Why not canvas curtains, which wouldnt take long to raise or lower?

They'd have to be strong enough at 100mph to withstand pressure differentials in a tunnel passing a train in the opposite direction at 125mph and not become hopelessly wrapped around the knitting. You might as well use a container.

You would have to have a structure on the wagon to put the curtains on. What do you then do with them when you need to put a container on?

Just seen that a 99 Will be at the Polmadie open day. When might it be travelling up - can't make the Open Day, but was hoping might be able to see it going on the Saturday

The whole issue has been researched, and yes whilst `canvas` would have an issue, using a moveable wall between the ends of the flats , minimising exposure would work (as outlined in that pdf).
I still maintain that a train presenting air gaps, therefore more wind resistance, will weigh less than the equivalent train fully loaded, presenting no air gaps.

In my mind, one cancels the other out.

For power, perhaps, but elimination of the gaps is not about aero on the train, it is about the aero affect off the train, eg passengers at stations, platform canopies, brickwork in tunnels, etc.

The sugegstion though was that empty boxes (which don't weigh much) should be used to reduce the gaps. Streamlining between the wagons would probably be going too far (it's not been done, even for passenger trains, since the 1930s.

I think the whole concept of 100mph intermodal trains sounds wonderful on a press release, or discussed in a boardroom meeting, but the realities of it are that it’s overly expensive and unnecessary.

The last ‘high speed’ operation I can think of in recent years was the Froid Combi overnight trains between Avignon (southern France) and Paris Valenton and Dourges (northern France) conveying fresh produce at speeds of up to 140km/h, although something in the back of my mind tells me they initially aimed for 160km/h.

These trains haven’t operated at 140 for a long while, instead operating at 120km/h as per the vast majority of other European intermodal operations. The added expense of increased maintenance requirements for wagons operating at 90mph, instead of 75mph, versus the marginal time and pathing benefits, simply didn’t add up. If the French can’t make it work on a 600 mile slog the length of France, what hope do we have of half the distance?

Edit:
I should add, a large proportion of Froid Combi’s previous fleet (they’ve recently taken on a large number of new wagons) were CT and UK gauge-friendly container wagons. They’re still in existence, I don’t know of any reason they couldn’t be returned to 90mph operation, so the excuse of ‘we’d do it but we don’t have any wagons available’ simply isn’t true.

APT-E had streamlined inter-carriage fairings.
The articulated car carriers used between Cowley (Oxon) and Southampton Eastern Docks, have fairings between wagons within the 5-wagon sets.

Polmadie open Day has been changed to Saturday 11/Sunday 12 October from September.

However tickets are only available to passengers arriving on a charter train.

There’s an existing thread here for the Polmadie event.

After staying at Leicester a while, more new ground for a 99 is expected to be covered on Tuesday. Heads up for anyone local to Spalding, Lincoln Central, Saxilby and Doncaster Roberts Road depot.

After working 0Q99 Leicester - Peterborough, a 99 should then work the following:

6Q86 11:56 Peterborough North Yard - Doncaster Down Decoy 14:21:

0Q85 15:08 Doncaster Down Decoy - Doncaster Roberts Road 15:18:

Seen quite a few clips of today's loaded diesel test runs. The first clip in the below video (not mime, to be clear) seems to show the loco in what might be full power. The loco is definitely making quite the racket and it doesn't sound like the coolant fans:

2 quick questions and some gen.

1. Does anyone know if 99001 actually went around to Doncaster Roberts Road or whether it's remained in Doncaster Down Decoy?
2. Does anyone know if 99001 is still at Doncaster Roberts Road currently?

And now for the gen - heads up to anyone local to Doncaster station, Hatfield & Stainforth or Scunthorpe. 99001 heads your way for the 1st time tomorrow evening on 6Q90!

6Q90 Doncaster Down Decoy - Barnetby Down Reception:

6Q91 Barnetby Down Reception - Barnetby Down Reception (via Scunthorpe):

6Q93 Barnetby Down Reception - Barnetby Down Reception (via Scunthorpe):

6Q95 Barnetby Down Reception - Barnetby Down Reception (via Scunthorpe):

0O96 Barnetby Down Reception - Doncaster Roberts Road:

Cheers Bertie. Do you, or anyone else, know if 99001 worked this 0Q97 working solo or if it was dragged?

0Q97 Doncaster - Peterborough:

After working this above (alone or being dragged?) 99001 then worked 0Q97 Peterborough - Leicester to return home.

It was 99001 on its own.

Thanks @FrodshamJnct - wanted to complete my records and didn't know if it was alone or dragged so thank you.

Gen time then! Heads up to anyone on the MML south of Leicester, the GWML between Acton Main Line and Bristol Parkway and Severn Tunnel Jn or Newport.

On Tuesday evening, a 99 is scheduled to go from Leicester to Wellingborough yard in daylight.

0Q45 Leicester - Wellingborough:

And then, late on Tuesday/in the early hours of Wednesday, 4Q45 Wellingborough - Cardiff Pengam via the route above:

No obvious onward path from Cardiff Pengam yet. I'll keep an eye out and post here unless someone beats me to it.

Could that be in electric mode from, say, Acton?

Even if this is (just) a trial, how much electric-hauled freight, if any, has the GMWL seen up to now?

It's timed as diesel throughout, trailing 1000t from the start, but does have a 2 minute stop at Slough with a drop in the trailing load to 400t which would give a zippier runtime, so possibly (just possibly) it may change at a stand in Slough. The stop at Acton is on the Goods lines, which I don't think are live yet so if they panned up between Acton and Slough the schedule indicates it would be on the move.

None, or at least not enough to be statistically significant. In order to run electric it'd need to be running between within the limits of Cardiff Central and Paddington, and using a Bi-Mode for last mile or using one of the very few electrified yards.

Looks like it'll go from Pengam to Cardiff Canton light loco after arrival in the early hours of Wednesday on 0Q45 Pengam Reception Sdgs Gbrf to Cardiff Canton Sdgs Gbrf:
Then back to Pengam on Wednesday afternoon on 0Q48:
Then pulling a train back to Wellingborough on 4Q48:

I think the only electric locos under power on the GWML have been the 87 on a GBRf multi day tour and the 93 recently. Plus they loadbank tested the Heathrow tunnels with 90s at construction. But that might be another thread. In answer to the question...none?

Presume that will need diesel to get out of Pengam onto the main line, then electric all the way to Acton, diesel over the London lines then electric to Wellingborough, then diesel into the sidings.
Be interesting to see how that performs including waltzing up Sharnbrook as though there is no hill to climb !!

The future of railfreight is here
