Hotel bedrooms overlooking busy railway stations

Quite a few reviews of the Travel Lodge at Kings Cross mention the noise of trains.

I'm not sure if the trains are visible too
I think that's the one I stayed at some years ago, with a room overlooking one of the short open-air sections of the Widened Lines. Hot night and no aircon, so choice between baking or being woken every couple of minutes by a train bursting out of the tunnel and disappearing into the next one. I stayed up until the last train and was woken by the first one, but I think it was then cool enough to close the window and get a couple more hours kip.

Park Plaza Waterloo has excellent views of the approaches to (unsurprisingly) Waterloo if you're the correct side of the the hotel.

I’m currently in the Travelodge. Rooms only go up to the 3rd floor.

From the 2nd floor you can see the top half of trains passing by on the near side of the viaduct.
There are five floors at the Holiday Inn at Stockport, where I am a regular guest. Have occupied most levels during my stays there, fortunately mainly on the west side. The upper floors give a panoramic view of the whole station and beyond, the lower floors are better for platform and train activity. The view along the viaduct is impressive. Even the higher up south facing rooms get the platform ends which look good at night.

A bit off topic, but you can see trains from Bask opposite the hotel, while simultaneously enjoying 100 decibel music even at 2pm on a weekday :D

The Moxy in Stratford directly faces the Great Eastern Main Lines and Central line tracks as they head into the tunnels out east. There’s a great view of the eastern side of Stratford station and the wider Stratford City area.

Station announcements and the trains are heard easily when the window is open. Although the windows are pretty soundproof, they provide earplugs in each room to mitigate the noise (especially during Central line night tube!!). Some rooms even have window ledges which are slanted to give a better view of tracks & station.

I stayed at Travelodge, Acton which is near North Acton station and offered good views of the Central Line trains.

I later stayed at Holiday Inn Express, slightly nearer the station but was not given such scenic views. ;)

Alp Grüm works for me. With two trains an hour and some Bernina express trains in between, t is not exactly a busy railway station. But you get a nice view of the station or the southbound line, depending on which side your room is on. No road, so it is nice and quiet after the last train left. Some rather noisy snow blowers might turn up in the morning.

Forgot to add but I'm staying in a hotel next week which I think has rooms above the tracks of a busy railway station.
Will try to get a photo.

Corrour Station House, Signalbox.

Views are sensational, and very close to the trains.

Guildford Travelodge has a good view of the railway line, if you get the right side of the building and the top floor. Also found it a great way to relax at night, listening to the 450s and 455s whine past and all the clickety clacks!

Bear with me....

The Hampton by Hilton is next to Luton Airport Parkway
- You'd need to ask for a room on the right side, but many are
- I was really lucky and saw a steam train go past - this is very unusual there!
- There are four lines - two run EMR, two run Thameslink (fast and slow trains)
- If a broader transport fan, you can also see plenty of planes given proximity to the airport

Elite Hotel Acedemia next to Uppsala station in Sweden has some great views if you're in the south-eastern facing rooms, (with full height windows too).

I've stayed here many times, its excellent.

How things change. That is where the Ford dealership - Grays of Guildford - used to be. The Dad of one of my friends worked there!

I‘ve stayed at the Ibis (styles & budget) that overlooks the lines into Mulhouse station in Alsace, France. Additionally, there is the Premier Inn in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) which overlooks the approach into Freiburg Hbf and the depot nearby.
(First photo: view of approach into Mulhouse station from the Ibis, Second photo: view of premier inn Freiburg from a train)

Even if you can't see the trains you can hear the class 67's!

Not busy but can be a loud when a train comes through. I travel to a hospital in Windsor every month or so, and generally stay in the Travelodge adjoining it. From some of the accessible rooms, the unpleasant parts of the station can be seen and heard.

Oh well. At least (a) a cheap night's stay on company expenses and (b) as a writer of steampunk fantasy where people often use trains in an unorthodox fashion, I get to see the workings of the station that you don't often see.

Hotel with regular fast trains? What about 'The Sidings' at Shipton, north of York? If the OPs grandson loves trains, he'll be in heaven there!

Japan is excellent for such.

Here is the view from my room tonight in Okayama. Weather dismal but you get the idea!

I used to stay at The Patten Arms hotel in Warrington during the last days of the Class 40's. Depending on which room you had there was good views of either the station ( Bank Quay) and freight only lines. Used to try and sleep although a class 40 whistling somewhere made it difficult! Happy days.

Just tried to book sleeperz in Dundee for next March and they want £280 for 3 nights! Needless to say I've booked a Travelodge instead for less than £100...
