I can't see your problem, it shares the 2 route briefly after Surgeon’s and crosses it again later. With haymarket becoming such an important area, it seems a sensible destination. I would extend it from Holyrood Gait round to the front of the parliament .
To be honest I think they’ve looked at the length of the originally proposed 13 route and realised it would’ve been too short on its own had it stopped at say, Tollcross. I think it would’ve been more useful for it to run into the core of the city centre, ie Hanover Street after serving Bristo Square. This would be less of an issue of unnecessary duplication and offer much more useful connections.

The 2 and 12 both already connect Haymarket with Tollcross, Bristo Square and Surgeons’ Hall; between the two of them anyway. I just don’t see what benefit it brings compared to what is already offered.

The bus stop at the parliament is long gone and the road markings removed. So I think any chance that comes back is very low. I think they’ve done the sensible thing with it turning at Dynamic Earth.

Does the 60 go into the Dumbiedykes estate like it did way back about 40 years ago or just serve Holyrood Road. Its a shame Lothian couldn't have just rerouted the 45 to cover this if it was the latter.

That’s the aspiration, however there isn’t really anywhere to safely turn a bus within the estate so unless that were to change it’ll likely remain on Holyrood Road.

A link to to the map of the route is on one of the links earlier in this thread. It stays on Holyrood Road.

When Edinburgh Corporation started the 60 in 1973 it very briefly went into the Dumbiedykes, turning in Viewcraig Street, before changing to a one-way loop (from town via Canongate, to town via Holyrood Road). Viewcraig Street was more recently used as the 60's terminus from 2002 until 2009.

For a spell during the 1990s and up to 2002, the 60 turned at the south end of Dumbiedykes Road.

Lothian did run the 45 via Holyrood Road at one time, from June 1980 until deregulation in October 1986.

Too many cars in Dumbiedykes I imagine to turn anything safely even a Seddon Pennine midibus.

Full details of the new Midland Bluebird routes 13 and 60 are now available on their website/app.

From the 2nd of December 2024 we will be operating service 13 on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council. The route and timetable will be similar to the current service, but we would encourage customers to view our information online or look out for our leaflets which we will shortly be distributing.

We will commence the operation of this service on behalf of City of Edinburgh Council. The new route will link the Dumbiedykes area with Surgeons Hall, Tollcross & Haymarket, please view the map and timetable on line or look out for our leaflets.
This is cool to see. I probably won’t use the website to see the timetables (I’m fine sticking with bustimes, thanks), but nice that it’s finally been officially announced.

A very strange route either way with much duplication with the existing Lothian 2.
It’s only the same route as the 2 for 6min towards Holyrood & 8min towards Haymarket, so I kinda see your point, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t make all that much sense. Sure, you could make the argument that it is only 20min to Holyroof & 21min to Haymarket, but I don’t think the residents of Dumbiedykes will care, I think they’ll mainly be pleased to finally have a bus link up to Surgeons Hall for the first time in nearly half a decade.

The timetable for the 13 has a blinding error. On journeys towards Craigleith, Broughton is shown twice rather than Ravelston.
Yeah, that is odd. Nothing too surprising though, seen timetable misprints many a time.

I also wish that all journeys on the Saturday timetable were shown. There is enough space.
Doesn’t really matter too much, you can just go off when it should usually depart at the hours which the specific journey is timed to depart & then replace the hour with the current hour.

So I found this on Bustimes also..
So now the 3 routes are under both ABDC & BRBU. Right…

I completely agree for everything other than your reasoning for the 60 going to Haymarket. Yes, it is a growing area, but as only reason I see for the connection is to maybe provide a link to a train station, but it doesn’t even go all the way to the station.

To be honest I think they’ve looked at the length of the originally proposed 13 route and realised it would’ve been too short on its own had it stopped at say, Tollcross. I think it would’ve been more useful for it to run into the core of the city centre, ie Hanover Street after serving Bristo Square. This is true.

I think acting like the 60 should be rerouted due to several similarities to the 2 is definitely a bit of an exaggeration, but you do have a fair point in regards to the links to Haymarket. I do think maybe a slight reroute after Tollcross would be cool, but I think that the priority should be making sure Dumbiedykes have a bus route, which they’ve so managed to get done. Let’s just hope McGills play their part & actually run it well.

The bus stop at the parliament is long gone and the road markings removed. So I think any chance that comes back is very low. I think they’ve done the sensible thing with it turning at Dynamic Earth.
I agree, the road has also gotten much busier, & I think that, what with the blind corner, reintroducing it wouldn’t be great unless they did some landscaping works to seperate the stop from where drivers will usually run down.

It would be cool if so, but sadly not.

Is there pedestrian access from the Dynamic Earth side into the Parliament? Or do you have to go up Reids close to the Cannongate?
And why doesn't it go to Tollcross, down Lothian Road and use the Approach road and Morrison Link?

The duties will probably be shared with the airport service so will likely shift around with a van in the city centre to get changing drivers where they need to be.

I wonder where crew reliefs will take place on the 13 and 60 given how remote they are from Deans Depot.
The 13 reliefs will be at Hanover Street, which is just a short walk from the bothy on the same street.
The 60 reliefs will be done at Torphichen Street.

There's pedestrian access through to Horse Wynd and the main entrance to Parliament.

There is a new X39 service from Dean's depot (starting to coincide with the 13 &60) 3 journeys in to Edinburgh in morning, 3 out in evening - first and last from Lochend so presumably positioning journeys for the 13, there is also a pm journey starting from Haymarket in the afternoon, presumably coming off the last 60

As someone else already said, I imagine driver changes will be in the city centre.

Won't be nearly as well. Run by mcgills. Can see it being so underused that they can no longer justify it or them removing the service from them and re-tendering it.

I still think Lothian would of been a better option for both services, or at least just the 13, no idea how well the 60 would of done regardless of operator.

I seem to recall Edinburgh Coach Lines were struggling to keep vehicles going to the extent where they had to put coaches on the 13. They have had no spare service buses for some time now when they could have picked something up.

Meanwhile McGill's have the capacity to get buses when required so the idea of the service being somewhat deterioated because of the change of operator is rather baffling when they have been preparing well for the new work.

Also of note it doesn't seem like ECL even mentioned anywhere regarding the change of operator, I checked their website and Facebook and there was nothing of note.

Last I recall there should be some courtesy advising passengers of the change of operator from a certain date, it doesn't seem like they have wanted to mention it despite running it for 15 years.

If you are not happy you are always welcome to come up with the funds to get an operator's license and start bidding for work. It's not as easy as you think it is, especially with the ever-increasing requirements!

They have posted a thank you message on Facebook today.

Slightly dissapointing that the Midland Bluebird app isn't showing icons for where buses on service 13 are. Live tracking is a definite improvement, but not having any indication of where the bus is could be improved. The other services on the app seem to be working fine so I'm not sure why.

They’re showing okay now. 0411 & 0480 doing the honours on the 13 with 0449 on the 60.
Must’ve needed a reboot! ;)

Great! glad it's working now. Will be interesting to see how the WFs compare with the DFs as the DFs are bigger, and in my opinion more suited to the 13 than the 60. The 13 rarely has full loadings, but I would say it's still worthy of longer buses than the WFs.

I would personally also say that the Streetlites are a downgrade from the newer and more comfortable buses (Evora 642 and E200MMC 643) which ECL used on the route, however the Streetlites are really quite well presented in the new Midland Bluebird livery and I'm hopeful that McGill's will prove that they can run it well despite their somewhat poor reputation and give service 13 a bright future.

Spotted a 13 in Bright Bus AirPort Express livery today. A change from the occasional CityLink livery under Edinburgh Coach Lines.

I hope that was genuinely just covering for a breakdown or similar and that they hadn't unleashed a street lite on airport customers, I mean I know the bright bus service is meant to be a budget option but there are limits

The Enviro 300 on the 13 was allocated for the whole day, starting on the X39, probably because two streetlite's are unavailable.
The AIRX was fine because of the extra Enviro 400 MMC which often operates on it.

Cheers. Didn't I realise that they had an MMC operating frequently on the airport Express, whilst I use it every time I come up I've only ever had a single decks.

Does anyone know how busy the new Edinburgh routes have been?

(13, 20, 32, 60, 68, 69, 70, 71)

I've seen a few busy 32's during the day but nothing crazy, the 13 looks no busier than before, the 60 looks dead, and I can't comment on the other services.
