A recent discussion of Glasgow-Leeds services via the Settle and Carlisle happened to coincide with engineering diversions of LNER services via Carlisle and back across to Newcastle. While obviously much slower for Edinburgh-London, it struck me that for passengers wanting an Inter-City standard service from, say, Carlisle to Doncaster etc., such a route would be oddly convenient
So, which other regular diversion routes used during engineering work would merit regular passenger services? I'll start with ECML diversions via Cambridge, to remove the need for changing via the odious XC service to Peterborough.
