Yes, that can be done using a Ffestiniog Round Robin ticket, costs £44.30 from Crewe, assumes/requires that all the travel is undertaken on the same day.
It is a pity that there isn't an equivalent Welsh Highland Round Robin.

Pricing..is a senior railcard fare possible?..I guess you simply get on a train to Bleanau from Portmadog, assuming walk-ons still possible, and the Ffestiniog is running on your chosen date!!

It certainly shows as an option on BRFares. You are advised to call the Porthmadog booking office in advance to book, but turning up and travelling is generally available too.

Should be £29.20 from Crewe with Senior Railcard discount.

Would require a rather early doors start from Crewe to have any chance of making the 1010 Welsh Highland Railway departure from Caernarfon. Also, reckon you'd have to pay quite a bit more for the round trip than £44.30 or £29.20.

In the early days of the N Wales Rover and the WHR, so about 10 years ago, it allowed you half fare travel on the WHR (one way, and not exactly cheap) and FR.
I don't know when that ceased, as I haven't used one for some years.

Great, thanks! Anyone got an idea of price from Birmingham New Street? Assume it's a bit more!

I can't find a website for it, but as close as I can find the Giant's Causeway and Bushmills Railway is £8 return for 2 miles. No fares available for the Downpatrick and County Down Railway either, due to flooding last November.

Looking further away from GB, how common is it for US preserved railways/roads to offer excursions rather than the public-transport-lite service? That seems to be the case for the Durango and Silvertown Railroad at least, with 5-hour excursions from $89 / £67 and 9-hour ones from $97 / £73 (which doesn't seem quite as steep considering it's for a line the length of the West Somerset and Welsh Highland Railways combined).

I don't think it counts as a heritage railway, but Interlaken – Jungfraujoch and back is CHF 99 / £88 with a GA Travelcard, CHF 112 / £100 with a half-fare card, CHF 148 / £132 with a Swiss Travel or Interrail pass, and CHF 224 / £200 without any discounts, for a journey which I think is about twenty miles each way. In other words, at least £2.20 per mile, and £2.50-£5 per mile for most foreign visitors. The most surprising bit of that to me is that, per mile rather than in absolute terms, it's cheaper than the Snowdon Mountain Railway.

The prices in the RH&DR are currently at the moment
£28 for adult rover, £14 for child 3-15 and children under 3 are free. That works out at £1 per mile and 50p per mile.
You can pay on the day or in advance, we very much take cash as well as card, and you can get a single or return to any of the stations on the line.
And national rail priv card is currently £7
