14th October 2025 - CHILTERN RAILWAYS MK5 PRESS LAUNCH

I would highly suspect these to be the press runs:

Mk5a Set 1Stourbridge Depot>3Z15>1R90>3J90>>>Stourbridge Depot
OR
Mk5a Set 2Wembley LMD>5H15>1R90>5Z63>5E55>Wembley LMD

Note that only 1 of the two sets will run.

Almost certain to be 68020 with CH05

Looking at RTT, this would appear to be more likely after 1R90 terminates, with the return to London being on a normal service train, given 5Z63 is booked to go onto the Wall Siding on arrival at Marylebone and I doubt most of those on board will have PTS.

Whilst there isn't a path showing for it I suspect Chiltern will have a second set on standby as a backup, likely at Wembley LMD, and 5Z63 will only run if that gets used.

Thank you as always for all of your efforts.

As I understand it, after the press run on 1R90 the Class 68/Mk5A set is due to run to Stourbridge Junction Depot on:

3J90 1421 Birmingham Moor Street to Stourbridge Jn Depot
(achieved via a reversal at Dorridge)

Thanks both, I've now updated my post.

5E99 is activated tonight, I assume this is 68012 returning.

Is that 1R90 on the 14th going to be open to regular ticket holders or is it going to be strictly invitation only?

Noting that it's running as 1R.. rather than 1Z.. and RTT lists it as "unadvertised express".

I'm not certain, but I believe it will be advertised as charter 'ticket holders only'

Drat - thanks - I feared as much... while I have 68 032 for haulage, CH13 is one of the rakes I still need... ah well, not long now until they're in general use anyway... :)

Another set is currently out, it worked 3N26 from Wembley Lmd to Bicester North Siding, and is currently working VST 3H27 back. It's unallocated but based on the list, can only be 68029/CH02

Eastleigh today at mid-day and slightly later:
In the works yard was 68026 coupled to a set (Presumably CH04 as above):
Another Class 68 (presumably 68022) visible inside the old test house - being worked on and appeared to be being put into new livery.
Over in the depot was another set (CH07??) which did not appear to have a locomotive attached.
Arriving at 1435 empty from Banbury: 68029 & Set marked TP04 (lable in the DT window). (11502 12704 12705 12706 12814): The whole train looked in remarkable clean exterior condition.View attachment 59624B Beleived 68022 Eastleigh Works 10.10.25.JPG

Ex Arriva Northern unit ,319380 is in the background next to 68022,
Renuited and standing, next to each other again, briefly once more, Whilst 68022 has a long term future sadly the 319 hasn't.

However it would have been around 2019 to 2020, 6 years ago, when both 68022 and it's, Transpennine mk5a set and this ex Arriva Northern unit 319380, would most certainly have featured alongside each other somewhere back up North Between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street, when the Transpennine mk5 a sets, was all but ready for a very long term future, back up North, when brand new.

However 6 years on its all changed and now the new life for 68022 and Mk5a Sets are with Chiltern railways.

How quickly time goes.

I used to get them home out of Liverpool. Never stopped at my station so I got the next stopper back. Did it because of the peculiarity of a brand new modern locomotive hauled train in the era of multiple units! Was better than the clapped out 319 I would have had to have used otherwise at the time heh. All zone day saver for the win.
The 68's sound awesome at full chat!

Why did loco hauled services go out of fashion? I mean it gives you loads of flexibility for formations and you can have a pool of spare locos that you can swap in and out as required instead of the whole train going u/s.

Unfortunately with the Mk5As there isn’t the flexibility you mentioned. Due to the onboard systems, Mk5A is effectively a five coach unit with a loco attached.

Back in BR days, 5 coaches was quoted as the break even point at which it became financially worthwhile to use a loco rather than having smaller engines under the coaches. I’m not sure if that financial rule still holds true.

One downside of a loco is you then have a single point of failure, whereas many units can carry on even with one engine out.

Another consideration is where platform space is limited, a loco takes up space where you could have had an extra passenger carrying vehicle.

On the other hand, a big disadvantage of a modern DMU is trying to keep a big diesel engine cool in a confined space.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d personally like to see a revival of loco haulage and I’d have all the Class 68s out on passenger work!

My bold.
That must be set TP02, they were the coaches for set TP02 including 12814 substituted for 12802 !.

You are certainly correct, the lable does say TP02 (photo attached) - a View attachment 190212senior moment obviously !
No probs - My turn next time for a senior moment .

That label raises some thoughts
I wish that "12814" said "12802" !.
Interesting date 13.02.2024 - must have been when it arrived for storage - at Long Marston ?.

68022 is now in the new ‘blue stripes’ scheme making it the 3rd ‘68’ to be re-liveried.
I am not certain that CH12 was the set that was delivered from Eastleigh today, can anyone confirm this?

@Whybother Many thanks.

For those of you after photos of the 'Blue' end of the 68s on Mk5As, 68022 is currently blue end leading.

I have simplified my posts (mostly to truncate all the details and make it easier for me to edit) and added all Mk3 and Mk5 set formations. Click on the spolier buttons to see the details.

The loco is the same way round as the other reliveried locos. Which means the 020 and 032 have actually had the light blue applied to the wrong end. So presumably they'll have to go back to be re-wrapped at some point.

Is it not possible to just turn the locos round?

@CR165022 has a point. If you compare these two pictures, 68022 appears to have a reversed livery.
Note the exhaust at the coaches end, so the locos are the same way around.

Images show 68020 and 68022 in the new Chiltern Railways blue stripes livery.
