They got taken over by some private equity firm which has, as often happens in this instance, been stripped down and have already reported big losses this year:
Morrisons, which was bought by Clayton Dubilier & Rice for £7bn in October 2021 after a fierce bidding war, has found life as a private company hard.

If/when they collapse I hope there is a serious discussion about the role this business venture plays and whether it should be outlawed/tightly regulated.
Indeed these firms asset strip. They do not see a business providing a service BUT just see the value of the assets not the ongoing profit they could/should provide.
One would hope that customers would just walk away. I considered it BUT it is my nearest supermarket (I can walk to it) and was quite nice.
Makes me wonder - have the staff been stitched up by the Morrison family in a similar way that the Wilkinson family allegedly did ?.
Apparently Manchester United Football team is effectively bankrupt thanks to the Glazer brothers.
We really ought to be favouring the Co-op, Waitrose and John Lewis as these are partnerships owned by the staff aiui.
(que a new thread).
I think the Wimbledon one is your nearest, then?
Wimbledon is probably next nearest - that is apart from my very local Croydon one. My search started because I used to go to the Sutton branch if there was an offer that might still be in stock over there or I was over that way anyway. My research started bacause I heard that there were for sale/lease signs up on the Sutton site.
My next research will be over Bromley way - one long bus ride.
Have over 60s Oyster so will travel !.
I thought daily checks had to be made of fridge/freezer temperatures? Unless of course the thermometer is also faulty...
I think that is correct. Certainly in food catering. More likely than a faulty thermometer is a lack of training or motivation to do it properly.
Used our local Morrisons on Friday and the wet fish counter was closed. Very little seafood/fish in the cabinets either. I hope that’s a one-off.
Our Croydon branch was supposed to loose all its fresh counters. That rumour was doing the rounds about a year ago and makes sense as asset stripping means getting rid of the expensive nice to haves.
Is that the one at the top of the high street that used to be (I think) a Safeway back in the '90s?
Yes, that is the one.
I am wondering if it is the ex Safeway ones that are succumbing. I expect it is just e looking for a non-existent pattern.
