The average weight of passengers has changed over the years

So if we assume an average of 80kg per passenger fully laden
I read somewhere that an old rule of thumb for carriage design was 16 to the bum, 16 to the ton. That is a seat width of 16" (implying you could fit six people in an 8 foot wide non-corridor compartment) and that an average passenger would weight 1/16 of a ton (10 stone or 63.5 kg, which seems on the petite side)

That depends on when it was thought up: even fifty years ago the average weight was lower. Presuming that you have a mix of males and females, adults and children, that doesn‘t seem to be an unduly low figure.

For comparison the standard weight tables for airlines are 35kg for a child, 76kg for an adult on a holiday charter, and 84kg for all other flights.

Why would people on holiday charters weigh on average less than those on other flights?

We have all got heavier now, 14 or 15 per ton seems to be the latest figure.
