down my own clothes!

Christmas time brings out the worst in passengers.

When I was a line of route fitter I used to hate doing the walk throughs on the arrivals onto depot when the office party season was in full swing 'cos of the state of the trains (and on several occasions the people who were too out of it to take notice of the announcements and lights going off at the terminal station - and 'cos they were so ****ed you couldn't detrain them in the yard for safety reasons so the unit had to be dug out of the yard and run up to the nearest station where it would take several BTP officers to get them off the train).

The worst that I've ever seen in a saloon, found by a colleague and called up on the radio so everyone came to have a look, was an absolutely massive turd - both in length and bore - that was curled up in nice neat spiral on a seat cushion, with a 50 pence piece and a little note saying "sorry" next to it.

Other things that have been found include several thousand dollars stuffed down a toilet (BTP reckoned a drug deal was going down and got disturbed), numerous large blood stained knives and god knows how many used syringes....

The state of the toilets is another matter and not for public consumption...

As if 50p would cover the cleaning. At least the owner of said turd was good enough to apologise.

On a packed commuter train heading from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stratford Upon Avon quite a few years ago was the worst I saw. On doing tickets I noticed a very pasty and ill looking gent consuming a rather large box of noodles. He was on the wrong train for a start as he wanted Acocks Green, so I tried to expalin he was on the wrong line but he just looked at me spaced out. I had to do the doors at Small Heath so went to the back to key in. In the meantime Mr Noodle had walker further up the train (presumably to find the toilet).

After leaving Small Heath I went down to find him, but didn't need to look far, as a horrendously loud wretching sound followed by a large splat came from the middle keying in point. I arrived to see this bloke slumped on the floor surrounded by a huge pile of sicked up noodles. I think I asked him to leave the train as he was in no fit state to travel, on which point he slurreed 'Acocks Green' and evicted yet another horrendous mass of pungent noodles from his stomach.

It was 5 years before I ate Chow Mein again!

After Thursday's Northern Heights walk + meal, I departed KGX on the 0011 service back home, but before I boarded we (I was with yorkie and Mojo at the time) saw a man who was leaning over the glass beside the bufferstop (this was platform 11) and it looked like he was about to fall down onto the track/buffers, so we got a Network Rail security staff member (AFAIK) and they went over to speak to the man, but his friends had got him under control. He was in no fit state to be on a train, but the security staff member let him on, and they got in the first carriage, while I got in the third.

I forgot about the man being there until my stop approached, where I went to go towards the back of the train (at my stop the stairs are at the back of the platform, and the trains stop right at the front of the platform) and I opened the door between carriages 3 and 2... to find the gentleman throwing up on a copy of the Evening Standard in the corridor connection between the two. I decided that I would not go through the train, and got away from him as quickly as possible!

I was heading out of King's Cross on a 365 the other day, and somebody had left a Daily Mail on the seat. I've never seen anything quite as disgusting.

This has to be the worst so far. I am now feeling quite sick, knowing that I may have sat on that very seat since.

Another on Merseyrail (with no toilets onboard)... a guy caught short after a night out in Liverpool and on the way back to Chester, just stood there in front of a full carriage and relieved himself directly onto a seat! The only good bit of this was the amount of abuse he got from the rest of the carriage for being so disgusting (including all the girls he'd been previously attempting to chat up during the journey!). Unfortunately he ran off on arrival at Chester before any of the train staff could be informed. Hopefully no one sat in that seat on the return to Liverpool!

I was at Stratford waiting for an EB Central Line train one Saturday night. As the train pulled in, I noticed one carriage was particularly empty.

On closer inspection, there was a large pile of vomit in the middle of the carriage, next to which was an empty bottle of Jack Daniels.

Guess some people can't hold their drink...

In the 1980s, I was travelling on an old style DMU from Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North, looked under a seat & there was a large pair of soiled knickers!

Seen so many disgusting things on trains over the years.

Defrosted frozen chicken dumped under the seat next to the heaters on a north London lines 104. Human remains hanging off 60079's boogie springs after an 'incident' at Millbrook whilst working 6M23, and the usual stomach churning scenes in toilets. Oh, there was the turd on an arm rest in the first class compartment of a 4 CIG that had been thoughtfully squashed into the seat by raising the arm rest back to the stowed position. Nice.

As you leave Newark castle towards nottingham there is a traveller camp next to the line. Its not unheard of for the youngsters there to throw horse manure at the train. One kid had particularly good aim and managed to make a large smelly lump through the hopper window of a 156.
