Looking at the photo, I wondered if somebody who didn’t know about mushrooms had found it, would they have called the police? The police would take one look at it and call bomb-disposal, but the UFO-hunters who listen in would all descend on the field. Following a tense stand-off there would be a controlled explosion and…a mushroom cloud.

Another Christmas staple from the Guardian:
Ho-ho-no! Children in tears after vicar tells them Santa is not real
The traumatised students (sic) were aged 10-11 (year 6). I particularly enjoyed the grovelling response from the Diocese:

After talking about the nativity story from the Bible, he made some comments about the existence of Father Christmas.
[He] has accepted that this was an error of judgment, and he should not have done so. He apologised unreservedly to the school, to the parents and to the children, and the headteacher immediately wrote to all parents to explain this.
The school and diocese have worked together to address this issue, and the headteacher has now written to parents a second time, sending them Paul’s apology.

I think if they're traumatised at this news at that age, something's gone a bit wrong. Everyone knows that you only start believing in Santa when you start needing him to do your Christmas shopping... I know I did, everyone on my list got New Year's presents last year!

The BBC article here has the following:

One parent told the newspaper: "I don't know how it can be undone, but I think it's absolutely disgusting.

"I don't want him anywhere near my daughter. I hope he never comes into the school again."
I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

I remember in Year 6 the annual visit by "Father Christmas" of my primary school occurred was a memorable one, where he visited each year and pupils were allowed to ask him questions. By this age not only did we all not believe in Santa, most of us knew the individual under the disguise (he was from the neighbouring Church and his voice gave it away). One of my class even asked the question "Can you take your hat off?" He got a resounding no.

From the BBC:
‘The sale of Royal Mail's parent company to a Czech billionaire has been approved by the government.’

Without discussing the rights & wrongs, pros & cons of this, one condition of the sale caught my eye.

Has anyone told them that 2025 is only two weeks away?

Deer invades pitch and tackles rugby player
BBC News

A rugby player ended up on the ground when a muntjac invaded the pitch and sent him flying.
It happened during Saturday's Buckinghamshire derby between Aylesbury and Marlow in a London and South East Division league match.
The deer sprinted on and hit a Marlow player. Both the player and the muntjac were said to be unharmed.
Marlow went on to win the game against Rams 19-17.

It's rare that a news story will make me laugh but I think this one is quite good...

'Stop sticking googly eyes on sculptures' - US city tells residents

A city council in the US has asked people to stop sticking plastic eyes onto sculptures around the city, saying it costs a lot to remove them.
The googly eyes appeared on a number of artworks around the city of Bend, in Oregon, including a statue of two deer and a metal sphere.
In a post on social media, the council asked whoever was responsible to cut it out.
"While the googly eyes placed on the various art pieces around town might give you a chuckle, it costs money to remove them with care to not damage the art," it said.

'I drunkenly bought a Santa taller than my house'
BBC News - N Yorks
A man's drunken mistake has led to a beloved Christmas tradition in a North Yorkshire village.
Peter Routledge was shopping online after a festive session four years ago and quickly realised he'd made a huge error.
He'd purchased an inflatable Santa that is actually bigger than his house in Poppleton.
It quickly became the talk of the village but now Mr Routledge, along with his wife Katy, uses the decoration as a force for good.
Mrs Routledge said: "It brings so much happiness to the village and a lot to people in York as well. He's also done some good work for charities and we also collect food for a local food bank."

New Year's Day. 12:00. If you live near a heritage railway, expect a bit of a whistle.
Heritage locomotives across the south of England will be joining in a worldwide "whistle-up" to mark 200 years of passenger rail travel.

Meet the man who busks from inside a litter bin
Charles Cavey, better to known to locals as The Singing Binman, has been performing on one of Cambridge's busiest streets for over 25 years.
He first got the idea while working for a punting company.
Seeing a bin being emptied in a lorry, he thought to himself "I can fit in there".
He subsequently sourced and converted his own bin to perform in and has since auditioned on Britain's Got Talent, been requested for weddings and even featured on Tyson Fury's Instagram.

Magnus Carlsen quits chess championship after being told to change jeans
BBC News
World chess number one Magnus Carlsen has quit a major tournament after being told he could not carry on playing while wearing jeans.
The chess great had been defending his titles at the Fide World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in New York when officials made the request.
The grandmaster said he had offered to change his trousers for the next day, but was fined and told he needed to change immediately.
The chess federation (Fide) said its dress code regulations were designed to "ensure fairness and professionalism for all participants".
Carlsen is a high-profile figure in chess who has attracted some controversy in recent years.
Last year, he settled a long-running legal dispute after accusing a rival of cheating in a tournament.
On Friday he pulled out of the championships for the short form versions of the game due to the dress altercation. Carlsen had been both the reigning Blitz and Rapid Chess champions.
He added he wouldn't be appealing the decision, saying: "Honestly, I am too old at this point to care too much."

Can't help but think of the long-ago celebrated, almost unbeatable, chess master -- forget his name: he was a citizen of the USSR, from one of the non-Russian constituent republics; unpronounceable name. Worked on the principle of "win at all costs"; including engaging in various disgusting and off-putting (but short of obscene) physical doings, to disconcert and mentally mess with his opponent. One has to feel that this puts in-comparison minor sartorial stuff, totally in the shade.
