I read somewhere that an old rule of thumb for carriage design was 16 to the bum, 16 to the ton. That is a seat width of 16" (implying you could fit six people in an 8 foot wide non-corridor compartment) and that an average passenger would weight 1/16 of a ton (10 stone or 63.5 kg, which seems on the petite side)So if we assume an average of 80kg per passenger fully laden
