I looked for a thread on this but couldn't find one.

It seems to me that several stations are well-situated, but the location of the entrance means it's a lot further than needed for many people, especially because of level crossings or for those on foot.

Some examples I thought of:
  • Epsom (needs South exit)
  • Wimbledon (I think this is planned)
  • Exeter St Davids (West exit for Exwick/river etc)
  • East Croydon
  • Newton Abbot (East side for industrial estate/council offices)
What are some other examples?

On the Elizabeth line - Canary Wharf to the north (coming soon), Woolwich to the east (who owns the land?), Whitechapel to the north (when that Sainsburys is redeveloped).

Oxford - On the West side for easier access to the Botley Road and beyond, especially with the railway bridge having been closed for a while....
Also to reduce congestion at the station.

Peterborough is getting a west side entrance/exit see here:

The East West Rail non-statutory consultation had this about Cambridge:

Provision of a new bridge connecting the station building to all platforms and the east side of the station for colleagues to access train operating companies’ facilities and the existing depot.

Turning this into an east side entrance/exit is beyond the remit of East West Rail but there are people in (a small area of) Cambridge who would like it to happen.

Some examples I thought of:
  • Wimbledon (I think this is planned)
  • East Croydon

I use both of these and don't see what the need is for more entrances/exits.

Chester is one that could do with another exit. It actually used to have one in the form of an exit onto Hoole Road, from a footbridge at the north-west end of the station.

The current single entrance/exit to the station is a real pinch point I find.

Manchester Oxford Road

Currently, the only exit is in the North East corner onto Oxford Road/Whitworth Street. Given the development of the land immediately South of the railway, and the area around Deansgate, Western entrances from both the North and South sides of the railway would be good.

A South East exit would be nice for the University/Oxford Road to replace the current steps by the Salisbury.

One option may be a central bridge to the West of the listed canopies (possibly replacing the existing bridge) with a gateline at the south end. Long stairs/escalators down in both directions.

Some of the more ambitious development plans did have Western entrances.

Shieldmuir, particularly if you live in the estate just 50 metres to the north west as the crow flies, but a 25 minute walk.

Not to mention the excessive length of the walkways in the station and that footbridge.

Whilst not disagreeing with your premise, the simple fact was that Shieldmuir was 'dropped in' to a pre-existing network of paths and, in particular, the very long ramped footbridge. Then people wonder how you could build a station with two six-car platforms for only £288,000 from Strathclyde PTE (admittedly at 1990 prices). I was there for the official opening and the band was quite puffed out by the time they had paraded from one platform to the other!

It really needed the local authority or property developers to optimise access subsequently but this never seemed to happen. Compare what's happened more recently around Leven and Cameron Bridge, with quite a lot of new active travel links to the stations.

Wakefield Kirkgate could benefit from an entrance to the south side and footpath to access the Barbara Hepworth museum, but it'd be a "nice to have" rather than a "need".
Wakefield Westgate obviously doesn't need an exit towards the prison, but reopening the old exit in some fashion would massively improve integration with bus services along Westgate. As much as the "new" (it's well over a decade old at this point) entrance is an improvement on the old it makes transferring to buses much more troublesome, especially if you have luggage.

Possibly Camelon in Central Scotland. Anyone joining or exiting a train heading in the direction of Falkirk Grahamston/Edinburgh Waverley will have to negotiate the high level overbridge. Don't think there's any exit on that side of the station (platform one).

Manchester Victoria? There's no direct access to Trinity Way that I'm aware of (maybe when there are events on?) so it's quite a walk round. Admittedly there appears not much on that side of the station anyway, other than Strangeways and part of the university, but there's a large hotel and think there's a Travelodge nearby which could use a northern entrance.

That is a good point. There has been a huge redevelopment of the old Boddingtons brewery. Whilst not finished yet, there will be a very large population just across Trinity Way from the arena. The railway presents something of a blank wall to Trinity Way (appreciating that is the arena and not actually the railway)

Might be an answer; a foot tunnel from the far side of Trinity Way under the arena emerging at each platform would eliminate the walk round and crossing a busy road and gated/ticketed on that side. The lifts could also go down a further level. Huge cost and some disruption though!

Must admit wasn't aware of the development on that side other than the hotel/s!

Camborne - past Magnum side to use the over bridge so that people from Crane area and the like can get there much quicker. Widen and extend the platforms while you’re at it.
Truro - by the ramp for when the tix office closed to provide more capacity as can get very congested.

Highbury & Islington? After a football game the queues are massive to get in the entrance, but 99% of people [guess!] are queuing to get to the tube and the three railway lines there carry plenty of hot air as people who want to use them can't get anywhere but join that queue.

I'll add my vote to Oxford Road. An exit pointing towards Deansgate would be very handy, avoid a big double back, and allow an extra five minutes in the pub.

Swindon needs a northern entrance, and Cardiff Queen street needs an eastern entrance are two that come to mind.

When I lived there, I always thought Farnham could do with entrances at the country end of the platforms. The only entrance is at the London end and it's a long walk from the back of a 12 car train to the exit at the London end, and then back on yourself to the far end of the car park or the housing off Firgrove Hill.

I am surprised that no attempt was ever made to provide ramped access to Ash Vale station at the London end, where the platforms are not very far above Station Approach and the canal towpath. (The existing entrance at the country end has several flights of steep stairs).

Nuneaton really needs an exit on the east side. It's a very long way round from the main entrance to reach the housing on that side.

Newcastle upon Tyne: I haven’t been through it in nearly ten years but a Forth Street/south entrance was regularly talked about.

The latter point gets may vote, although not sure which pub! Could be done though, think there's a path towards Gloucester St although tight for room for gates etc. Similar to the back entrance for Leeds but on a much smaller scale!

Smaller than some of the others mentioned, however there has long been some level of local agitation for an access to Hitchin station from the up side. Essentially to avoid people having to walk round via a somewhat unsatisfactory road bridge, which as well as being unpleasant and narrow to walk through is also prone to flooding. Been talked about for years but never happened.

Unless someone decides to cut the scope due to the cost overrun, a new entrance on that side is part of the new platform works.

Liverpool Central could do with a southern entrance/exit direct to the Northern Line platforms to spread out demand.

In the medium term, another island platform should be constructed with direct northern/southern entrances as well, but at the moment, a southern entrance/exit to the existing Northern Line platform (perhaps with a CCTV monitored gateline to avoid a drastic increase in staffing costs) would make sense.
