They introduced a couple of peak hour extras to and from Sutton but they always seem fairly empty. I wonder if this is because people have given up with the Southern services or if the higher price puts people off.
Honestly I would be surprised if this was the case, over on the Woolwich side of things pretty much most commuters have given up on SE since very few want the city this is why the EL has been rammed even off peak.
I really wish the overgound could terminate at east Croydon or at least regular service up line towards london bridge stopping at local stations, same with towards balham! If east Croydon constrained, doubtless even more so with recent development, could a turnaround platform be fit in South Croydon or one of the Purleys - the previous stopping trains (before covid was your london bridge via Peckham rye) used to head down to Caterham not really because it needed 4tph but because it was a place to turn trains around. Now with less trains the Peckham rye trains turn around usually on 5 or 6 at east Croydon but uses valuable platform space.
Something will have to be done with East Croydon eventually, ironing out Windmill Junction for starters, but also adding in two more platforms for trains to terminate there.
Agreed about East Croydon. It’s such an important interchange point but they make it hard as hell for local South Londoners to get to what with the obsession with West Croydon. No idea why they didn’t build a bay of terminating platforms west of East Croydon when they did it up a decade ago. Sick of the mindless disjointed rail travel in South London and if I hear the phrase “business case” mentioned as the reason for it one more time I am going to scream.
West Croydon obsession is weird, it’s a mid sized suburban station, which doesn’t have half the connections East has.
TfL fare scale is cheaper.
Station staffing higher.
More ticket gates. Not 100 per cent on LO but far higher than SE. Some SE stations are hard to do but not all.
TfL restored many post COVID cuts. Many on SE remain. There is scope to reintroduce many of the cut services eg Saturday is still 2tph on Vic to Orpington compared to previous 4tph. Bexleyheath line to Charing Cross has 1tph rather than two before cuts. Greenwich line has 2tph operated by Southeastern off peak compared to 4tph until recent reductions. There's more examples dotted about eg Sunday reductions on some lines.
Of course all that and more could be done by SE but under DaFT operation it isn't. Simply put, DaFT aren't interested in doing so.
Not to mention zero CHX services on the Woolwich line, DfT’s excuse was “you have the Elizabeth line” the EL has been a game changer, but it’s not perfect for every journey, if I want Southbank, I’d previously got a direct train to Waterloo East, something I can’t do on the EL.
Likewise for better access to the West End, again it’s a large area, and it isn’t just Oxford Street/Bond Street, if I want The National Gallery, Covent Garden or Leicester Square cinemas, Charing Cross was my choice of station over the EL
Now since the CHX have been axed the EL to/from Abbey Wood is rammed, before the Dec 2022 change it was fairly split
