Class 222 from EMR to Polmadie

Seeing as how the Class 222 redeployment thread has been closed, it looks like the movement of an ex EMR Class 222 (222005?) from Barton Under Needwood RSMD to Polmadie has been rescheduled for Monday 27 October 2025.

It has set off, so looks like Lumo are getting their first 222 today. Wonder if it's going to be worked on first or put straight to use with route learning and traction training for Lumo's drivers. There are STP Lumo paths from Polmadie to Stirling and Motherwell most days so they're ready to be used.

Given it's a 7-car set, there is presumably a "both" option where 1-3 centre cars can be removed for refurbishment teams to start pulling apart whilst a shorter set runs around doing crew training. Given Lumo intend to operate them in 6-car formations, I'd have thought removing 1 before any training starts was a bit of a no-brainer.

Oops. Thanks. Facepalm. I do remember that most recent reshuffle of the 222 formations.

Perhaps the point still stands as it could theoretically run around as a 4.
Am I right in thinking that this train was originally put into service as a 9-car? To potentially see it running around as a 4 car would surely make it the railway equivalent of the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail (although perhaps HS2 already owns that dubious honour).

Correct. Shortened to 8, then 7, then 5.

All of 001-007 were originally 9-car.

007 went from 8 straight to 5, unlike 001-006 which all ran as 7s for many years, before 005 & 006 were also reduced to 5s, freeing up intermediate vehicles to extend the former Hull Trains sets from 4 to 5-cars.

So the gist is… no need to add any additional vehicles to 005 just yet. And certainly no reason to reduce it to 4 car.

Unbranded 222005 on route hasn't been put into Lumo colours. I presume that means the others as they go off lease will go for refurbishment before delivery

I wonder why they sent it to Stenson and then reverse to Crewe when it would have been much easier to go via Alrewas to Lichfield TV direct to Crewe. Unless of course the WCML has no gaps.

I guess I have had my last ride on a 7 car out of Derby then. Had 222003 on Friday

001 has been stopped for handover works and debranded. 002 has apparently been used as a bit of a Christmas tree for parts to get 001 back to condition for handover so neither are in traffic at the minute.

So a double whammy for the passengers in this disastrous transition to 810s and the loss of their trains to a dubious open access route. Should never have been allowed to happen this way, but it's one more blow to a route that's as neglected and sidelined now as it ever was in the 90s/00s.
