Yesterday I travelled from Stoke-on-Trent to Nottingham departing from Stoke at 0633, returning from Nottingham at 1816.
At Stoke station I asked for a day return with a senior railcard. I was sold an anytime return at a cost of £20.55. I asked for this to be checked and was told that the ticket was correct and no day return fare existed for my journey. I have tried to check on the National Rail Enquiries site which informs me that my journey is not possible. Yesterday when I tried to check this fare all I got was fares for journeys via Nuneaton and Leicester.

Does anyone know if I did indeed pay the right fare for my journey?

You paid the right fare for your journey.
If travelling from Stoke-on-Trent to/from Nottingham via Derby, might a modest saving have perhaps been made by splitting at Derby, using Anytime Day Return tickets?

Try splitting at Long Eaton.

£11.55 for Stoke - Long Eaton SDR
£4.05 for a Long Eaton - Nottingham SDR

Both prices with the Senior Railcard

Stoke-on-Trent to Nottingham is just over 50 miles (each way). Might that threshold have anything to do with the absence of both Anytime and Off Peak day returns?

Possibly, but there are no hard and fast rules.

Glasgow to Mallaig (150 miles), Liverpool to Brighton (285 miles) and Penzance to London (304 miles) all have day return or day Travelcard fares available, for example ;)

Splitting at Blythe Bridge seems marginally better.
£3.05 Stoke - Blythe Bridge SDR
£12.30 Blythe Bridge - Nottingham SDR

Rather than trying lots of different split points manually, which could be time consuming, it may be worth considering using our ticketing site?

Our site should come up with the best splits.

Also a small proportion of the revenue goes towards the upkeep of this forum :)

If it ever doesn't find the cheapest combination for any journey, please let me know by sending me a direct message, and I will get someone to look into it.
