BBC reporting planned engineering works to renew Dartford Jct, where the North Kent line and Dartford Loop Line meet/diverge, over February half term, with preparatory work the weekend before and follow-up work on two later dates:

Rail passengers are being warned of major engineering works in the Dartford area, which will see some rail lines closed for nine consecutive days.

Network Rail said an investment of £10m is being made at Dartford Junction, one of the busiest points of the railway in Kent, to improve reliability and punctuality.

The closure is scheduled for the February 2026 school half-term, beginning on Saturday, 14 February.

Network Rail said: "The £10m investment in new track at Dartford will help give the tens of thousands of passengers travelling over the junction each day more punctual journeys."

Buses will replace trains between Gravesend, Dartford, Slade Green, Barnehurst and Crayford 14-22 February, Network Rail said.

There will also be preparation work on 8 and 9 February, plus follow-up work on 1 March and 5 April.

It said this approach allows it to consolidate activity, as opposed to up 30 weekends of disruption using weekend only access.

The work will include the renewal of switches and points, new tracks and power supply installations, and platform adjustment at Dartford.

Southeastern and Thameslink services will be affected, with all routes through Dartford subject to change.

Will it have the same point setup as before? Also, anyone know what the platform adjustment planned at Dartford station is?

Unlikely to be an enhancement in the current spending climate. Like for Like I'd say.

I'm not expecting any speed enhancement, 30-40mph through there is already fairly good (though I think through Dartford station could do with being raised to that speed). I was thinking more if they simplify the point work.

If NR can, they'll want to remove the switched diamond for a conventional crossover and turnout, but to do that will require moving the parallel crossover away from London, which also then requires moving the left-handed crossovers back, so would be a big job. However if they do it they replace the 5 point ends with awkward geometry and access for 3 point ends with a much simpler setup.

NR may also be looking to remove the interlaced point at the country end, given the facing crossover from the Up main to the down side is replicated further out. But that would likely have too big an impact of station movements so I think it's unlikely to happen. Don't know for sure though!

The platform adjustment is likely to be relatively small, probably smoothing something out. It'd take bridge replacement to do anything substantive like widening, which I imagine isn't going to be affordable for a £10m budget given how complex it would be.

Dartford blockade update

Details are now on RTT. Trains will run to Crayford/Barnehurst/Slade Green then continue in service to one of the above then run according to the current timetable to London. Most passengers won't be able to tell there's a difference.
Bexleyheath line still won't have their 2 tph to Charing X unless that's changed before Feb 26 and Sidcup sidings go unused (no trains terminating at sidcup)

A couple of "fast services" anomalies not entirely sure why
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:J54657/2026-02-18/detailed - this service in the current timetable is one of 2 extra services than run during peak hours via Bexleyheath to Gravesend and Rochester. The Rochester service then runs ECS to Slade Green Depot. It does this fast run similar to what the final trains from Hayes do (because hayes is unstaffed and there's no one to lock the trains - Services will run to Lewisham to be emptied then to Grove Pk depot) to Cannon Street then run back to Slade Green depot (waste of mileage much?) Perhaps trains can't be emptied at Slade Green at that time or be reversed into the depot as that will block the line for too long. Note that at this time the peak hour sidcup rounders are also running.
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:J54577/2026-02-18/detailed - this service usually originates from Grove Park Depot and runs in service as a "part rounder" from New Cross (instead of Cannon St) via Bexleyheath, but instead of doing its' normal course to London it will go to Crayford
Looks like any incident on any of the Dartford lines will affect each other

Looks fairly good for what's involved - given how close the Crayford Spur is to the possession site, they will definitely be creating extra power sections to allow trains to get that close without making the Dartford Jct area accidentally live. For such a long possession Crayford Spur does need to be active, not just to allow a decent Sidcup line service, but access to/from Slade Green Depot (and to a lesser extent anything that moves between there and Grove Park) would be very restricted if nothing could run beyond Crayford.

I'm anxious that any sort of minor disruption on any of the Dartford lines can easily cross over and affect each other

Bexleyheath looks to have 2tph to Charing X in both directions throughout the day including on the Saturday.

During peak times reversing at Slade Green will be very awkward. As well as the unit being locked up, the driver would need to change ends (or another driver), plus traverse at slow speeds the route back into the depot and then have junction margin available for the next one. That service has 5 minutes until the next one arrives which won't be near enough. Thameslink are using Plumstead sidings which doesn't need a reversal on the mainline but still looks tight at peak times.

The Greenwich Bexleyheath rounders run in one direction and are split to Crayford in the other. With a repeating half hour off peak pattern, mathematically one of the three Bexleyheath line destinations at the Dartford end must either come from Woolwich but go to Sidcup or come from Sidcup but go to Woolwich. With all the other constraints the planners might not have had much choice over which destination got that result.

Overall it looks like Southeastern have gone to a lot of effort to run as many trains as possible. Off peak there is a fair amount of recovery time at the Dartford end so smaller delays could be recovered. The nature of the possession means any infrastructure/train faults on the Dartford lines will be much more disruptive.

You're correct. Not sure why I thought otherwsie. Looks like the 2tph all day is being restored from the upcoming timetable.

Yes, southbound "rounders" via Bexleyheath won't run back to Woolwich or Greenwich anymore and will run to Crayford. But 2Ps (from London to Slade Green via Greenwich) will still run as you say

Between the peaks and on Saturdays will remain 1tph, though they are adding some extra evening services to extend the 2tph duration.

Yes that's the case for the normal timetable. During the blockade it's 2tph throughout the day and also on Saturday, it being tricky to run 1tph when everything else is 2tph.

Photos of the original layout (about 1970) and the layout as for the Dartford power box resignalling. A piece of history trivia is that Dartford Junction was one of the last boxes to retain its SE&CR pattern enamelled sign - "DARTFORD JUNCTION SIGNALS". I wonder if it was saved after the box was demolished?

Having now seen the above pictures and looked at the site today on Google Earth, getting rid of that diamond would be very beneficial. There appears to be room to move all the other crossovers eastward and keeping the signal gantry protecting the junction for London-bound trains where it is. However, this could mean altering speed limits downwards for TPWS reasons (although given the proximity to Dartford station, no train will be much above 20mph by this gantry). I doubt they could relocate the signal gantry as the chance of a train waiting at a red signal there and fouling the crossovers next to the station are higher.

The only other option while removing the diamond is to just plain line it with no replacement crossover, but limiting Up North Kent trains to just the Centre and Down lines will be poor for resilience.

The winners here are the people of Barnehust, Slade Green and Crayford who have extra services

The Hayes Line is also affected losing some peak hours but this could’ve been avoided

Considering the way Thameslink services usually get treated during engineering works, keeping the two trains per hour to Plumstead is also a minor win.

100% - I wonder if Gillingham drivers will be taxing to Plumstead or whether these services will be ran by the drivers north of the river completely. And there's only the hourly GRV-RAInham on the other side but that's better than nothing.

I suspect Crayford, Barnehurst, Slade Green and Ebbsfleet will see a notable surge in parking and drop-off/pickups during this period, which will be quicker/easier than RRBs. Dartford passengers will probably drive to one of the first three, particularly for those going to the Lizzy, while Stone Crossing and Greenhithe users could easily use the B255 and A2 to get to Ebbsfleet. Swanscombe and Northfleet are practically on top of Ebbsfleet anyway and see relatively few passengers as a result.

For Ebbsfleet this won't be a problem as there's ample parking and well-designed road infrastructure, however the other 3 could well see some notable congestion on the roads feeding into them.

Don't forget this was strategically chosen to be during half-term. The supposed increase in congestion is offset by no school traffic.

Abbey Wood might be used more than any of the first three.

In the peaks certainly, but daytime/weekend traffic maybe busier than normal (though maybe not as busy as a peak rush) for the equivalent times, given half term could increase leisure travel into London.

And the 20%+ drop in commuting thst happens at half term.
I wonder if Alpine ski resorts will have a disproportionately high number of tourists from Dartford that week ;)

No the 2tph all day is just for the blockade to allow for interworking between other services which operate 2tph, 1tph to charing cross off peak will still be operating in a normal timetable

With Thameslink terminating at Gravesend from the Medway towns, something I wondered is have there ever been considerations to allow trains to Northfleet, then run into Swanscombe wrong-sided? No new pointwork would be needed and his would allow Northfleet and Swanscombe to be served, plus avoid blocking up a through platform at Gravesend when HS1 services are running. To make it work the up signal at Northfleet would need modifying to allow such a move (if not already the case), then a fixed red/shunt limit signal at Swanscombe.

This wouldn't be possible for the upcoming closure of course, but Dartford closures for engineering works are not uncommon anyway.

Given a Fixed red exists at Northfleet for the equivalent move in the opposite direction, I suspect it was considered the last time the signalling was renewed or amended in the area.
No new pointwork would be needed and his would allow Northfleet and Swanscombe to be served, plus avoid blocking up a through platform at Gravesend when HS1 services are running.
What does this do for the runtimes, would the extra stops and distance break the turnround?
To make it work the up signal at Northfleet would need modifying to allow such a move (if not already the case), then a fixed red/shunt limit signal at Swanscombe.
The Up signal at Northfleet would need the route adding. This signal is close to the crossover so will require an additional overlap for the new route as well as the approach control for the 20mph pointwork. To run the move in passenger service will require a main aspect signal, which means fitting TPWS for the approach and a full overlap. NK421 is quite far from the platform so this shouldn't be an issue, but worth considering as another risk.

Another thing to consider is the reasonable distance from Swanscombe Platform 2 to NK423 (the signal between Swanscombe and Northfleet), which for a terminating train is potentially more of an issue than for a through train as the driver will not have had a preceding aspect. The signal may be visible from the platform, or it may need just a warning sign to remind drivers to approach with care, rather than anything more significant like a repeater/off indicator.

It would certainly be doable, but it's not the most straightforward of signalling jobs.

Background information:

Network Rail will be carrying out a critical upgrade at Dartford Junction, one of the busiest rail junctions in Kent and the country. The £10 million investment in new track at Dartford will help give the tens of thousands of passengers travelling over the junction each day more punctual journeys.

The works taking place include:

  • Renewal of 10 switches and crossings – the movable sections of track that allow trains to change direction
  • Installation of 400 yards of new rail, and conductor rails which power trains, between Slade Green and Dartford
  • Platform adjustment work at Dartford station to reduce the stepping distance between platforms and trains, improving safety and passenger experience
More details on this major programme of works is available on the Network Rail website.

The platform adjustment described appears to be raising the height to reduce the stepping distance.

The passenger who only partially understands the destinations on circular services is going to cry during these works. I've always thought that they should be marketed as going to the first stop on the next line, rather than just Slade Green every time. Ie, A train from Cannon St going via Greenwich & Sidcup should display "Crayford via Greenwich", as opposed to always using Slade Green like is currently done. No issue when going via Bexleyheath/Sidcup obviously.

Trains from London Cannon Street to Slade Green via Bexleyheath will run from London Cannon Street to Crayford via Bexleyheath.
This is a bit confusing. They could have marketed this as "diverting after Barnehurst to Crayford". Note that most people don't care about what happens to the train after Barnehurst really

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

  1. Platform adjustment work at Dartford station to reduce the stepping distance between platforms and trains, improving safety and passenger experience
I've never noticed extraordinary gaps at this station. Does anyone have any information about this? Obviously all effort towards making the experience more accessible is welcomed, but there are definitely stations with dire need of platform adjusting if that's something that's on the table.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

With all of the inter-working, is there a chance of seeing some different stock being used? I'm aware there's one 376 running to/from Victoria at the moment though.

Also, has any thing like this happened in the past? I'm interested to see how disruption might affect the services.

In the current saturday timetable, there's 2 "circular" services from Cannon St to Slade Green (via Greenwich), but after Barnehurst they terminate and form a Charing Cross service. I would imagine this is to bring the service to/from Charing Cross up to 2tph in the Saturday evening when Charing Cross is much busier and where most journies are more likely to originate. This does result in an extended dwell time though as it waits to run to the normal timetable a CHX service would from Barnehurst. Anything similar seems to have been avoided.

At Crayford station there are now banners all over the platform fencing and entrances advertising this closure. I expect all other stations on the three lines will have them, especially Dartford and the other closed stations.

Is anyone able to explain where the 400m of new track is to be laid. Also, is it possible for a twelve car train to occupy any of the three berths between Dartford and Dartford Junction without fouling the points at either end? If no, what is the longest that can be accomodated?
