Would "2 trains on the same platform" work in the UK?

Have a look at Leeds and the track layout there. They have A B C and D zones for each of the through platforms, with crossovers mid way down the platform to enable various clever overtaking and passing moves.

We had a thread on this last year. The point about what the French have done (e.g. at Rennes) is that it is fully signalled, whereas permissive sharing used to need a lot of staff time under their rules and didn't increase capacity much. So where the alternative is to build more platforms and lines, even an expensive new signalling system is cheap!

There are many stations where trains depart in opposite directions from the same platform. Here in the South East I have seen-
Tonbridge platform 1 trains depart towards Redhill and Paddock Wood/Medway Valley line.
Ashford platform 1 trains depart for Hastings and London via Tonbridge or Maidstone East
Ashford platform 6 trains depart for Canterbury West line or Maidstone East line.
Redhill platform 1 trains depart for Tonbridge or Reigate/Guildford line or Gatwick Airport

Gloucester springs to mind, albeit numbered separately. They'll often be something in P1 and a Cardiff bound train will come past it and into P2

Those are closing up signals which reduce platform re-occupation time and therefore headways. Nothing to do with platform sharing even though they look the same as any other signal.
It is possible for two trains to be occupying P13 or P14 at Piccadilly, but highly undesirable as it leads to a stampede of people waiting at the departure end when they think their train is about to leave from the other end.

If trains depart in opposite directions from here then there will be a bit of a problem...
Trains to Tonbridge go east, Trains to Reigate line go west, trains to Gatwick Airport go south so geographically in different directions

They all go south; none go north (there is a buffer stop). It's no different from a terminus platform where multiple trains going to different locations can be stacked (Manchester Piccadilly terminus platforms being a good example).

I thought that following an accident at Manchester Vic, the ORR were none too keen on permissive platform sharing at through stations. Which is why Leeds got mid platform signals. And various places got what was colloquially called MVAIR locking, that prevents the first train being signalled out until the second train has been brought to a stand, or a second train being signalled in if the first has already been signalled out.

Over here in France, due to massive bottleneck at some stations, SNCF has started a trial of 2TMV (2 trains sur la même voie) at select stations, apart for the confusion insuing from passengers not realizing it's the wrong train, it seems to work fine.

The goal of that is to put 2 trains, going opposite way to each other, on the same platform, to allow more paths to be used at those stations.

Would that help some of the pathing issues encountered in the UK? Where could that be more useful?
Already happens in Marylebone. I have a memory as a child of seeing 2 trains on the same platform at Marylebone.

Happens at Waverely on a regular basis. 6 cars often terminate and then split for different destination, often departing within minutes of each other.

As mentioned above there has always been interlocking against simultaneously signalling trains into both ends of a through platform. The subsidiary aspect that is used to admit a train to an occupied platform conveys the meaning that the driver must be prepared to stop short of any obstruction, but that is for a non-moving obstruction not a train approaching on the same track!

If a train is signalled out of one end of a platform, signalling a train in at the other end creates a risk of "reading through" where the driver sees the clear signal but not the train in between.

There used to be something called "back to back locking" which prevented signals for departure from both ends of a platform being cleared at the same time. I got the somewhat unlikely sounding explanation from a signalling engineer many years ago, that it was to prevent two drivers in locomotives coupled to both ends of the same train both deciding to depart.

ISTR trains doing that at each of the throiugh platforms (3,4 & 7). Indeed hals of P7 has 3rd rail for Merseyrail terminators whereas the other half doesnt as it normally takes starters for the Frodsham line.

Where top and tailing is allowed, you can signal in from both ends simultaneously, provided there is already a train in the platform as a "buffer" between the two incoming moves. I understood that it derived from coaching stock days, when you might be adding coaches to the back of a train at the same time as doing a loco swap at the front. However, I think the SR found it quite useful with EMUs sharing a platform.

I saw such an incident unfold in front of me from my office window in Reading's Western Tower during the 1980s. It was common for empty DMUs exiting the old Triangle depot to enter service via the old platform 5, the up platform loop used by the vast majority of up express services at the time. The DMUs could go straight into service on #5 for a stopper to London, cross to and reverse on the reliefs into one of the east end bays for a later departure, or get to the Southern lines for a Gatwick service. One day an HST stopped very quickly again after dispatch towards London. The empty DMU driver, following rather too close behind, couldn't stop in time, resulting in two neat round buffer holes in the nose fairing of the rear power car!

This happens daily at Ipswich and Norwich. Either one unit is locked out of use or the signage on the side of the trains indicates the destination so avoid confusion. A 720 always heads south to London and a 755 heads north to Cambridge or P'boro so passengers know by how the train looks as well. Then at Norwich EMR shares platforms with GA 755s as well. It happens at Sheffield, Bristol and many other stations and is an efficient way to operate services as it allows a single through IC service like at Temple Meads and terminating shorter regional services from opposite ends.

Glasgow Central usually shares platforms between different trains, although this is a terminus so common practice.

One thing that can get ppl confused is they announce departures as "The Rear of" or "The Front of", so when theres two departures people think the front train is the one nearest them (ie buffer end), when in actual fact thats the rear train. The front train is the one furthest away (ie the top of platform, the one that leaves first).
I don't think there is any pointwork in the station platforms to shuffle trains infront of eachother, so if one train can't leave for whatever reason, the one behind it is trapped.

I do recall at Manchester Piccadilly though there is a one direction only points from (IIRC) platform 5 to platform 6. I think it can only be used by a two or three car train though. Anyone know why it was installed there, and in one direction only?

Is/was that a throwback to the days when the loco needed to be released from the front of a rake of inter city coaches?

I'm sure Manchester Airport had two trains leaving from the same platform (albeit a terminus) as I recall being extremely confused once trying to board the right train? In fact I think the platforms are still X(a) and X(B) but the increased size might mean that's not necessary noe.

Oh, and does Kirkby count - two trains on one platform?!!

Ormskirk works, though there are buffers.

Do the trains use different platforms at Headbolt Lane? I know there is a longer term plan, but cannot remember what the state at opening is.

Two platforms for Merseyrail, one for Northern.
the Northern platform is slightly higher up than the Merseyrail ones

From personal memory in the 70s, and probably before that, the incoming locomotive would follow the departing train at Piccadilly before stopping at the signal to await a route, with both in motion at the same time. It would probably have returned to the station shortly after to take a later departure. If the other pairs of platforms had also had crossovers, the adjacent one would have had to be empty to release the locomotive at the buffer stops, and the station was just too busy to rely on that. This would be the case at most major termini. Some stations had middle tracks between two platform tracks to allow loco release when both were occupied, but this took up more space.

It was posted on here recently that only the Harwich boat train had the arriving locomotive running round via that crossover and taking the departing train out - probably because it had an Eastern Region locomotive and the next train it could return home on would most likely have been the same one next day.

I think doubling up of trains is still commonplace at Manchester Airport, probably at all four national rail platforms.

I've also seen two trains share a platform before departing in opposite directions at Preston, Nottingham and Huddersfield.
It's not always done very well at Nottingham! I've seen a train recently sitting half on 1B and half on 1C, and two services were due to depart, one each from 1B and 1C respectively, within 10 the next minutes (one of them hadn't arrived yet). The train destination indicator hadn't been set (still showing "Nottingham"), and the doors were open for boarding. One of the station staff was running about trying to make sure passengers were not boarding (or failing to board) the wrong/right service.

A little more effort positioning the trains in the correct part of the platform would be useful.

Tender has now been issued, for Manchester Airport station, appears intention is to be able to double stack 6x24m (144m trains) which suggests platforms close to 300m (985 feet) long

I am guessing making provision for two pairs of 6car 195s (do they actually have enough of these ?

Description​

The planned introduction of longer train services to the Airport in response to future demand growth will mean that double stacking arrangements of trains as currently used will no longer be viable. Through the project's Delivery Steering Group, Northern and TransPennine Express have carried out analysis which has identified that additional platform capacity is needed at the airport in order to realise the full benefit of longer train services serving the airport. The scheme is part of a package of proposed measures in the Manchester area that are being designed/planned to boost capacity and resilience, emanating from the Cross Manchester Capacity and Reliability Improvement Study. Improving the operation of train services in the centre of Manchester and providing further capacity at Manchester Airport station, aligns with the strategic aims of Network Rail, TfGM, TfN and the wider industry. This project in in Tranche 1 of the Manchester and North West Transformation Programme (MNTP): A remodelling of the station at Manchester Airport, specifically a platform addition or extension of multiple platforms, or provision of a new turnback facility, will be essential to accommodate the planned implementation of longer rolling stock services. The redevelopment of these platforms will enable permissive working of two 6x24m (144m) trains, in two of the four platforms at the Airport Station. This will allow for the unaltered retention of all existing TOC services both originating and terminating at the Airport Station under 'double-stacking' conditions.
