Hi, hopefully the correct area of the forum.

I am going through some slides taken at Skegness on a Saturday in the late summer of 1982 - probably late August.

There were five SO workings plus a special, departing as follows :

17:30 Derby 20 070 + unidentified 20

17:45 Shrewsbury 45 120

17:57 Merrymaker to Bedford and Elstree 45 020

18:18 Leicester 20 088 + 20152

18:30 Derby 45 138

On the day in question it appears that 45050 was shunting rolling stock from the sidings to the station. From the sequence of slides it appears that the 20s worked the 18:18 to Derby and the 18:30 to Leicester thus leaving the 45. Was it the practice to send a loco to shunt/stand spare for a failure as I can see no reason for the "extra" which would then have had to run LD back to the East Midlands.

Any assistance to clarify the working arrangements would be much appreciated

I think that the date is Sunday 30th August 1981. 1818 Derby and 1830 Leicester were the 1981 public timetable Sunday trains. 1730 to Derby was the unadvertised relief. Though there are some discrepancies Rail Gen Archive has all of 20070-087, 20088-157 and 45138 working to and from Skegness that day. The discrepancies suggest that the locos may not have worked out and back on the same trains that day.

The pictures are definitely not on a Saturday, when the trains out of Skegness departed much earlier in the day.

According to Railgen archive, and based on Magdalia’s assumption of Sunday August 30th 1981

45138 1730 to Derby (they query if was 1818 departure)
20070/20087 1818 to Derby
20088/20157 1830 to Leicester
45050 1843 to Alfreton and Mansfield Parkway
20004/20026 1910 to Nottingham
