In recent months Northern have been cancelling many services across the North, very many of them on hourly services.

I came across two travellers this morning who'd purchased tickets for services that had been cancelled, next train an hour later. Both arrived over 15 minutes before their train was due to depart.

The first was a lady who shrugged her shoulders and made comment about it ruining her leisure plans for the day - yet again. She went home and would not travel later. I doubt she'd have the patience to go through the Delay Repay palava for a relatively small amount.

The second was going to an appointment in Manchester and was going to be late. English was not his first language. A relative had bought his ticket for him using his phone and the Northern app. I tried to show him how to claim once he got to Manchester and he may have done so.

However I can't help wondering how many occasional travellers claim delay repay? I suspect a lot don't.

Secondly I wonder how much effect this is having on Northern's ticketing revenue?

(My son should be getting a refund for a 31 minute delay on a LNER journey on Sunday. He's a regular traveller and knows how to claim - as it seemed did all in his carriage as they willed the train to lose a further 2 minutes to trigger 50%.)

About half of rail passengers claim delay repay: https://www.transportfocus.org.uk/blog/make-delay-pay-more-passengers-claiming-compensation/

Delay Repay would not be appropriate for this; a refund from the retailer would need to be sought.

Indeed - sounds like the lady in question will do the British thing of cutting her losses and ignoring it in an attempt to make it go away. Must be a good number of people who do that.

That's very true but is certainly not restricted to railway refunds and compensation.

I put in a claim after a cancelled train delayed me 45 minutes last Weds. Yesterday I had an email from Northern apologising for the delay in processing my claim due to a high volume of claims currently. Which shows that a good proportion of people are making use of the delay repay function.

I’ll get my 93p eventually!

It only really shows that whatever number of claims they have, they do not have the right level of resource to process them.

Most (all?) TOCs publish figures on the number of claims they handle so it ispossible to get an idea of how much variation there is from month to month.

As I said in another thread that week, I had my train home from Manchester Piccadilly to Heaton Chapel cancelled. The next one was almost an hour later (23.06 instead of 22.11).

I did take the trouble to claim Delay Repay, and did get half my fare back. It was for the principle of not being allowed to get home when I wanted and was getting tired, rather than the £1 Delay Repay (I was on a £2 Advance fare).

Besides, I have not forgotten how Northern declined my £48 Delay Repay claim for a delay of nearly 3 hours in 2022.
