I had a heated argument with a 'Revenue enforcement officer' at Cardiff Central last week.
Myself a friend had travelled back from London and he was intending to get a taxi at Cardiff Central to Barry. However, it was a Saturday afternoon and the station was mobbed at Cardiff, so we decided to both travel by train to Penarth (where I live) and I would drive him to Barry.
There was a Penarth train due in a few minutes and I went down to the self service ticket machines to buy a ticket for him, leaving my friend to look after the luggage on the platform.
Immediately when I started to use the use the machine which was inside the barriers, the Enforcement chap came over asked what I was doing, buying a ticket there?
I told him, yes I am buying a ticket for onward travel, he started shouting that I was not allowed to buy a ticket inside the barriers. I ignored him and continued as he was shouting at me less than a metre away in a very confrontational way. When I got the tickets and walked away saying the train was now at the platform, he threatened to get the police as I had bought a ticket inside the barriers. I did eventually show one of his colleagues the London-Penarth ticket and said the chap needs to calm down a bit and stop shouting at people.
Both just caught the Penarth train as the doors were closing but the train was so busy, the tickets were not even checked! So much for doing the right thing.
My question is, was the Enforcement officer right, that I could not buy a ticket from machines inside the barrier, if so, why on earth are they there in the first place.? and can staff stop you inside a railway station and demand to see your ticket, even though you are not even on a train?
