After the Conservatives lost a record 251 seats at last month's General Election under Rishi Sunak, who do you think will do the best to fix the Conservative Party?

I don't think Badenoch will win; in a straight race she's the front-runner perhaps, but this isn't a straight race. The process is about eliminating two people, twice, until there are two left to put to the membership, and there will be a lot of motivation by groups of MPs to ensure that certain people are eliminated - Badenoch being one of them. She seems not to have any power base in the party, and I think MPs will cast votes for people they don't ultimately see winning just to make sure that it's not her - or someone else they don't care for.

I'm not sure I really care who wins, whoever it is has an impossible job and won't achieve it, there are too many seething factions. Only when the MPs realise that unity is the only way to win an election will sense prevail.

I've gone for Cleverly simply because he's probably not unacceptable to a lot of MPs.

That’s my feeling too and she’s also not particularly good at being interviewed, she just comes across as irritable and that’s not going to work when you’re trying to get the public to warm to you.

I've no doubt at all she'll make the initial cut to two candidates. Then all she has to concern herself with is the excellent critical thinking skills displayed by the Tory membership, so perfectly displayed during the long, weird summer of 2022.

I'm going to go for Cleverly because he's somewhat right-wing but not silly right-wing. (To be clear - this is who I think will win, not who will be the best leader, which is probably Tugendhat).

The Tories still seem to want a right-wing candidate (so perhaps neither Stride nor Tugendhat will make it) but I guess with Cleverly he's not so right wing that he would completely put off the electorate.

I find him a bit smug and condescending but he's not a foaming-at-the-mouth fringe figure.

Jenrick the least likely as he seems to be the most reactionary and foaming-at-the-mouth of the lot of them.

There is a whiff of hypocrisy when Tories attack diversity policies in workplaces/society in general, but then proceed to boast about having had all the female PMs and the first non-white PM.

In the view of the membership, one of the previous female leaders did the best job of all time.

I think the MPs know a right winger will win, because the membership are well to the right and will vote for the more extreme candidate when given the choice. I think the MPs will ensure that that candidate is Jenrick, as he seems the most competent (or least incompetent) of the right wingers.

I went for Priti Patel, because she can play the "I'm loyal to Boris" card which seems to still have quite a lot of play within the Conservative grassroots. If not Patel, probably Jenrick - I can't imagine the same people who voted in Liz Truss voting in a moderate as leader just two years later.
