In recent months Northern have been cancelling many services across the North, very many of them on hourly services.
I came across two travellers this morning who'd purchased tickets for services that had been cancelled, next train an hour later. Both arrived over 15 minutes before their train was due to depart.
The first was a lady who shrugged her shoulders and made comment about it ruining her leisure plans for the day - yet again. She went home and would not travel later. I doubt she'd have the patience to go through the Delay Repay palava for a relatively small amount.
The second was going to an appointment in Manchester and was going to be late. English was not his first language. A relative had bought his ticket for him using his phone and the Northern app. I tried to show him how to claim once he got to Manchester and he may have done so.
However I can't help wondering how many occasional travellers claim delay repay? I suspect a lot don't.
Secondly I wonder how much effect this is having on Northern's ticketing revenue?
(My son should be getting a refund for a 31 minute delay on a LNER journey on Sunday. He's a regular traveller and knows how to claim - as it seemed did all in his carriage as they willed the train to lose a further 2 minutes to trigger 50%.)
