Blimey, 4 hours to get from Weymouth to Woking! From my notes (where I had jotted down the time of the picture) I just assumed that they must have been running late.

It was primarily to carry mail, so there were lengthy stops to load and unload the bags, and for the attachment and detachment of vans. It ran to times that suited the Post Office and any passengers would consider themselves lucky that there was a train in the middle of the night.

@lostwin(m) I never tire of looking at your evocative shots of the overnight "mixed" workings.
1986, my fifteen year old self was taking 35mm photos but I lived too far north for any chance to photograph or travel on them.
So, instead, I'll wallow in nostalgia - and wistful wishes of "if only I could've done".

As my fostered German Shepherd would say: "All my favourite things!"
Oban was the one route I failed to "clear" during my 1988 and 1990 Scottish Rovers.
406 looks in stunning condition - and I really like the inclusion of the sign as well as the well known hilltop folly.

01/11/86. 73002 at Dover Western Docks, it had worked in on the 03.30 from Victoria.

The lights and station roof look superb in that shot. I used to shoot slide film with fixed low ASA, so there was an unpleasant greenish hue to a lot of my night shots, but these are much crisper in monochrome.

Wasn’t that down to the fluorescent tubes of the time? I had a purplish lens filter to try and overcome that

I haven't worked much with colour in Photoshop yet, but i imagine that green hue could be corrected fairly easily with the tools available.

Derby class 108 DMUs were regulars on the Cumbrian Coast. This Barrow service is one such member of that class.

Bottom pic has a nice pre led position light ground signal and an LNER type speed restriction sign.
The box between the speed testricyion sign and the points had facilities for hand winding the points. Anyone know the points type?
I assume part of the Edinburgh PSB installation

13/08/85. Loco change at Bournemouth. 73130 has brought in the down Channel Islands Boat Train, 09.40 ex Waterloo, and hands over the reins to 33103 for the last leg into Weymouth. I don't recall if the headboard had been removed from the ED before I took the shot or whether it was newly attached to the train at Bournemouth. Would this have worked right through to the Quay? - I have always regretted not having experienced that.

Headcode 90 was Waterloo to Weymouth Quay so it would indeed have worked through.

15/09/85. 'HST at Leicester' is the extent of my notes from the time. I can add that it is on platform 2 - so heading North - and it's named Darlington, but that's your lot. I'm not sure what the implement is just behind the sign, first time I've seen it in my shots, any guesses?

I did it a few years earlier when it was 09:54 from Waterloo.
To Weymouth Quay, yes. I did it once.
At the time there were very few 73-hauled passenger trains apart from this. A morning commuter Chertsey-Waterloo, for example, was an exception. Until Gatwick Express I guess.

Thanks for the clarification. I would have taken the ED through to Bournemouth, so that makes it even more annoying that I then got off the train. Maybe it was outside the limits of my Rover ticket.
