Hatton and Lapworth also finish today, witnessed first hand now out of action.
Lapworth this afternoon had a team in a van taking it out of action, informed Hatton to follow.
I walked past Lapworth a couple of days ago and took a photo of where the machine previously stood. I haven’t posted photos to this website before so apologies if it’s not the right way up!

Yes, that's correct, thanks for the further information, Lapworths has now gone also, that is exactly where Lapworths was, exactly the same situation with the Hatton one, exactly the same status as the removal job done at Hatton. So Lapworth and Hatton now gone.
Rip Pertis Machines and end of a era for Pertis Machines ie, Chiltern lines and West Midlands notably Centro Snow Hill Lines.

Metric Aura Machine at HOLTON HEATH Not Functioning This Morning 11/5. Displaying OOS and not accepting Money.
Hope this helps
If you tell SWR on Twitter or send a Customer Service email, I’ve found that they respond and fix it within the next week. So it shouldn’t be too long before it is repaired.

Longcross also displaying out of service (as per image). I presume it will be fixed at some stage, as the board by the entrance instructs any would-be traveller to obtain one!

The stock has been loaded correctly, but it has been pre-printed incorrectly, see attachment.
The stock should only include the Permit To Travel panel that should have been placed at the top next to the black rectangle. The conditions have been pre-printed but are printed by the machine which is why they appear twice.
This was mentioned some time ago. Can't remember what station that was but if the stock was printed in bulk this will eventually appear at all other stations unless it is withdrawn and new stock printed.

Many thanks for the information. That is a shame. There are hardly any working ones left these days.

I thought i would make a list of the current status of PERTIS machines on the Southern network from observations by myself and from other people on the forum:

SOUTHERN:
Aldrington (P2) AS88 02912 - BROKEN (DEAD)
Ashurst (P2) AS89 05672 - REMOVED
Balcombe (P2) AS88 02930 - REMOVED
Bishopstone (ent) AS?? ????? - REMOVED
Cheam (P2) AS88 02819 - BROKEN (DEAD)
Cooksbridge (P2) AS89 05648 - BROKEN (DEAD)
East Worthing (P2) AS89 05680 - BROKEN (NIU LIGHT)
Faygate (P2) AS88 02873 - ????
Fishbourne (P2) AS89 05571 - ????
Fishersgate (P2) AS88 02910 - BROKEN (DEAD)
Ford (P2) AS89 05570 - BROKEN (NIU LIGHT)
Glynde (P2) AS88 02829 - BROKEN (DEAD)
Holmwood (P2) AS88 02907 - BROKEN (DEAD)
Newhaven Harbour (P1) AS89 05647 - REMOVED

Southease (P1) AS89 05650 - ????
Southease (P2) AS89 05655 - ????
Warblington (P1) AS89 05758 - ????
Warnham (P2) AS88 02917 - BROKEN (COIN JAM)

If anyone has any updates or information to the above that would be much appreciated.

There are also a few left on the Great Northern and Thameslink networks but i am pretty sure they are all broken.
I was out on my travels on the Southern network a few weeks ago and did notice more than a few machines still in situ. For the ones you have a ???? against i can maybe add a few morsels of info - nothing too exciting though.

Southease: Both machines are still there and i can confirm the one on P2 is BROKEN (DEAD) ( i didnt check the one on P1 but a previous commenter has confirmed that same status)
Fishbourne: BROKEN (NIU LIGHT)
Warblington: BROKEN (NIU LIGHT)

I wasn't particularly looking for them but thats was what i encountered (& remembered).

I still need to visit Faygate and Plumpton on my travels so i will make a point of checking them when i do.

EDIT: Seems i didn't check all the subsequent comments so apologies for some duplication

Best chances are the ones at SWR Stations eg Holton Heath and Beaulieu Road. Would be surprised if you still can get anything out of any of the Southern Operated ones.

Chilterns machines are now replaced with card only ticket machines (Hatton, Lapworth and I believe Denham Golf Club) or in the case of the Sudbury stations rely solely on Oyster/contactless readers

I can confirm the one at Beaulieu Road was in tip top working condition at 8am Thursday 28/11/2024. It looked clean and well serviced compared to anything else i have come across.

I missed the one at Holton Heath 2 days earlier but it was at 6.30am (so full on dark) and raining. My bad for not seeking it out.

Longcross is still out of order. Looks alright, takes your money and you press the button and then it returns it and says that it's not working.

I have gone around the country to confirm where the last PERTIS machines are located. I believe that there are 37 machines across the whole country now and I have been to all of them. This is through what people have said recently and Google Maps where possible. These are the remaining ones as listed by TOC managing the station:

Greater Anglia
  • Wrabness (Dead, visited 07/07/23)
  • White Notley (Dead, visited 07/07/23)
  • Cressing (Dead, visited 07/07/23)
Wrabness has been removed, I was there on the 12th of January 2025.

This thread has been invaluable to my research for a Youtube video, so thank you all who have contributed.

Thanks for the update, would be interested to know the status of the other PERTIS machines, especially the non-SWR owned ones. Would imagine more have been removed. From a ticketing standpoint all would be redundant, so it is a matter of time before all are gone.

Southern have been removing lots of their machines recently. Salfords (which was one of the last ones that actually worked and i managed to get a ticket from it last year) has been removed very recently. Portslade (although this one was broken for years) has been removed very recently. I suspect other Southern stations have had theirs removed recently too.

Sadly i suspect there are probably no working examples of the original Almex Autoslot AS88/AS89 machines left anywhere. Chiltern Railways used to have a few working ones but i think they all got replaced last year. Maybe there is a working one somewhere but i doubt it.

I think the only working PERTIS machines are the five newer Metric Aura type (Beaulieu Road, Holton Heath, Longcross, Millbrook, Redbridge) at SWR stations.

I didn't know these were a thing! I don't recall ever seeing these in South Yorkshire. An earlier post alluded to some West Yorkshire stations having them. I don't recall seeing them in the late 90s/early 2000s, maybe they disappeared long before this?

West Yorkshire only had PERTIS machines at some stations on the Leeds to Bradford Forster Square and Ilkley and Skipton lines. They were very short lived. I think they were removed around the late 1990s.

A few smaller stations in West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester and Merseyside also had the version that issued proper tickets. These were the same model as the PERTIS machines but also had a dial where you selected your station and it displayed the fare. I think these lasted there until around the early 2000s.

PERTIS machines were far more common in the NSE area. They were never used that widely outside of the area. West Yorkshire was an oddity and they only lasted a few years.

Ah that explains it! I knew I'd never seen them on the Penistone or Hallam/Dearne lines. I hadn't been on the Airedale lines at that point.

The machine at Longcross was not working when i last alighted there (several weeks ago now).

Hi

Came across this thread and thought this would be of interest.

Holton Heath machine is definitely working as of 11th Feb as I was handed this when I was checking tickets. Never had one before. The sides were printed out of rotation but the printing itself was very clear. It was much cooler than I thought and I wish I could have kept it but alas I had to pay it in.

Sold an Evening Out Single HOL - POO for the record.

Thanks for confirming! I can’t believe SWR guards still know what these things are, though they are the only TOC with functioning PERTIS machines

Hi All,

I apologise if I’ve missed it. Would anyone know a list Permit to Travel machines still active in the Southeast of England?

I’d be very grateful for any information.
