So here we are with electrifications now being cancelled, paused or only partially completed due to ‘battery EMUs’ or ‘BEMUs’ which will be able to run off both battery and the overhead wires.
Of course, this helps decarbonise the railways, but there are many other benefits of electrification that can’t be gained by using battery trains. These include better acceleration, higher reliability and easier maintenance. They are also virtually untested, at least in this country. Are battery trains really the future, or is it another excuse for not continuing with actual proper electrification?
