Also the May 1973 timetable was when the day Paignton to Newcastle service was extended to Edinburgh. It was the year before the (faster) services on the WCML via Birmingham were to be introduced, I did wonder if it was some competitive spirit by the NE-SW team of the era. At a time when there was effectively no daytime WCML service at all in Scotland, due to the electrification works, it did well.
The only weekday Paignton in the 1973 to 1974 WTT, to which I do not have the amendments, is 1E12 09.35 to Newcastle. It is shown as Friday Only, Not Advertised, 11 May to 8 June and 14 September to 5 October: it was a S.A.G.A (Senior Citizens) special.
On Saturdays 7 May to 29 September there were just:
1S31 07.55 Taunton-Edinburgh
1S27 07.25 Plymouth-Edinburgh
1S19 21.00 Bristol-Glasgow
