197010 197012 are not 'Cambrian' units. Is there a reason why these are stored at Holyhead at the moment?
Have they done much service? Possibly out with faults and it was easier to replace them with a couple of Cambrian units than repair straight away.

Havent seen 010 in service for ages not sure about 012. But they could be long term out of service as ive noticed some days 6 of the Cambrian units in service.

According to a search of this thread I did, 197010 entered service in something like December 2022 and 197012 did so in something like May 2023.
Yes we know they have been in service its more about the fact that recently they havent been?

I'd like to know why as much as you would, but I was responding to @Krokodil's question "have they done much service?" with the 2022 and 2023 entry-to-service dates I found for those two units, suggesting that yes, they likely have done much service in terms of 197s :) Apologies for any confusion.

No worries.

I assumed the question was asking have they done much recently.

Ah OK.

@Krokodil, did you mean recently?

197003 197010 197012 197026 197028 197029 197030 197031 197036 and 197037
Many thanks for that @Gordonman :) May I ask how you know though, given that you're based in West Yorkshire (if your "location" of Baildon is correct)? Have you just been to Holyhead to see the 197s in the sidings, or have you found out another way?

For @scottie:

The 10 2-car 197/0s currently in Holyhead sidings, according to @Gordanman, are 197003/010/012/026/028/029/030/031/036/037.

8 of these (197003/026/028/029/030/031/036/037) are ETCS-fitted; the other 2 (197010/012) are non-ETCS.

In terms of the 197s currently in Holyhead sidings that have and haven't been in service:

7 (197003/010/012/028/029/030/031) have been in service (5 ETCS-fitted "off-Cambrian" - 197003/028/029/030/031; 2 non-ETCS - 197010/012)

3 (197026/036/037) haven't yet been in service

=============================================

As for the 197s that are not currently in Holyhead sidings according to @Gordanman, by process of elimination:

60 have been in service (plus the 7 currently in Holyhead sidings that have = 67 total 197s have been in service). The 60 comprise:

28x non-ETCS 2-car 197/0s (197001+002, 197004-009, 197011, 197013-021, 197042-051)
6x ETCS-fitted 2-car 197/0s (197022/024/027/033/034/035)
All 12x 188-seat 3-car 197/1s (197101-112)
All 14x 174-seat 3-car 197/1s (197113-126)

As for the remaining 7 ETCS-fitted 2-car 197/0s (besides the aforementioned 70 197s of the 77):

4 have been delivered but haven't yet been in service (197023/025/032/038)

3 haven't yet been delivered (197039/040/041)

I think that's all correct, but any corrections are still welcome :)

I was wondering how much time in traffic they'd had compared to their peers, the answer to which would be found in the question "how long ago did they last turn a wheel in passenger service before being laid up?"

As far as I can see -

010 last worked Fri 15th Aug 2025

012 last worked in service on Wed 19th July, finishing at Crewe depot then moved from Crewe to Holyhead ECS Mon 21st July 2025.

A recent move for the former then, but the latter definitely looks like it's been shoved out of the way with a persistent fault or awaiting parts.

I would like to know why all those ‘spare’ 197’s are parked in sidings at Holyhead whilst 2 car trains rammed with passengers are running around the network? Some days, we even have 2 car 150’s on the Cheltenham run.

I also note that the 67’s with Mk4 coaches are still not delivering reliable service. Why don’t they have the ‘spare’ 197’s distributed around the network so that a 5 car Mk4 set can be replaced with a 5 car 197 should the need arise? (The replacement seems to be a 2 car 197 at present).

Where are you going to service and maintain the Cambrian 197s while Machynlleth remains full of 158s?

If they had got a move on with getting Machynlleth over to 197’s, they could have sent the now spare 158’s around the network as back ups. Surely, Cardiff Canton does know how to maintain 158’s and these could have been used on Maesteg to Ebbw Vale as 3 car units as well as the Cheltenham run. That would have freed up 197’s for the long distance runs up The Marches as 5 car trains.

Of course, much of the current problems lie with the fact that the 398’s are just sitting in the Taff's Well depot. They have not even started to run Pontypridd to Cardiff Bay.

Does anyone know how come 197045 has been at Carmarthen for over a week now?
I'd like to know this too. Assuming that's the 197 that's in the distant whatever-it's-called thing there? (My terminology knowledge isn't the best)

It's not just about which depots "know how" to maintain which units, it's about having the capacity and resource - physical facilities, time and manpower - to maintain those extra trains. So even if the Cambrian 197s were running from Machynlleth they wouldn't necessarily have anywhere with the capacity to maintain the 158s

I've noticed that with the units that have the "standard premium" area on formation diagrams this is showing as first class despite it now being permanently declassified due to the accessibility issues discussed in this thread and elsewhere. I wonder why this hasn't been fixed?

On the station CIS. Certainly in some locations, last time I saw (but sadly didn't think to photograph) it was Manchester Piccadilly I think.
Oh right. Have you contacted Transport for Wales Rail and/or Network Rail about this? I'm not sure how it's handled at stations managed by a different company than the operator of the train.

As far as I know yes, It’s believed to be at where the track machines parks
