I was on a Merseyrail Liverpool to Chester service today, and a family with a small child (bigger than a baby, more a toddler) lay him on the seat opposite mine and changed his nappy, complete with wipes etc. Not a word of "sorry" or "excuse us, it's an emergency". I didn't know where to look. I know there's no toilet facilities on MRail trains but they had just boarded at a station with facilities.

Not sure if it's wise to ask for other stomach churning sights, but had to record my annoyance. Some people just don't seem to care about anyone but themselves.

Nice sense of timing, posting as people will be coming back from their tea <D

For me it was the probably the jackass on a 323 who thought it would be fun to put his feet on the seats when his shoes were filthy (and not just mud!)

to go off topic: the nicest thing I saw on a train was three teenage girls getting on the train at Bournville with huge boxes of chocolate.

A big pile of sick on a seat on a 158.

Someone had covered it with a newspaper, but as the train was quite busy, people kept picking up the newspaper to sit down as they thought the seat was free...

I've seen a dog crap on a Voyager seat, and a drunk golf fan throw up on a 395. He then got up and walked innocently into the next coach, as if no one saw him. It wasn't just a little heave, he emptied himself into the corner where he was sitting.

On a GNER trains years ago, I was sat in the smoking carriage when a drunken fella let off what was proably a world record for the dirtiest fart which also sounded quite damp at the same time, as it an HST loads of people tried to get in the vestibule to escape the smell and drop the windows on the door after he dropped his guts...

So many memories of disgraceful behaviour and disgusting sights to choose from over 20 years commuting!

But my all time stand out memory was the poor Chinese fella whose wife slammed the train door (must have been in the 1980s) after they had boarded, not realising his fingers were still gripping the outside of the carriage. Much blood, and it looked like the top of his finger had been severed.

Pretty yucky, but whilst my grasp of mandarin/cantonese is non-existent, she appear to be telling him not to make such a fuss!

A while back, I was sitting next to the loo on a 450. It was a nice clean loo when the pale looking man went in. He made some strange noises, and two stations later he opened the door and came out and not one surface of the loo wasn't covered in thick grey vomit. I have never seen a carriage empty so quickly.

With no toilets on the train so I'm not sure what they were supposed to do?

Use the facilities at the station? Nonetheless, this isn't a debate about whether or not it's right but a general ickiness factor :o

In 2001, I was on a VXC from York to Bristol PW, when the ECML was shut at Great Heck when that Land Rover driver fell asleep at the wheel. It was a load of coaches (no better than mk2) pulled by a tatty looking 47. The train was supposed to go via Doncaster, but we were routed via Pontefract instead. There weren't any seats, so I had to stand in the vestibule opposite the bog. Whilst I was there, no-one used it - until I had to. The pan was full (and I mean full) of the brown stuff. There wasn't any water left in the cistern (or whatever you call it) so you couldn't flush it away, not that it would have done the job! I had to stop 3 people from using it, and the guard came up, checking tickets. I pointed out that the bog was effectively out of order, and he checked for himself. His comments were unprintable in a fine, upstanding thread like this, and he locked the bog with his coach key. I held on till Brum, when the train unloaded most of the passengers. I managed to get a seat near a working bog.
It wasn't the smell (which was close to being a flammable hazard) but the sheer quantity! It must have been used at least 4 times without flushing and I can only assume people were THAT desperate!
If you find this disgusting.........isn't that the point?

Funny how most of the examples on this thread are toilet related, except my opening post which was because there wasn't a toilet on board! At least I presume so, but I still can't understand why they didn't sort the kid out at the station, as they had only just got on the train when they started pulling out wipes and nappy bags.

I went into a toilet after a bloke had been in there about 15 minutes, and I imagine from the state of it that he hadn't known how the flush worked, and also that he'd been on the vindaloo the previous night. Nuff said.

Pre E* my trips back from Spain to London used to involve a late connection from Cerbere to Lyon and onwards....but that train from north of Barca to the border had started in Algeciras and was full of North Africans off to parts various of Europe.
They had their families and then some in tow and every time the train stopped at a station - normally five-ten minutes in those days, their disregard of what we - as in Europe - would class as common decency was totally defenestrated.
I just parked myself by a door opposite from where the train would pull into the platform, plugged in my Sony Walkman full blast and dreamed of being somewhere else.. horrible it was.

Never witnessed this but it was in the Sun many moons ago, so obviously true, when a couple were shagging each other's brains out in a first class carriage and nobody complained until they sparked up after the money shot.
A very British coup, no less.... :D

Ok beat this if you can gents, I was once on a late night Nottingham to Lincoln EMT service. It was a saturday and there were a few drunks aboard, now the toilet on the train (156 iirc) was u/s and this guy was moaning he needed the loo, nothing could prepare me for what happened next. I kid you not this is totally straight up true, this guy dropped his trousers and proceeded to lay a sizeable turd in the middle of the carrage. You wanted disgusting gentlemen.

OMG it makes today's nappy changing a teddybear's picnic. I am sorry I asked now .
I'm glad you've added that comment, because it makes it less hard on you for me to criticise your original post. I'm astonished that anyone is disturbed or distressed by the changing of a baby's nappy!
We live in a world which tries to put a range of products, goods, services and barriers between life as it really is and the sanitised version where things like nappy-changing are hidden from view; a world which allows us to think these bodily functions are not a vital part of life.

I'd prefer to see more nappy changing, more babies, more of life as it really is. And I'd like to be seeing that life on the railways as much as anywhere else.

If you hadn't added that comment, I was going to advise you to go and assist a few babies and infants yourself, just to get used to the smells and the contact with whatever dribbles out of us when we're young and before we're, er, civilised.

'Yuk' is surely a response from the point of view of a fabricated world where nature itself can be abhorrent?

I was heading out of King's Cross on a 365 the other day, and somebody had left a Daily Mail on the seat. I've never seen anything quite as disgusting.

Fair comment Dave. I still think it would have been polite to at least acknowledge that they were in a public place, 18 inches from an unsuspecting fellow traveller, and not at home in their own bathroom.

When she lifted the little chap's legs up and started wiping around his backside I thought she was revelling in the demonstration!

I was working the 23.10 from York to Manchester Airport about 7 years ago and there was a couple having sex over one of the tables in full view of other passengers. I phoned Control to request the BTP at Leeds and he asked "Are they in love?" and I replied that it seemed likely, as she had a big smile on her face. Arrive at Leeds and no BTP turned up and they got away with it.

I once saw David Cameron in First Class on an East Coast train, made me feel so sick that I couldn't stomach my free breakfast.

About 15 - 20 years ago some bright spark decided to re-diagram the Waterloo - Reading service ( which takes quite a long time ) from VEP / CIG operation to 455 ( ie toiletless ) operation.

Big mistake.

Especially late evening on a Saturday...

Anyone who had the misfortune to use that service at that time will probably remember the state the gangways between the carriages got into... There was also at least one occasion when I strong smell in one carriage was eventually traced when the seat squabs were lifted up after everything else in the carriage had been checked...

An African woman did this on a bus once (packed bus)... me and a few other passengers told her in no uncertain terms how disgusting her actions was, and she got off at the next stop !

They used to do that all the weekend for a while in the early noughties. Did someone honestly think that a 455 would be preferable to a slammer just because it happenned to be a few years younger !

I did live in Reading for a short while during that era.
