I'm intrigued what diversions GWR would be likely to do using EWR, as they'd be incredibly roundabout if they were for instance going to Euston via Oxford and a reverse at Milton Keynes Central - you'd be adding on probably nearly two hours. Or is this on behalf of Avanti who might well want to send their 805s on a blockade buster run into Paddington once in a while?
I’m assuming it’s simply testing for gauge clearance of all IET varieties. Doesn’t mean any diversions over the route are planned at this stage.

There are three 196/0s that are now off-lease (or suchlike so maybe just out of use) from WMT. Those would be available to testing/training on the route and they are finally meant for that route.
No Chiltern staff have yet been trained on 196s

Is ASLEF on board with that or are we going to see Industrial action about this?
What would ASLEF have to do with it? More likely RMT would be against any extension of DOO operation.

This is not the case. Even where the dimensions are identical, Network Rail requires them all to be cleared separately. Whatever 800005 was doing was solely for GWR. Clearing 800s does not clear 805s for Avanti.
No Chiltern staff have yet been trained on 196s
This explains 168s though, even if they never operate in service

Scope for diverting the Avanti 80x into Paddington during Euston works?
Possibly, or at least to Oxford for onward connections. IETs need to be passed for the EWR route before any such diversions can even be considered.

Don't ASLEF also have a general anti-DOO position? If the drivers refuse then the trains won't be going anywhere, whereas withdrawing your labour from a train you're not on doesn't really have much effect.

As described above, these 168s are running for GSM-R testing only. The fact that it gives Chiltern drivers some familiarity with the route is a bonus.

No. there will be no dissent from ASLEF if EWR runs DOO. However the method of operation has yet to be decided.

Could be a dry run for a tour of dignitaries on it - a line reopening is a big deal - and a 2-car DMU wouldn't really cut it.
Any chance of a Class 91 making it to Ashington for the Northumberland Line's opening? :D

Has there been any indication that 150s will be tested on Bletchley – Oxford, or will they stay east of the WCML?

Why would 150s be tested west of Bletchley?

In retrospect I can see why that question doesn't make sense. I thought they might provide Bedford – Oxford services but LNR only has three of them and I think they're two carriages when all of the EWR test trains today have four, so they're probably too low-capacity (and too old to be desirable) for EWR plans outside current use.

Supposed to be 6 x 196/0 for EWR services.

Amused to see in the video that the Class 168 said "Merry Christmas" on its destination indicator. That would have been more appropriate for the following Class 800 coming from North Pole depot.

Just thrilled really to see this day when a passenger train has travelled from Oxford to Milton Keynes direct. Ok, it probably won't see any walk-up fare paying passengers for 9 months, but this is good.

Could have been worse. I believe Chiltern's PIS has codes for Coventry, Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street too! And, of course, there's the code for Sheffield Victoria that was put in for the last day of the West Ealing - West Ruislip parly.

I have driven along the A413 at Winslow many times in the past and looked down from the bridge over the "railway" at the sodden mass of overgrown vegetation, pools of water and barely visible rusty rails wondering if it would ever see a functioning railway again. I have also walked over the footpath crossing the line at Verney Junction, remembering the services that used to run from it - including Pullman Coaches to Baker Street - not really imagining anything could ever run through it again.

I now live many miles from there, but it still gives me (yes) such a thrill seeing a real live train running on pristine permanent way and a brand new station at Winslow itself. Wow...

I shall be watching Tuesday's paths like a hawk. Not at work Tuesday, so, if TRUST activates, I'll make the journey up from the south coast...

And great to see the 84C depot code (Banbury) attached to the front. Bit of depot pride and history!

Test trains do not provide any indication of service train lengths once passenger trains start running.

The possible lengths are 2 and 4 with the 196s, I think it'll be a mix (though if only three units are being sent over to start with then it'll probably be 2 all the time at the start). However the 150s definitely will not be used.

It’ll be difficult to sustain a 30-minute frequency with 4-car formations.

If you look at the ghost timetable there is a requirement for 4 trains in service. For the start of service they will have 6 2-car units which means that they will have 2 units spare to cover faults, maintenance etc.

Why is Chiltern testing with 4 car and/or 2 x 2 car units?

It corresponds with what they will be running in service? (Class 196)
The 196s they will be using are 2 car units (probably 196007 - 196012).

With 4 trains in service and 6 units available that infers a 2car service with 2 units as spare/maintenance (that is what I read into the above posts).

Post #1939 ties in with your predicted units.

4 Cars used as the intermediate cabs can be used for test equipment. The luxury not there on Wednesday, as there is a 2 car limit for shunts so just a 2 car 168 will be used with test equipment needing to be moved between cabs.

Just to tidy things up a bit (and suggested by @D365), there’s a new thread discussing what’s currently happening with test running here:

Might be of interest to those following this thread but a consultation is going to be opening soon about East West Rail see this thread.
