Interesting point about the network maps, but I guess Northampton isn't planned to be served by 730/2s on a regular basis.

It is indeed a map of where 730/2s were originally intended to operate. It appears on one side above the doors, with a similar WMR opposite; the same applies in 730/0s. Passengers may not appreciate that it is an operations map; ones travelling around Birmingham may look at the LNR one to make plans for travel and see no way of getting from Coventry to Rugby or to Northampton. They probably won't realise that it's an operations-led document, why would they?

2Q91 Bletchley to Crewe with a corresponding 2Q94 move back later. Potential unit swap over move
It's a test or training run, scheduled for most days this week. 2Q91 Bletchley to Crewe then 2Q92/2Q93 to Nuneaton and back, then 2Q94 back to Bletchley.
It ran Tuesday and Wednesday (yesterday) with 730204. Today it's reported elsewhere as 10-car with 730221+730204.

RTT reports 730235 on 5Q40/41 (Bletchley-Rugby-Bletchley) yesterday and today.

But, by that logic, the maps in all of the other WMR-branded fleets would need to be changed. The 172s show the Snow Hill Lines, Birmingham-Hereford, Leamington-Nuneaton and nothing else. The 196s show Birmingham-Hereford, Birmingham-Shrewsbury and Leamington-Nuneaton. The 730/0s show the Cross City, Walsall-Wolverhampton, the Chase Line, and Birmingham-Coventry. It's just how the maps on WMT work. The vast majority of passengers will just use a journey planner to find out where they need to go. The 350s show a full WMT route map at the carriage ends.

The LNR maps on the 730s simply show where the 730s operate, and unfortunately for residents of Northampton, outside of peak extras and Sunday diverts, they won't run via Northampton. They also don't show the line from Rugby-Birmingham, but I haven't seen anywhere near as many people unhappy about that.

Who are the maps for? Passengers or enthusiasts?

Updated maps will be installed shortly on the /2s, not the highest priority on a rollout of a new fleet but important to get right once final deployment determined.

Ultimately not a massive issue given over 70% passengers plan their journey via Trainline or other app.

The majority of passengers indeed probably use journey planners. Before their invention timetables and Bradshaw (and the latter was certainly intended as a 'journey planner') were used probably to a similar degree. However, that's in the situation where a passenger has already decided to travel to a specfic station for a particular purpose.

Network maps have a different purpose, though. The sales potential of them has long been known; for instance, the North Eastern Railway around 1903 put up large tiled maps of their network on the walls of major station. The purpose of this was to sell the idea that, as well as your planned journeys, the railway could take you to lots of other, interesting places for the day or holiday that perhaps you hadn't thought of. In the context of LNR, people might notice Bletchley, for example, and think 'that's where there's a museum about the Second World War, didn't realise we could get there direct from, say, Tile Hill'.

The importance of Northampton being on the map vs Rugby-Birmingham is that the very first booked 730/2 working, with a lot of publicity, terminated at the former but as far as I know there's never been a 730/2 running on the latter.

I'm not sure that the 730/2s are such a great advance over the 350/1, /3 and /4 in every detail that Northampton should be disappointed that they visit there infrequently. However, the great benefit they do provide is their introduction results in the demise of the 350/2, so the journey to London or Birmingham will no longer be made crammed into the very narrow 3 and 2 seating, without tables.

Indeed. But much of the railway is operations-led not customer-led, and LNR is no exception.

Getting all the detail right is important, that's why there's Project Managers.

You'd not have imagined it in any of the previous 5 days as the 730/2s entered service on Monday.

Can anyone help with identifying the two 730/2s on test today between Crewe and Nuneaton? Fairly sure one was 204.

Confirmed as 204 & 221 on a separate thread.

Are there more 730/2 diagrams on the Birmingham-Liverpool due next week? Or will it be several weeks before more Birmingham-Liverpool diagrams go over to 730/2?.

See post #3256:
21st July will see 2 of the 8 trains switch to 730/2.
2 more will swap on 4th August.
2 more will swap on 18th August.
2 350s will remain.

All 730/2 will run as single, 5 coach, sets

*Edit*

There will be a 10 car set for ECS moves on Saturday mornings from the 27th, 5F03 Crewe to Lime St. That's the only 10 car due to be out of anyone does want to see a double set.

730217 and 730212 are on the Liverpool to Birmingham services today. Seen when passing the Arriva Traincare Depot at Crewe today were 730226/233/234 plus one other.

Weirdness of 212 only opening the front 3 coaches on a Birmingham bound train at Crewe (on platform 6).

I guess the ASDO thinks it's going into one of the bays which can't take 5 coaches and there isn't an override available

There is nothing to tell it what to open if it comes over the crossover halway down the platform. So it defaults to the shortest platform.

That has chaos written over it on the evening services, especially if people have had a bit too much to drink and don't hear the announcements to move forward

I travelled on the 14:12 Lime St - New St yesterday, only as far as South Parkway, and although I was really quite impressed with the units - quiet, comfortable and decent ride quality, but not enough tables for my liking - there do appear to be a couple of issues. One of the toilets was out of use - a problem previously mentioned on here - and on arrival at South Parkway the guard announced that we should ignore the auto message about only some doors opening when in fact they all will. In the carriage I was in there wasn't an automated message saying that - all we got was "We are now arriving at" followed by nothing at all, not even the station name.

It might be different at stations where whole carriages are locked out but at Bournville, for instance, it doesn't announce that 'only the front doors on this carriage will open' until the train has stopped and the doors are unlocked, which isn't ideal...

I rode the 730/2’s for my first time on Monday, doing 14.31 Runcorn-Birmingham, then 16.04 Birmingham- Liverpool, then 18.12 Liverpool-Birmingham, all on 730233. I found these 730/2’s to be nice units, with really good acceleration, nice interiors, and an upgrade for the longer journey they are on than the 730/0’s, and I sat in the slightly plusher section at the front, which think declassified First or something similar.

There was a technical issue with the doors on the 14.31 Runcorn Birmingham at Crewe which cost about 8-10 mins, think door interlocking problem, but apart from that nothing else bad to report about them. Overall they are good units, though I think still not as good as the Flirts.

Neither did I.

Was still expecting the 350/1's, 350/3's & 350/4's to solely do these services now the 350/2's are going.
And soon enough they will or at least that's the plan at the moment.

730/2 will move over to Trent Valley services in December, Birmingham-Liverpool will revert back to 350's.

The introduction on these services now is for Crewe Drivers to maintain competence ahead of the TV service conversion, the New Street Drivers maintain competence through the 730/0's anyway.

If New St drivers can maintain competency through working 730/0 then so can Crewe drivers as they work Wolves-Walsall as much as any other route.

Crewe conductors on the other hand don't have any 730 work other than the current Liverpool work.
