It's a weird one as it doesn't show up all the time but it's available to book on the XC app.

Indeed-and it's not the only instance.
If it doesn't run through it's an easy change at Waverley at that hour, and you'll be in Glasgow around the same time-the journey to Queen St being shorter

That journey time doesn't help me and probably the majority of people wanting to go to Glasgow earlier.

Could you see Lumo or another new operator coming in to take on this route?

Aren't Lumo planning to do this?

I get you can change at Edinburgh but there is a convenience in a direct service.

Someone doing this on a regular basis would be ideal as I'm going to be heading down there a lot and the fewer connections the better. I'm off there in a couple of weeks again and I'm doing Queen Street - Waverley - York - Leeds which is far from ideal.

I think the prevalence of the multiple connections to Glasgow mean most TOC's are happy to stop at Edinburgh. My train home is from Central so for selfish reasons I would love to see someone offer a regular through service.

Electrification of Carstairs to Edinburgh was done following ECML electrification in the early 90s.

And the Inter City East Coast trains ran that way as they didnt fit in Queen St platforms. There did used to be an HST into Queen St pre electrification, but it stuck out into the throat (even the tunnel, I think) and blocked multiple platforms. Also the service into Queen St was rather less than it is now.

The only platform that could take an HST at Queen Street was 7. There was one incident where it was put into another platform with predictable consequences…..
