Locations of Permit To Travel Machines?

Hi All,

I apologise if I’ve missed it. Would anyone know a list Permit to Travel machines still active in the Southeast of England?

I’d be very grateful for any information.
I think there are no working original Almex Autoslot AS88/AS89 machines left. They are almost all removed now. The few that remain are all broken.

Beaulieu Road, Holton Heath, Longcross, Millbrook, Redbridge, are the only five working ones left but they are the newer Metric Aura type. They are more modern machines that print in thin receipt roll rather than thicker card stock. They all should work but they are often out of order temporarily or run out of tickets and take ages to get restocked.

Other than that i think there are none left. The final working original Autoslot one i was aware of was at Salfords and i got a ticket from that one in summer 2024 about eight months ago. That has sadly since been removed.

Thank you that’s great to know.

would anyone of the locations of the machine that don’t work as I’d still be interested to get some photos of them?

As of last month there was still two broken PERTIS machines at Southease station. They were both still there. Southease is very unique as it is the only station to have two of them. Faygate and Holmwood and Warnham also had one broken one each as of two months ago. They are rapidly removing them (i know of three broken ones on the Southern network that got removed last month) so i can not confirm whether they are still there as of today. But it is worth checking. Also i saw one each (again all broken) at Fishbourne and Nutbourne and Warblington four months ago and at Ford and Glynde five months ago. Again i am not sure if they are still there. But these are the best places to check. I think a couple stations on the Greater Anglia network also have some broken ones.

Thanks you that’s great as I’m based down on the south coast I’ll check the locations out!

Thanks for confirming! I can’t believe SWR guards still know what these things are, though they are the only TOC with functioning PERTIS machines
They were certainly in my ticketing course but it did still take me a minute to remember how to put one through my machine

A little update on what I’ve seen today.
Southease, Faygate & Haydons Road have all lost their permit to travel machines. If I get the chance to visit the West Coast Route between Brighton and Chichester I’m happy to update this thread on what I find out!

Would anyone know if Fishersgate or Portslade ones are still there?

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Warblington’s (broken) one was in situ as of Sunday
That’s good to know, one to add to the list of surviving but broken machines.

Portslade was removed a couple of weeks ago unfortunately. I was there very recently. It is definitely gone. Aldrington and Fishersgate were there about six months ago but i have not checked recently. Cooksbridge and Plumpton are two others that may possibly still exist but i am not entirely certain.

Thanks for the update on Portslade. Next time I go through Plumpton, Cooksbridge and glynde I’ll look. Would they have all been on the platforms?

Yes they are all on the platforms. Glynde is on P2 (EB) on the platform under the road bridge. Cooksbridge is on P2 (EB) on the platform under the building overhang. Plumpton is on P1 (WB) on the platform on the south side of the waiting shelter.

Holton Heath is my nearest station and I pick up a pertis ticket every time as long as the machine is working. Good to see it was back in action in Feb at least.

Great, definitely one to visit. Is it a newer machine or older one?

Thanks you
Holton Heath is a newer style Metric Aura machine that prints on receipt roll.

I can confirm that Glynde’s Pertis Machine has now been removed. The image was taken where it once stood on P2 under the bridge.

The machine at Ford has been removed, I will try and take a look at Nutbourne on the way past there today.

The machine at Holmwood was still in situ as of yesterday morning.

Nutbourne has been removed as well.

Thanks for the update, Michaeltarquin.

Would anyone know if either of these stations machines would still be standing?
Aldrington?
Fishersgate?
East Worthing?
As I believe these were only ones near Brighton on the west coast way route.

No worries!

I was under the impression that the machine at Aldrington was long gone. I certainly didn't see it last time I was there.

Fishersgate's wasn't even fixed to the ground properly last time I saw it but I'm not aware it's been removed.

Warblington's machine has also now definitely been removed.

Wow thanks.
They are disappearing very quickly!!

Would anyone know if there’s still any around on the Southeastern Network!

No unfortunately the Southeastern network has none left. Not even broken ones. The final three PERTIS machines got removed in March 2017 eight years ago. They replaced and removed theirs very quickly.

Thanks for letting me know. They really cleared them out quickly!

I read somewhere that Sutton Common / West Sutton might still have them.

Hi all, just checking to see if anyone has anymore information on any machines that have been removed over the past few days? I’ll be passing through Cooksbridge tomorrow so will happily update on here if it’s still standing.

Haydons Road, Loughborough Junction, Morden South, Saint Helier, South Merton, Sutton Common, Tooting, West Sutton, Wimbledon Chase, all had one PERTIS machine each when i visited last year. They were all broken. So these machines might still exist.

I'll be in the area and will investigate that one in a couple of weeks
It was working as of the 8th of March.

Thanks, if I can go to the Sutton Loop I’ll check the line out.
You can see Sutton common's on street view from last year: https://www.google.com/maps/@51.374...try=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDMxOS4yIKXMDSoASAFQAw==

These are such an endangered thing, I've not even been able to find any on display at a museum (not heard back from them all yet)

Wow that’s great, I’ll try and check it out tomorrow and update the forum unless someone else gets there first!

The idea of a Permit to travel machine always has seemed to be really foreign to me living in Scotland. Has there ever been a PERTIS machine installed in a Scottish station? Or is this something exclusive to England?

I’ve just passed through Cooksbridge and there’s no sign of the Permit Machine. Another one that’s been removed!

Sutton Commons machine has also gone.
