This is likely due to the lack of end doors.
The 745 has a benefit, in that there are no tapered carriage ends, while the 80x does. Some of the tapered carriage ends are used usefully (e.g., toilets), but quite a bit of it isn't (I'm including the bike racks in this because they're difficult to use even for reasonably fit 20-somethings with a standard bike, and utterly useless for anyone outside that category).That's comparing two observed layouts specified for two different operational environments. It's apples and oranges.
You are going to have to show your workings metre by metre. Take off all the unusable train lengths - e.g. end of the nose to first metre of useful passenger compartment (in the IET's case it's the cab, in the 745 it's cab plus traction equipment behind), then additional traction equipment space (745 has traction equipment in the 6th and 7th coaches, the 801 may have equipment cabins in the vestibule ends). Then assume same number of toilets and same aggregate door width. This can all be worked out exactly - no 'opinion' required.
Otherwise all you are saying is they didn't specify a kitchen in the 745 that buys you more seats. It's a completely meaningless statement.
I think that's a fair statement - the driving factor for the largest difference is the interior choices, such as number of toilets, buffet or no buffet, kitchen or no kitchen, etc.I'm interpreting that the 745 is not wildly different in terms of its capacity/ space utilisation than an 80x. One might be slightly better than the other, but not by a vast margin.
Are Turbostars underpowered? At Cambridge the XC Class 170s seem to labor out of the station, they also make a terrible racket. Plus the amount of fumes are annoying. As you said, they are extreamly sluggish compared to their contemporary akin to FLIRTS and Civities. I agree the GA FLIRTS are a premium product and far more pleasant to ride than the less refined Civity trains.Having had another day out in East Anglia on the 745 & 755 Flirts, I personally feel these units are the best modern trains on the network, as other units etc been on feel more plasticky and not so well built, like the 195’s and 331’s, which while a good improvement on Pacers they replaced, feel not well built.
I would like see them replace several fleets like the 158’s on the Norwich-Liverpool run and Turbostar‘s on Cross Country, as Turbostar‘s feel sluggish and slow.

I went on one of the ones that run from Liverpool Street to Norwich the other day. Didn’t care for it. No end doors, raised flooring here and there - a bit of a topsy-turvey environment
I do find them a bit like that, yes. I can't help but think that a better way of doing low floor would be a drop between the bogies in one coach with steps up and down, particularly given that it's not a very big drop, only about 10" or so.

The plan is to have a rubber strip at the platform edge to fill in the gap. I was on a tram in France which has similar raised seating areas as Stadler FLIRTs and someone fell off them and hurt there ankle. It might be worth replacing the raised seats on the FLIRTs with luggage racks to remove the risk of someone falling from the raised seated area.

If there are units which will only be seen on rare occaisions, then it might be OK to have a low speed limit, and a tight fit with the rubber strips that will cause them to wear quickly. I’ve tripped going up them and I have zero mobility issues.People do trip on the ramps on Merseyrail;
IETs, 387s and 345s regularly work on the relief lines, after 22:00 or 23:00 everything has to be pathed as if on the Reliefs between London and Reading because of two track railway. GWR 387s work the night time (23:00-06:00) stoppers between Reading and London Paddington between Monday and Friday in place of an Elizabeth Line 345 service. The 345s are basically just an upgraded version of the 387s. The 387s and 345s are about 10-12cm wider than a IET.The issue is with the units which are at the extremes. The slow acceleration of the hydraulic transmission Turbostars (168s/170s/171s) is due to the way they're geared I believe. They still use the same Voith 2-stage hydraulic transmissions as 75mph and 90mph Sprinters/Turbos, but with different (again) ratio final drive gearboxes to get the 100mph.Are Turbostars underpowered? This is true, however HS2 has dedicated platforms, so based on the 30+ train types comments I assumed we were talking about the conventional platforms, and discounted HS2.Because the Lizzie is a high platform system and so, per the current plan, is HS2. It's not good that it is, but because Heathrow and the core are high platform rather than 915mm that can't be fixed easily.

The Elizabeth line is a problem. The only real fix would be to have all its platforms be dedicated to Elizabeth Line services, but as you say that isn't easily done.

Going high for all services is a problem, because then you'd have to standardise at 1100mm for all the places served from there, which involves rebuilding every platform on the entire GWR network, which in practice then means you'd have to go and standardise the entire network on that. It's a terrible idea. The smallest number of platforms alterations would be to rebuild the elizabeth line to standard 915mm when the next generation of Lizzie Line trains comes in.Or, if you can provide a bypass for freight (does it?), you can go high for all services (needing to have freight on the reliefs is the reason you can't just raise all the Lizzie platforms). There is no low floor stock operating on the GWML at all nor is any planned, so you might be able to get close to level boarding on 80x and 165/166/Electrostar as well.
