People in the talent pool, keep your hopes up. A lot of people come and go in Network Rail, whether it be to different disciplines, depots or straight up leave. Our depot has just taken on 3 lads. All barely any railway experience (between 2 months and just over a year of contracting).
So many depots are understaffed, but management just don't get authorisation to hire new workers. Our depot has been complaining for over a year now, we've been running on the bare bones and it's been tough.

Is this for Network Rail, or a contractor? My assumption is the former. You’ll find your post has been merged into an existing thread; I hope this is helpful.

Hi there, I’m a current S&T tech. Coming in as an operative, from experience, you will be placed in a team, made familiar with the section you are covering. Shown the various pieces of equipment you will help maintain. The rest will be general lifting and shifting, getting the tools loaded and looking out for what’s needed for the job etc. You will then be sent on your SEM1 and then eventually SEM2 courses. These will give you the foundations for learning the S&T trade and then enable you to start building your competencies as those courses are a prerequisite for many others.

Hi. Recently had a few interviews - few months ago - and apart from the general "what do you know about this role" had 4 questions which were along the lines of;
1: Can you tell me about a time you took charge of a difficult situation
2: Can you tell me about a time you made a workplace safer and what actions you took to get there
3: What would you do if you witnessed a colleague making inappropriate comments/actions.
4: Network Rail is committed to a greener and cleaner railway, can you tell us how you would help accomplish this.
There was a group practical where - in teams of 6 - we had to make a bridge out of paper, tape, etc. that would hold a toy train and had to be within certain height and length limits. That was at Manchester Square One.
I've also had to do a practical assessment which was wiring a LED and a resitor to a circuit board and marking the resistance and +/- terminals and the voltage. But I suspect that might be more related to the Signalling Maintenance role.
What I will say is that everyone involved at NWR in the recruitment process were extremely helpful, really felt like they wanted me to succeed, and always open to questions no matter what they were.
Regarding the Medical - I've yet to have had mine for NWR but I've had one for a private rail company before, and it's really nothing to stress about. You do a few questions e.g. do you take medication, do you have D&A problems, have you been sectioned before etc.
Then a height and weight check, blood pressure, hearing test, eyesight test (like the opticians, read letters on a board), lung test (blow into a tube), colour blind test, and then a brethalyser and then wee into a cup.
Just make sure you don't flush the toilet as I know someone who flushed on instinct and had to wait for another wee to come so was sat in the centre for another 30 or so minutes drinking water!

hi , i start my s&t L3 enginerring in london this nov similar to forrest. i wanted to know how does the residential work post coventry being sold, is there a different process for people who live in london . possibly more hybrid work format? thank you in advance!
If you mean hybrid by working some days from home then nope, if you’re on the tools, it’s workplace every shift unless you’re on a course.
Unless it’s different down south than up here in Scotland, apprentices now are counted towards team numbers. I’d imagine its initial training then put into a team and learn on the job with some courses peppered throughout the year.
Hi mate. I was asked a lot of questions to be honest. The same questions As said above by forest. I was asked about life saving rules the safety vision how the company works etc. It was mostly about how you deal with situations regarding safety, working with others improving yourself and others. How you work etc. It was fairly relaxed but they are looking for specifics answers to certain questions. Have you had the interview yet? You want get a medical/drug and alcohol test until you are successful. I didn’t do any group work or practical in my interview. Was face to face interview with a section manager and section planner. I still have some of the notes I wrote down. If you need any other info then private message if you need any help. I would be happy to do so. Cheers

Hi mate I didn’t get a medical until after I was successful.so if you are successful then this will all be sorted after that I did a lot of research about how the company works the life saving rules and the safety vision. I think I started about 6 weeks after being told I was successful. Have you received a date for interview?

Have had my medical today, finished in about 90 mins. Pretty full on to be honest!
Thankfully D&A is instant results unlike my last one which had to be sent away to lab.
Hopefully this speeds up my start date as I have had Medical Cert sign-off sent to HR already!

hiya, i had my medical booked for much later, is this because we’re doing different technitian roles?
Might just be your location mate. I booked mine for asap beginning of July! So it was about a month wait.
Where you will be based from will probably have some deciding factors too. My medical was at Crewe.
It was very extensive, bring your good lungs and ears.

The NR medical is a very good health check - I don't think you'd get better paying privately. It's also age dependent being every 10 years up to the age of 60 and every 2 years after that so its also a way to monitor your health / fitness and may even reveal any underlying conditions as time goes on. Look after yourself mind and enjoy a great career as I did.

Could you be a bit more specific with what sort of "guidance" you are looking for?

Without knowing the details or indeed your background, as a guidance Network Rail interviews tend to follow the STAR process Situation, Task, Action, Result.
I would suspect there would be a couple of technical questions on the asset.
Do some research also on the life saving rules, and close calls process - and try to drop at a suitable point
Take a bottle of water/accept an offer of water - any doubt at a question, sip the water to give you extra thinking time and plan your response
For a number of reasons, the recruitment process is not quick as slick as it perhaps should be, don't panic too much if there is no update.

I have applied for various Operative positions and never get an invite for an interview. It goes to the Hiring Manager and is unsuccesful. Beginning to think it is an age thing as I am 54yrs. It's frustrating when I served in HM Forces and am physically fit and my current job at Royal Mail I am walking on average 12 miles a day. Looks like I'll have to look elsewhere.

There’s training centres all around the UK there might be one local to you.
Afaik (don't quote me) NWR will pay for everything from train tickets to digs if you have to travel far.
At our depot our closest training centres is ~45 mins away so we either get daily train tickets or they let us take a van.

i have gotten in touch with someone at nr explaining the actual time doing ur training . they replied ill "be doing training away for weeks at a time which is fine, but certainly not 20 weeks "consecutively. i wanted to know as someone who may know of have done the training . did people at westwood or hms sultan literally stay at the venues for 20 weeks recurring or would it be similar to what may go ahead for this years enrollment.
An update date sadly I didn't get through this time but got very good feedback to work on from the hiring manager so I will be applying again for positions that suits my interest
