During Edinburgh Cocktail week, broke our GLQ - EDB journey at Haymarket to pick up the wristbands etc near the Usher Hall. The ticket barriers kept our tickets but not for long ;) as I politely explained that we might wish to complete our journey later and would need the tickets to get through the barrier again. I requested the return of the tickets, which was done very quickly.
OK, I’ll know the next time and I understand that relatively few people will want to break a journey to Waverley at Haymarket but I know for a fact that Waverley to Charing Cross Glasgow tickets are not retained at the Queen Street barriers so I was wasn’t expecting this.

This has always been the case, since the vast majority of passengers are just terminating short. I've never had an issue with asking to be let through so I can keep hold of the tickets.

Indeed, thanks. I should have foreseen this, just posted to flag it up in case anyone else makes the same mistake.

Did the barriers accept the tickets for entry back into Haymarket following your break? It seems a rather unusual journey, although I sometimes observe a surprising number of passengers on the platform trying to board a Waverley-terminating service when I'm alighting at Haymarket. Surprising as in about two or three.

I quite often travel from Edinburgh Airport to Alnwick. So tram from the airport to Haymarket, then any old train to Waverley to connect with a train to Alnwick. If you have luggage Haymarket is much more convenient than St Andrew’s Square (for Waverley). Maybe this Haymarket - Waverley journey is quite common?

It's not an especially rare journey - I've even bought a ticket specifically to do it in the past. The bus and tram are sometimes barely any quicker than walking, so if you're trying to get to one of the stations (or something right by it) then it's potentially the best way.

Long ago those from an office in Palmerston Place, near Haymarket, if going to London, some would come in early to get ready, then go down to Haymarket station and get the first service to Waverley, identified by looking down from the footbridge, then on to the London train. Recollecting further, I think there were specific tickets for Haymarket to London, but the fare was the same.

Didn’t actually need to use them :) as the weather stayed fine, so we chose to walk up past Waverley to start the serious business of the day.
(Actually I’d rather have done a normal beer centred pub crawl, but didn’t want to disappoint the offspring).
