True - what I was referring to was the ridicule heaped on anyone’s head at the time of Western or Deltic mania who had the temerity to suggest that in time people would mourn the passing of the Flying Banana. OK - their passing is unlikely to be accompanied by quite such a frenzy - but marked and mourned it certainly will be.

Yes 13th December is timetable change date.

However for the first week of December the line is closed from Truro to Penzance, and engineering works webpage suggests some trains won't operate Plymouth to Truro either.

What isn't clear is if HSTs will work the shortened services during the works, and if they don't, will they be brought back for a week ahead of 175s taking over. The diagrams are fairly self contained so easy to substitute

Thanks for the info. I am going down in a couple of weeks for my swansong on them but I do have an annual leave day lingering for this year and I was wondering whether a 24 hour jaunt down in December might be on the cards. Probably not with all this going on but I will keep an eye on things and see how it plays out

It's unfortunate that December 13th looks to be the end for GWR HSTs. I am glad I took the opportunity to have one last go on them back in July, and it was enjoyable going from Plymouth to Penzance, as they were comfortable and the interiors still looked great. Meanwhile, the IET back was the complete opposite.

It's a shame, they would be less than a month from the 50th Anniversary year of their introduction. I am surprised more isn't being made of this GWR, I know they more or less said goodbye to them in 2019 for the majority of the network but even some charters with the remaining stock for charity would be popular with enthusiasts.

Still, when the time comes for the Scotrail ones, hopefully they will get a decent swansong, perhaps with there being more enthusiasts and awareness these days it could look like something out of the '15 Guinea special for steam' goodbye wise with the amount of enthusiasts that would come out to see it. If Auld Lang Syne is played with a decent horn salute and thrash, I would be happy, albeit I sound rather too sentimental about it .

Now that you mention it, I do remember there was supposed to be an HST run to Paddington, as I was concerned that it was the Vintage trains service last Saturday (November 1st). It's a shame that it couldn't be rescheduled for a later date.

It did as it turns out make a return to service but, has low tyres and will be racking down those miles till its next exam quite rapidly.

Au contraire, I think there is a certain je ne sais quoi about photographs of trains in the dark.

I already have a ticket booked for travel on 2P30, and I intend to keep that as the rest of my plans for the day rely on me being back in Plymouth for a connection to Tiverton!
