Sad times. 250 never had a issue with, like with any 150’s, I wish TFW used them for support on Birmingham when 158’s were short recently.. I get they aren’t as fast but 4 coaches always better than 2.

Whats train crew competence like up there? Some north depots are loosing competence on the 150s.

I’m not sure how a 150 which is due overhaul is any use for a current fleet shortage around Birmingham, it would take several months for the overhaul to be completed.

The overhauls the 150s are due are a hard stop like an MOT on a car.

I suspect Jake means the 150s that are still in service. It was a daily occurrence until around April. The best hope now is class 197s being signed off to Birmingham. If class 756 diagrams ramp up in December, there will be 150s to cover 197s in south Wales.

Believe the plan is to try and use pairs of 153s to strengthen the 158s on Birminghams with 150s backfilling on the valleys/south wales as and when they get displaced by 756s.

Yes you’re correct.

Issue with 150/153s going to Birmingham is Mach crews don't sign either - they only sign 158s - therefore if a service has something other than 158 in the consist and is supposed to be worked by a Mach crew then it has to be covered by Shrewsbury/Crewe/Chester staff which is heavily dependent on spares being available to cover on the day.

I noticed a 158 was covering a Cardiff to Milford service this morning. Quite a surprise to see this as I thought any available 158s would be for the Cambrian at the moment. It looks like the 158 covered the diagram all day and did the 1730 Manchester-Cardiff. A popular one to be subbed for a Sprinter as it starts and ends in Canton.

I also noticed a 4 car combination of a 150 and 2 153s on 0652 Carmarthen to Cardiff, obviously to send the Sprinters that have been covering various services in the West back to Cardiff. It must have been a nice surprise for commuters to have 4 carriages even if it was Sprinters.

There was also a 150 on the 15:19 Heart of Wales departure from Shrewsbury today.

I think it has just returned from its major overhaul so will be moved north, probably tomorrow, to boost the Cambrian services.

I can guarantee it was 150217 as it passed me at Leominster signal box, even though on TRUST it's 158836 and it's registered as 150217 on the GSMR

Will that need to be swapped at Chester as I didn't think the North Wales depots signed 150s anymore?

Interesting, it's showing the 158 allocated to go to Birmingham and then down the Cambrian...
It does seem to be swapped off at Chester though

It's a little complicated. Crewe and Shrewsbury are the only depots in the North that will be retaining 150 & 153 knowledge for now, at the others it will drop off traincrew's cards when they go so long without working them. There's still probably a few crews left who have worked them recently enough that they're still competent, but that number is falling.

150s will also drop off Shrewsbury and Crewe cards at a later date, but 153s are currently planned to remain in the longer term.

RTT has updated now to show the 150 did Cardiff-Chester. I wonder what the plan is for the 150 now, back down to Cardiff?

I had a feeling the North depots like Llandudno Junction and Chester would lose their competency on 150s. Its been so long since ive heard of one up that way.

I guess 150s will need to be kept for Crewe incase they end up on HOWL or Crewe Locals for now.

150250 was due to be withdrawn by the end of the year, and was last recorded at Cardiff Queen Street on the 19th. Trainlogger has it at Landore if that helps

Did this move happen please?
It did, as far as I know that’s the last one before 2025.

Any news on the 150’s at Landore being taken to Sims or are they still there?

I travelled on 150231 on Tuesday and Wednesday on the 12:19 Crewe to Shrewsbury service. 2K55. Good to travel on a 150 before they go.

Are all the TfW 150s going straight to scrap? Is there are chance some could cascade elsewhere, say Northern? I guess probably not.

They're having useful spares taken off them first. The lease company that own the vehicles are scrapping them, not the train operating companies, because it would cost too much to keep them running. Remember they are nearly 40 years old

Hopefully clearance for 'the English end' of the Birmingham route should be relatively easy given that 196s are cleared between Salop and Brum. Are there any big issues for the rest of it?

I remember progressing materials for Class 150 bogies. It seems a lifetime ago.
It was almost half an average lifetime scarily.... I remember how modern the 150s seemed when they were first introduced.

The big laugh I had with the 150/2s, was when York Works rang Derby Loco up, and asked about progress on the bogies. Bodyshells were ready. No-one had actually told Derby Loco to build the bogies. Soon got them underway with a bit of overtime thrown in.
