Haymarket to Dalmeny electrification

Maybe there will be a new Thorton Yard BEMU depot for the battery-fitted tranche, Cadder will be upgraded to service and stable 222s and Haymarket gets sold for housing. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, ScotRail will be stuck with the cramped accommodation at Haymarket until the heat death of the universe.

I’ve always felt there should have been better coordination from the start between ScotRail / Hitachi and LNER regarding depots and fleets in Scotland. Haymarket has gone from being a loco depot to a DMU depot to one that now also handles HSTs. Craigentinny has for years been a Loco and High Speed Train depot now largely handling EMUs for Hitachi with an overspill stabling facility at Millerhill. I’d have worked with all of them to keep the DMUs at Haymarket, HSTs (Caley Sleeper & XC stabling) at Craigentinny and have a new Hitachi depot for LNER & ScotRail in Millerhill.

As for developing Haymarket, that would be quite difficult given that it’s sandwiched between the main lines and Tram. You could divert the tram but that’s all theoretical.

Cadder & Eastfield depots should be for HSTs & 385s, Millerhill & Craigentinny for Hitatch stock (385s and 80xs) and Haymarket depot for 170s & 158s for now. I highly doubt any sort of depot will be built near Thornton, and the closest thing to a depot is Dundee carriage sidings.

Where will the BEMUs be serviced when they enter the fleet?

Today's observation is that work to remove the overbridge at South Gyle is underway - the machine arm on the bridge in the picture was doing some work when I passed through earlier

Seems that work is really starting to take shape on the bridges being remodelled! Another one just further down the line is undergoing the same story at the moment.

The A8 road bridge next to Edinburgh Gateway is to be raised in the next couple of weeks, for a work period of just over month or so. I don't want to know what traffic will be like on it...

Will servicing be included though? SR may want to protect jobs by keeping it in house.
I’m guessing this will become apparent when the ITT is published. If it is a supply and maintenance package this will lead to a loss of work at Scotrail’s maintenance depots which will not be popular.

EMUs and BEMUs require less maintenance than DMUs which would reduce headcount long term unless the fleet size (vehicle and units) goes up.
Scotrail also tends to do more activities in house for fleets it maintains compared to most TOCs so the direct headcount tend to be comparably higher.
Similarly 222s will need less than the HST fleet.

I've got a feeling that there's a decent population of long beards among the maintenance staff, so natural attrition can take care of that.

Small milestone for the project.

The first bridge modification on the line has been completed! This bridge is the A8 road next to Edinburgh Gateway, and finished work yesterday on the 30th of September (according to roadworksscotland.org).

Just a question about project staging.
Is it most likely that the wiring of the line will only commence once all of the bridges and lineside equipment has been demolished/rebuilt or modified?

Not an expert by any measure, but it would make sense to do it that way since it's unlikely that structures will align with cable run ends so the catenary wire will have to run under the bridges.

Spoke to an operator at Lennymuir today and he was saying that over the Christmas period that wires will go in starting from Haymaret. Delays at the moment are due to the RHTT being out thus preventing overnight possessions.

It occurred to me from the tram to the airport the other day that betweem Haymarket East and Haymarket Central Jn you can see three different generations of OHLE. Wonder if that occurs elsewhere in such close proximity.

Yes, that does make sense. Especially with the four bridges being demolished and rebuilt (complete by May next year) along the route.

Wow, that's great to hear! Even if the wires won't be live, it'll still be very nice to see the masts and droppers in correct orientation. (Which to be fair, the wires will be as useful right now as they will when they're switched on, since only LNER will use them...)

I'm not sure if London St Pancras + London Kings Cross would have multiple generations of OHLE. Considering the ECML having both the old OHLE, the newer series 2 OHLE from the Gasworks Tunnel remodel, HS1's overheads, and the St. Pancras to Bedford OHLE. I'm not sure if the ECML and MML OHLE are the same, but if not that would be cool.

The ECML originally had MkIIIA OLE (since upgraded to Series 2/UKMS from Kings X to Belle Isle/Copenhagen Tunnel), while the MML used MkIIIB. Parts of the MML were of course reworked when St Pancras "went international".

And MML has UKMS125 (is this the other name for Series 2?) north of Bedford.

The 1970s parts of the ECML (KGX to Hitchin and Hertford Loop) seem to be an earlier design than that used for the rest of the line. The Single Track Cantilevers look especially different.

Precisely - MkIIIA on the KGX - Hitchin/Royston & Hertford Loop; MkIIIB at all points north.

Highly likely (unless it is bridge parapet raising is the only outstanding item) - wiring especially of plain line is very quick in comparison to the rest of the work and the team normally sweeps though an area very quickly.
Return conductor wires will go in first followed by the catenary and contact wires.

The return wire seems to already be in in some sections of masts (and have been for a long time), but not all. It’s primarily visible on the airport section.

Some bridge demolitions are taking place until a decent bit into next year (around March - June time I think), so I’m not sure how that would affect it. The main demolitions are at South Gyle station and Ladywell Avenue just further down the line to the south east before the line merges with the E-G.

Was through South Gyle today, the current works ongoing with the bridge - it looks like they've started constructing the new abutments within the existing bridge structure as plenty of fresh concrete has been put down.

Interesting to see! I'm now wondering whether that bridge was the right height, but the curved shape was the reason it's being demolished.
