In a surprise move, 847 is currently out today along with 852. Noticed on the 1L14 diagram 14:51 from LIV to Norwich.

Was meant to be 863 and 788 so a nice surprise when I noticed the back unit was different, I went to the front and seen all purple! Looks very nice in person I have to say…

170502 has swapped with 170504 today at Crewe with the refurbishment program.

West Midlands Trains decided to not keep the 350/2s because their leasing costs were more expensive than those of the 350/1s/3s/4s. The 360s' leasing costs would have to be even more expensive than the 350/2s' leasing costs for the 350/2s' leasing costs to be cheaper than those of the 360s.

IIRC, the 350/2s had a low leasing cost but high charges for mileage, while the rest of the 350s had a higher leasing cost but lower charges for mileage.

The 350/2s were originally ordered for the London - MK/Tring commuter workings (see the 3+2 seating...), where they'd need a lot of stock to extend peak services, but off-peak, they could sit idle. The latter price structure works well for this, as they don't cost too much while sitting around, and the mileage would be kept low.

As passenger numbers grew London Midland/LNWR ended up with higher stock utilisation, and likes to send any 350 to any 350 service, so the 350/2s cost increased.

Considering it’s only a refresh for the 158s that is a far superior job than I expected. Hats off EMR.

Thanks guys! I have just checked re 170422-424 and a quick google shows 424 with a Southern interior so have updated the original post. Completely forgot about them being 171's for a bit!

Don't think Southern did anything to the interiors when they came from Scotrail

They covered the seats (very poorly; the First Scotrail moquette is apparently still underneath, and the Southern astro-turf is very loosely fitted), changed the carpet and painted the handrails. Effectively a complete refurbishment, just not a very good one.

Correct, if you look closely at the tip up seats, and feel the headrests on the main seats, you can just about see or feel the original NX ScotRail Moquette lurking underneath. Southern just fitted new covers over the top of the existing ones.

I did wonder if that was going to get done, or if there was a slim chance it could come “home”. Just a shame for EMR that so many of those seats ended up in the scrapyard with the FGW HSTs (although I may know of some available!).

A load of them went into 153s, which was about the worst possible thing to do with them as they're quite low, so only the tallest passengers could see out of the window!

I think you’ve got muddled there, as it’s the Grammer IC3000s I’m talking about.

Ah sorry, I thought you were talking about 158s. Yes, it's a shame the IC3000s were binned rather than re-used, there are plenty of 15x around the network which would have benefitted from them.

Apparently it's had/is having a survey done for the ROSCO and EMR to decide what to do with it any time now.

It might just end up going purple, but I suppose that depends on the condition of the seat shells etc as I can't imagine there's many spares of them available.

It also has some internal equipment in different locations that might make it tricky to standardise.

I don't think there's any chance of it leaving though - it's been in the East Midlands slightly longer than it was at Salisbury now in any case!
