Not a new thing but perhaps, post covid, more common as people have moved further away from London seeking cheaper living costs and perhaps only doing it a couple of days a week.
But, for a given number of commuters travelling 5 days per week before the pandemic, it needs twice as many commuters travelling 2-3 times per week to generate the same number of bums on seats.

The 2-3 days a week commuting is not an new thing either, it has been common in the Fens for a long time.

So up-thread it was reported that LNER will run class 91 + 7 Mark IV + DVT on some of the Newcastle terminators. I have noticed this curious service on real time trains;

A test run with 7 coached maybe?

Timing load suggests so, as Mk4 coaches are approximately 41 tonnes and the 225 workings are usually E410 (Electric locomotive hauling 410 tonnes)

There’s a more recent separate thread about testing short sets, the RTT link for the up direction was posted in it:
Most of the short set discussion in this thread had been moved there a few days ago.

Does anyone have a download or pics of the new timetable draft.

1230 from Edinburgh which is the 0952 ex Aberdeen is always late and has 5 mins to load at Edinburgh which is wild.

Just wandering if this changes any

The draft intercity ECML timetables are attached. The 12:30 from Edinburgh is still due to arrive there at 12:25.

Historically that service has always had an extra minute on the WTT at EDB (12:31 dep WTT) and I would imagine it still will. Obviously that won’t be reflected in the publicly issued documents for the time being.

So a Newcastle xx33 is timed 3m behind an Edinburgh (xx30) off KX and calls only Stevenage & Grantham then York 10m slower than the Edinburgh. Can't see these being that well filled unless they have some control over pricing which the current fares arrangement doesn't permit. You have to wonder for all the performance implications this timetable imports whether it will last more than a couple of timetable cycles before being modified back to something closer to todays.

Why or how not, given that that seems to work for Avanti to fill Euston – Preston / Scotland via Birmingham services?

No doubt anybody searching for London to Newcastle will have cheaper tickets for the Newcastle terminator compared with the Scottish train. Both will probably be paying over the odds compared to searching for London to Blaydon when the offpeak fares are capped with the pesky super offpeak ticket.

To be comparable to that you would have to run via Leeds and then carry onto Edinburgh and maybe they will do that once TRU is completed. Whats planned is limited to much lower levels of passenger flows and seems to be a sop to having to cover or station calls that the modestly accelerated Edinburgh's have dropped.

It'll be interesting to see if the 07:50 and 08:03 weekday southbound LNER calls at Stevenage will actually be implemented, which would give Stevenage 4 fast trains to London in the space of 15 minutes (alongside the 07:52 GN ex-Peterborough and 08:01 TL to Brighton). I thought that LNER was averse to calling southbound trains at Stevenage during the morning peak due to the risk of overcrowding?

Are any LNER calls there currently (or recently have been) pick-up / set-down only? The only LNER examples I can think of are some very late-night ones north of York.

Stevenage’s current first LNER southbound on weekdays is 1B81 ex Lincoln to King’s Cross at 08:58. As was said likely to avoid issues into King’s Cross in the busy morning peak. There’s not really a lot of room for error most of the time, least of all at that time of day.

The only Anglo-Scot’s to stop at Stevenage on weekdays is one northbound right at the start of the day (1S04) and 6 southbound at the end of the day - 1E22, 1E23, 1E24, 1E25, 1E27 and 1E29, the last of which is set down only due to it being after 00:00. There is 1 Newcastle northbound at the end of the day on top of that - 1N34 (21:00 ex King’s Cross).

I’m not aware of any pick up only’s at Stevenage, but as I say 1E29 southbound on weekdays is set down only due to its post midnight time.

1N36 and 1D36 are both set down only all the way, but neither stop at Stevenage. 1N35 is set down only after York.

So if you compare that to the new timetable hopefully that will give you an idea of what’s changed.

I think there is a couple at the very end of the day, when there is practically nobody around. Enforcing set down restrictions on the LNER calls in the morning peak would be very difficult due to the volume of passengers at the station during peak times (the draft timetable also doesn't show the calls as set down only).

Really?

Any train: £200.80
Express LNER train 70 min: £197.60
Express LNER train Advance: £177.60
Semi-express LNER train 70 min: £118.30
Slower-express LNER Advance: £98.30
Any Lumo train: £89
Lumo Advance: £68.90

Looks like a perfectly possible hypothetical output to me for a search in an hour time band, for London to Newcastle, based on the common prices in use today. There's actually a third LNER train in the mix most of the time anyway.

These draft timetables for December 2025 timetable services on the East Coast Mainline are dated November 2024. Does anyone know when the finally agreed December 2025 timetables will be released?

Probably start filtering through to RTT next month.

I'd go with next month(ish) personally. It's a pretty complex timetable change with lots of moving pieces so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't start appearing on RTT (and similar sites) until towards the end of August or even into September.

I certainly don't expect LNER services to appear first this time round. Usually it's whomever has the least changes, so probably ScotRail or other TOCs with no planned significant changes.
