A date would be useful. If you're traveling far in advance (a maximum of 12 weeks for bookings) then buying advance tickets will probably be a good option if however you want to travel in the next few days the cheap ones will have sold out so you will be looking at more open tickets (open tickets don't restrict you to specific trains but cost more as a result, whereas advances are cheap but only valid on the booked train).

Advance tickets, all singles. You are tied to nominated trains. A railcard will get you 33% off.
Add tube fare across London !
Axminster to Waterloo (SWT) and back, £12 e/w - without railcard.
Kings Cross to York (EC) and back, £13 e/w - without railcard.
You could go to Exeter and get the XC service to York - but looks pricey ! there are lots of possible splits this way, but not sure if there would be any worth doing.

(But not valid on trains that arrive at King's Cross before 1117). No restrictions Saturdays/Sundays/Bank Holidays. No restrictions between Axminster or Dorchester and London and vice-versa.
Advance Single tickets are available from £40.50 on East Coast & Connecting TOCs, this price is discounted by 10% when booking at eastcoast.co.uk. Valid at specified times, must be bought in advance, and not refundable.
It will probably be cheaper to split the journey into a combination of tickets.
If you wish to go via London, try splitting in London. You could also stay the night there. Consider using Grand Central from London to York, some trains are as cheap as £15 and you can take advantage of the £15 fares if you stay a night in London. Despite being very cheap, the £15 fares are available for purchase on board the train. Click here for details of the GC £15 offer. Alternatively East Coast offer cheap Advance fares from London to York if you book far in advance (I get £10 advances even on busy trains, when booking 12 weeks in advance) or if you do not book far in advance you can still pay a low fare if you book on a train at a time of low demand. e.g. the 22:00 London to York.
You will need to do this research yourself, looking at dates & times of your choosing, but if you get stuck or have any questions, feel free to post a reply here and ask

That's a very long way round, and would take longer than walking from Waterloo to King's Cross!
Unless you specifically want to experience the North London Line, the TfL website may assist you in finding an alternative route across London.
If you want the quickest way from Waterloo to King's Cross, then take the Bakerloo Line to Oxford Circus then change to the adjacent platform for the Victoria Line to King's Cross. Both are Northbound.

my cousin wants to go, he's confined to a wheelchair. is there an overgound route between waterloo and kings cross.
It is possible, but somewhat impractical, to get from Waterloo to Kings Cross using only wheelchair-accessible rail transport. You would take the Jubilee line to London Bridge and change onto the Northern Line to Kings Cross St. Pancras. There are lifts covering all three stations for the journey, but I think you would have to make the interchange at London Bridge at street level as only one entrance to each line at London Bridge is accessible.
Much easier I think would be to use the 59 bus.

In addition to island's suggestions, another option may be using Thameslink.
From Waterloo's main concourse, take the lift up to the Waterloo East platforms. From there, take a train to London Bridge, taking care to get one that stops at platform 5 at London Bridge. (If you can quote dates and times of travel, someone on this forum will help you identify trains which stop at platform 5.) From platform 6 on the same platform island, catch a northbound FCC service by the Thameslink route towards Bedford. Get off at St Pancras. Take 2 lifts up to the ticket barriers on St Pancras ground floor. There is then flat access across Pancras Road to Kings Cross platforms 8 - 11. Turn right along platform 8 if you need platforms 0 - 7. If it's raining, you may get less wet by taking a lift from St Pancras ground floor down to the Underground northern ticket hall. Another lift near the ticket machines in the ticket hall takes you to Kings Cross close to platforms 9 - 11.
But all this needs Thameslink services to be running. Thameslink is closed for engineering work most weekends.
Can I recommend you allow a minimum of 1 hour 20 minutes to cross from Waterloo to King's Cross? Yes, I know that's longer then the minimum requirement, but you don't want to be worried about making a connection (and delays do happen). It also gives you time to get any refreshments etc.
While I know many people could do the transfer in a lot less time than that, if you have to take lifts etc, you really do need to allow plenty of time.

Do you mean that two of you will be travelling? If so, then on the local Esk Valley line between Middlesbrough and Grosmont (where you connect with the NYMR), then you can simply buy on board - there's no benefit to buying in advance - and Northern offer a two-for-the-price-of-one-and-a-half deal called Northern Duo. As long as the guard realises that the two of you are travelling together, they will normally sell you this without being asked, its a friendly line as well as being very scenic!
[On the subject of being scenic, its worth jumping out at Battersby to watch the driver open a very dull modern-looking steel cabinet on the platform, only to reveal 2 ancient mechanical token machines, both of which (s)he must operate before proceeding!]

You mentioned that your cousin was in a wheelchair. Does he have a Disabled Persons Railcard? If so both he and a travelling companion can get 34% off nearly all types of rail tickets, both Standard and First Class. Costs £20 for one year. A cost you will probably recoup with just this one journey to York.

NYMR is a pain in the ar*e by train form York. You will need to go to Darlo then Boro then onto the Esk Valley Line - Grosmont OR York - Boro (Via Northallerton) - Esk Valley Line - Grosmont. There are few trains down the Esk Valley that give you a decent run on the NYMR. ( I have tried it many times form Darlo or Northallerton - Less than 40 miles but takes all day!)
your best bet would be the (urgh!:roll
bus from York to Pickering ( could this be the Coastliner? ) it goes from right outside the station. I am sure someone more au fait with the bus routes can help you out.
You could also consider the Wensleydale line. That is easier form York. Simply a train to Northalelrton and the bus to Leeming. The timetbale dovetials nicely with the trains and you could easily have a decent run out all day.
You could also consider hiring a car form York. Well worth it to get out and explore the Moors. They are wonderful. Also if you can take a trip up into the dales. There are no finer areas in England.
