University of Birmingham would also fit better as that's the name of the institution. (I went to the University of York, regularly referred to as York Uni including by it's own SU, which occasionally caused confusion with an actual York University in Canada).
I thought of this based on my own 'Uni of X', but then thought that for students and visitors (often not familiar with UK travel or geography) it would be clearer to start it with Birmingham. I acknowledge the inconsistency with the institution though.

The "-ic" suffix can't be used for a noun (it means "related to" or "of", e.g. "Masonic" means "related to or of the Freemasons"), so it'll forever sound ridiculous*. It needs to be the Baltic something, or "Baltic Liverpool" if they absolutely have to have the name of the city in it.
In a railway context, steam locos have been known as "Atlantics" and "Pacifics" for generations without anyone objecting.

I've done a little googling and there are several towns/villages in the US called Baltic.

Also the Baltic in Gateshead

That's what most people call it anyway, its station code is even SAC and it appears on the Worldline CIS as St Albans City. Just not *quite* everywhere.

This isn’t quite true. People in St Albans say “City station” and “Abbey station”, generally no one says the full name. I think city is now officially “St Albans City”, this quietly seems to have slipped in a few years ago. Back in the 90s when I used it regularly, it was officially “St Albans”, and this is what systems showed.

What about...

Pollokshields East becomes Polloksheilds
Pollokshields West becomes Strathbungo
Pollokshaws East becomes Newlands
Pollokshaws West becomes Pollokshaws

Would this make things clearer or more confusing?
I came here to write exactly these suggestions. These station names are currently completely wrong and odd.

In Glasgow I would also change:

-Maryhill to Maryhill Park (it is on the very edge of Maryhill)
-Kelvindale to Dawsholm
-Hillfoot to Boclair

And although it would be ludicrous to do it now, part of me wonders whether St. James’ Park tube station should not be “Westminster” and Westminster should not be “Parliament”. Likewise Southwark should be “Bankside”.

I don’t particularly like Worcestershire Parkway. Worcester Parkway would make more sense. And I would prefer East Midlands Airport (Parkway) - instead of East Midlands Parkway but it needs a regular bus link to the airport.

Given Oxford now has a Parkway. The central station could do with a suffix Central. Especially if the new stations on the Cowley Branch have Oxford prefixes. Perhaps Edenbridge to Edenbridge North in The North Downs.

Also could the use of ‘for’ be more widely and officially used. I think Ashchurch for Tewkesbury is shown on maps but Audley End for Saffron Walden and Pokesdown for Boscombe aren’t.

Other possibles could be Meldreth for Melbourn, Radley for Abingdon, Campsea Ashe for Wickham Market, Rye House for Hoddesdon.
“Parkway” is simply an odd, discordant term. If the station is intended as a park-and-ride, just call it “Oxford Park and Ride”. In the Worcestershire case it should be called “Worcestershire Interchange” or “Norton Junction” a la Dovey Junction.

Wanborough should really be Christmaspie as that's where it is. Not really worth the bother of renaming though.

Upper Warlingham should really be Whyteleafe East as it's in Whyteleafe and over a mile from Warlingham, and substantially lower not higher. (The name is a historical abberation that has never been corrected.) Also would avoid confusion with Woldingham, the next station along.

But I'd definitely rename Edenbridge to avoid the confusion with Edenbridge Town. (Edenbridge North or Upper maybe, it's over a mile from the town centre.) It's confusing to non-locals. Locals generally call it the Top Station, referring to its location and certainly not its quality!

  • Just adding suffix at least avoids needing to change the CRS code.
Why would you need to change the CRS code?

HPQ, WCX, HHB, BDM all exist and refer to old station names.

SAC & SAA are so different in size and service that many locals rarely use the Abbey, even where I live, to the west of SAA.Train journeys here are mainly to central London, and via Watford is both slower overall and more expensive. Even a trip to MK is (regrettably) usually by road.

Heighington should be Aycliffe Industrial Estate, as that is where it is.

Hence why "Baltic Triangle" would have been the right name for it, not using an adjective as a noun.
Baltic isn't an adjective, Balt isn't a word. It just a coincidence that it is spelt the same way as some adjective endings

Balt is a word: it means an inhabitant of Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania, or a speaker of their languages. (Ignore that Estonian comes from a completely different family of languages.) It does seem as though Balt derives from Baltic (Sea), rather than the other way around.

That will teach me to Google things before making definitive statements

If/When it ever opens, White Rose should be either "White Rose Business Park" or "Churwell & Cottingley". Simply calling it "White Rose" gives the impression of a working title they forgot to update.

Upwey to Broadwey (the latter is a larger dwelling much closer to the station than Upwey village)

Change Hayes (Kent) to Hayes Gardens. It also has the benefit of making my local line into the 'Garden Line' which seems much nicer than 'Mid-Kent'.

Change New Beckenham to Cator Park. It's nowhere near Beckenham proper.

Ladywell becomes Ladywell Fields.
People are going to be disappointed turning up to Hayes Gardens and expecting something like Kew Gardens and instead finding an Iceland and a few charity shops

Tiverton Parkway to Sampford Peverell for Tiverton.
The problem with this one is Tiverton Parkway has a very broad catchment area to whom Parkway is more suitable. It's also a common RRB departure point when the line between Exeter and Plymouth is shut, simply as the M5 proximity gets buses underway very quickly compared to downtown Exeter.

Wasn't Midgham renamed from Woolhampton, following confusion with Wolverhampton?

Gospel Oak id not at Hampstead Heath, it is at Parliament Hill Fields.
Ermmm no, it’s not. Parliament Hill Fields is where the 88 bus terminates, at the roundabout, a bit further up Highgate Road. Hampstead Heath is the name of the park that is right next to the railway at Gospel Oak. I am local to this area and I can assure you that Gospel Oak is not at Parliament Hill Fields.

Ahhhh okay, this makes sense. It’s just that having ‘Tiverton’ as the first word leads to the thought that it’s in Tiverton!

"Road" or "Parkway" as a suffix has historically been used to indicate that a station is near to, but not in the named place.

Possibly true, but surely Wolverton should also have been renamed? Much more potential for confusion since they are both on the WCML (or branches of).

Wolverton appears to be situated in between Wolverton and New Bradwell.

I think it was in the days of the GWR, so Wolverton wouldn't have been their problem.
I guess the LNW/LMS didn't have any such troubles.

Wolverton had a station before Wolverhampton, so perhaps the station in the Black Country ought to change its name?

Although the new board apparently has reverted:
9ed99b65-1eb2-49b5-aa73-9e827f474892

[Image showing new departure board at Norwich showing 'Liverpool Lime St' and 'London Liverpool St' from Greater Anglia Press release: Link:https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/abo...eils-new-integrated-train-and-bus-information]

Although I agree it can and should be overridden to show 'London Liv. St' and 'Lime St, Liverpool' if they're not going to rename London Liverpool Street (which would cost millions to update everything and fixes a comparatively small problem).
To be honest - why not just show the destinations at Norwich as Liverpool and London - it’s not as if there are direct trains to any other stations in those places.

In general, the most confusing thing you can do to a station is rename it!

Take a look at an Ordnance Survey Map. All of the area north of the lido and the athletics track, and west of Highgate Ponds, is Parliament Hill Fields.

Hampstead Heath is further north west, near Kenwood House and Spaniards Inn.

Highgate Harriers’ Athletics Track and the open space around it is used for various cross country races and is known as Parliament Hill.

Hampstead Heath station is well named. Any change would need to be addressing a significant issue to be worth the cost and potential confusion.
